Daily Batter Breakdown: Fri, May 2nd

Welcome to the Daily Batter Breakdown. Each day, with at least 8 games on the night slate, I’ll breakdown some of the best top tier hitters to target based on matchup. The biggest split taken into account will be left/right, but each player card will also show park factors, player salaries and then a description of why I’ll be targeting him. Be sure to check out the FAQ for more information on specific stats.
Today looks like an interesting slate today as there are a bunch of above average pitchers going with a couple of aces and only 3 games above 8 total over/unders and some below 7 even. You are definitely going to want to target those games while avoiding the Aces. It doesn’t look like too much weather concern tonight either so we should have free reign on all of the games.

Yan Gomes

Gomes is nearly min priced on most every site and has a solid matchup tonight if he is stuck in the lineup. He has struggled a bit this year even against lefties, but if you look at his previous stats from the last couple of years he usually rakes against left handed pitching at an .864 OPS with more homers against lefties in less at bats. Danks has been definitely hittable and the Indians are favored in this game with a decently high over/under. Gomes makes a solid punt play at catcher.

Brandon Moss

Moss has been a little bit of an enigma this year, but he is still almost an automatic middle of the hitter against right handers. He has a very solid matchup in Fenway Park today in a game with one of the highest over/unders of the night. If you’re looking to stack, Moss is a must and Oakland isn’t a bad choice being away at Fenway in a game they aren’t too huge of a dog in. Moss really crushes right handed pitching and Buchholz has been anything but great this year with his 6.66 ERA and giving up at least 2 ER in every game.

Logan Forsythe

The Yankees will throw out spot starter Vidal Nuno in this game making this one one of the highest over/unders of the night even with Price pitching for the Rays. I really like Logan Forsythe who led off last night for value as Nuno has been both decent (once) and garbage (twice) in long appearances this year Forsythe is struggling naturally because he isn’t a great hitter but he’s priced to buy and if he leads off could be a great option if he can just get on base. I also like Ben Zobrist at 2nd base as well in this game however he is light years more expensive than Forsythe.

0.968 1.066 $3,400 $7,195 $9,300 $4,300 $73,800 $6,800 $9,900

Adrian Beltre

Beltre is definitely at a bargain price today for a guy who was basically the top 3rd baseman almost the entire year last year. He is facing Santiago today who has really been poor against right handers this year giving up a .754 OPS against them and all of this year’s homers. Beltre really destroyed left handers this year, and this Vegas line is really confusing to me as it’s set at 9 runs at Angels stadium even with how poor the Rangers offense has been this year. Beltre has been decent coming back from the DL and I think he gets his first homer from off the DL today.

0.907 0.897 $3,200 $7,200 $9,900 $4,000 $75,100 $7,000 $8,800

Jose Reyes

Reyes’ 0/5 really stank up the joint last night and messed a few people up almost every site. He’s priced at a bargain again tonight and I really think in the long run the 3,200 price and 4k price on FD and DK are way too low for his ability and his leadoff status. I hate the shortstop pool today as Tulo is way too expensive and there really isn’t anyone else who sticks out to me, so I may roll with Reyes anyways who has power and speed and multiple ways to get you points. I’m not enamored with the matchup against Cole, but it’s not like Cole has been a world beater this year.

Chris Young

Rockies were the stud matchup at Coors last night but tonight I think it’s going to be the Mets who do the damage. Carlos Gonzales will probably be out with his finger contusion and Wheeler is on the mound so the Rockies offense might have a down game. I will be targeting Chris Young (I think the Chris Young the pitcher salaries were imported here) as he is fairly cheap and has a nice matchup. Young was a stud at times with the DBacks and should enjoy a return to Coors Field against a left hander. The Mets are all really cheap, so stack them up against De La Rosa today and his .781 OPS against righties.

Juan Lagares

Lagares was activated yesterday and hit 2 doubles and scored a run all while being fairly cheap on all of the sites. I’m rolling with him again today as I see no reason why the Mets would have him anywhere but leadoff after last night. He’s a bargain everywhere, against a guy in De La Rosa who hasn’t been good this year and is in the highest over/under game of the night. What else could you really ask for?

jackie-bradley-100x75 Jackie Bradley

0.960 1.043 $2,700 $6,253 $7,100 $3,800 $54,900 $6,900 $7,600

Jackie Bradley

I’m as big of a fan of Straily as anyone, but he just hasn’t had that great of stuff in the last 3 games giving up 12 total earned runs. In fact, he’s really struggling against left handers giving up a .868 OPS this year. Bradley is extremely cheap, and I like his speed as he’s able to stretch out a double into a triple and also score from home on some hits that might not score others. He will be hitting at the bottom of the lineup but I think the Red Sox do damage today and recently, it’s been the bottom of their lineup doing the work. Bradley should be very lightly owned and makes a nice punt play with upside in GPPs.

0.960 1.043 $3,100 $5,239 $6,900 $3,200 $44,700 $5,100 $9,500

Grady Sizemore

Same with Sizemore as with Bradley, Sizemore is cheap and has a nice matchup today with Straily, and could actually be hitting close to the top of the lineup. Sizemore has been struggling mightily recently but has shown signs of getting it together. I like the Red Sox lefties more than most in this game and I think they can put up a nice number for their owners without a lot of cost, unless you’re using Ortiz which I would also recommend.

0.933 1.003 $3,000 $5,886 $9,250 $4,000 $66,800 $6,800 $7,600

Carlos Santana

Santana has crushed lefties in his career to the tune of a .880 OPS and even though he has really been struggling this year there are signs of him turning it around. His price at most places is still under valued for what it should be in the long run, and I like his matchup against Danks who hasn’t been great this year or at all in his career. Santana has hit homers in 2 of the last 3 games and is showing signs of breaking out of his early season slump.
