Daily Batter Breakdown: Sat, August 2nd

Welcome to the Daily Batter Breakdown. Each day, with at least 8 games on the night slate, I’ll breakdown some of the best top tier hitters to target based on matchup. The biggest split taken into account will be left/right, but each player card will also show park factors, player salaries and then a description of why I’ll be targeting him. Be sure to check out the FAQ for more information on specific stats.

Carlos Santana

So Miles Mikolas isn’t very good and the Indians are huge favorites tonight. It’s going to be hard for me to keep Carlos Santana out of my lineups tonight especially due to how hot he’s been. His price has risen a ton since crushing all of those homers, but this is still a great matchup. He’s hit 15 homers off right handed pitching this year and should be good for another or maybe more tonight.

david-ortiz-100x75 David Ortiz

PARK-1 PARK-LR FD DD DK FF SS FTD
0.970 0.000 $4,500 $5,400 $8,700 $0

David Ortiz

Greene has actually been solid this year for the Yankees and pitched some good games. He will face the revamped Red Sox lineup in Fenway tonight and Vegas isn’t liking his chances of continuing his solid start. H’e sallowed a .742 OPS to left handers while being almost unhittable against righties, so lefties against him are the way to go. Ortiz doesn’t really care who is on the hill, as he will homer against anyone. A lot of the top 1st basemen are all facing the same hand today so if you are looking for the R/L splits, go Ortiz as he has crushed right handers in his career.

1.092 0.000 $3,400 $4,200 $57,200 $6,400 $8,150 $0

Josh Rutledge

I really hate the 2nd base pool today, but that’s nothing different than most every day. Rutledge is #1 on the wOBA charts at the 2b position and is taking advantage of starting every day now. Porcello has allowed righties to do more damage than lefties this year. Once again, it’s not a great matchup but if you can get it at a bargain, I would go with it.

nick-castellanos-100x75 Nick Castellanos
Daily Breakdown Avg OPS HR% wOBA

1.092 0.000 $2,900 $3,500 $66,400 $5,400 $6,750 $0

Nick Castellanos

I really like the Tigers against Matzek today. I still think he’s pitching just a bit above his ability so I am seeing a poor start and this could definitely be it. The Tigers’ lineup is riddled with right handed batters and while Matzek has been almost unhittable against lefties he’s allowed righties to hit a .795 OPS and all 3 HR off of him. The Tigers are heavily favored today and Castellanos is cheap at 3rd.

jose-reyes-100x75 Jose Reyes
Daily Breakdown Avg OPS HR% wOBA

PARK-1 PARK-LR FD DD DK FF SS FTD
0.982 0.000 $4,000 $4,900 $85,100 $8,100 $9,650 $0

Jose Reyes

The Blue Jays are favored today at the Astros and with Brett Oberholtzer on the hill I can see why. Vegas has never liked Oberholtzer throughout this whole year, and for good reason. Reyes will lead off for the Jays against a pitcher who has allowed almost a .800 OPS to right handed batters this year. The only concern is that Reyes is generally better against right handed starters, but I’ll still take him in this situation.

adam-jones-100x75 Adam Jones

Paxton – LEFT
PARK-1 PARK-LR FD DD DK FF SS FTD
0.843 0.000 $4,500 $4,800 $90,100 $8,900 $10,450 $0

Adam Jones

I love Adam Jones today against Paxton who is returning to the Mariners rotation tonight. He’s decent but in his few starts this year and last he’s allowed 4 homers to right handers. Adam Jones is hitting .383 with a 1.133 OPS against lefties this year and has hit 7 HR in 107 at bats. He’s got a great matchup today as this game has a fairly high over/under in a hitter friendly park in Camden Yards.

rajai-davis-100x75 Rajai Davis
Daily Breakdown Avg OPS HR% wOBA
Left/Right Splits 0.373 0.982 2.94% 0.425
Last 7 Days Splits 0.231 0.462 0.00% 0.206

PARK-1 PARK-LR FD DD DK FF SS FTD
1.092 0.000 $3,000 $4,300 $61,200 $6,900 $7,700 $0

Rajai Davis

Davis is going to relish leading off for the Tigers and with the emergence of J.D. Martinez and how well Davis has played, it made Jackson expendable. Davis has absolutely destroyed lefties this year with a .973 OPS and a .371 average and while he doesn’t steal often against them, he makes up for it with his great average.

brett-gardner-100x75 Brett Gardner
Daily Breakdown Avg OPS HR% wOBA
Left/Right Splits 0.291 0.692 0.85% 0.316
Last 7 Days Splits 0.346 1.277 15.38% 0.54

Webster – RIGHT
PARK-1 PARK-LR FD DD DK FF SS FTD
0.970 0.000 $4,200 $5,300 $9,100 $0

Brett Gardner

I’m loving the Yankees lefties again today just like usual, and despite Gardner’s bad game against Boston last night, he’s still one of the hottest hitters on the planet right now. Webster is a solid prospect and his horrible mark against lefties last year is not his true numbers, but it’s still alarming. He allowed a .391 average with a 1.253 OPS and 7 HR. It’s only 64 at bats but that’s pretty horrible and the Yankees lefties are in a very good spot tonight especially in Fenway.

daniel-santana-100x75 Daniel Santana
Daily Breakdown Avg OPS HR% wOBA

PARK-1 PARK-LR FD DD DK FF SS FTD
0.966 0.000 $3,400 $48,700 $0

Danny Santana

Santana has been solid for the Twins this year and is still sitting at a really nice bargain. I like his matchup against Scott Carroll as Carroll has been one of the pitchers to pick on this year. Carroll’s numbers don’t matchup up and he should be allowing a bit more runs than he is. The good thing about Santana is that he’s dual eligible on a few sites offering roster flexibility with a cheap price. He’s got some power as well so you aren’t just punting that position as well.

josh-donaldson-100x75 Josh Donaldson
Daily Breakdown Avg OPS HR% wOBA
Left/Right Splits 0.281 1.098 11.46% 0.461
Last 7 Days Splits 0.318 1.105 9.09% 0.471
Opp SP vs. LR Avg OPS HR% wOBA
Vargas – LEFT 0.249 0.705 1.59% 0.311
PARK-1 PARK-LR FD DD DK FF SS FTD
0.997 0.000 $4,400 $5,000 $9,300 $0

Josh Donaldson

Without Cespedes in the lineup, Donaldson becomes the go-to hitter in this lineup. He’s got a nice hit streak going and has absolutely destroyed left handed pitching this year and every year. His 1.097 OPS with 11 HR in 96 at bats is absurd and even though Vargas has some reverse splits this year, Vargas is homer prone at times and is just coming back from surgery which could effect his delivery.
