Daily Batter Breakdown: Sat, May 10th
Welcome to the Daily Batter Breakdown. Each day, with at least 8 games on the night slate, I’ll breakdown some of the best top tier hitters to target based on matchup. The biggest split taken into account will be left/right, but each player card will also show park factors, player salaries and then a description of why I’ll be targeting him. Be sure to check out the FAQ for more information on specific stats.
Today’s theme is going to be BVP for all you haters out there. No, not all picks will be off BVP but there are some interesting hot BVP numbers that the intrinsic matchup favors as well. It’s one of those nights where I think we actually have some numbers that have a bit of meaning. Each player isn’t from a specific set of games but from the all day games, so make sure you take that into account.

Yan Gomes
We get a lefty on the hill today in Erik Bedard for the Rays so Yan Gomes should get the start at catcher for the Indians. Even though he has been good in the last 2 games, he still doesn’t inspire much confidence in me to pitch consistently. He’s been awful at home this season giving up a north of 9 ERA and a .314 average and Gomes smashes lefties to an .864 OPS in the last 2 years.

Ryan Howard
The first BVP monster of the day goes to Ryan Howard vs Dillon Gee. In their careers, Howard only has 15 at bats but has 6 homers and 7 hits in those at bats for a 2.166 OPS. He makes a great GPP play as I am looking for him to homer tonight. Howard smashes right handed pitching and although Gee has been good so far, he really struggles against lefties making Howard a great play.
| Dustin Pedroia | |||||||

Dustin Pedroia
Pedroia is a player that should always get a long look against LHPs. Last year he had an astounding triple slash line of .354/.432/.505 against southpaws and this year he is off to a great start with a .340wOBA in 42 at bats. Perez isn’t great against right handed batters and he has been meager in his last couple outings, granted one was at Coors. Perez’ stuff is going to look like slow pitch today for the Red Sox after what Darvish was dealing last night and I fully expect the Sox to score some runs in this one; it will help that Pedroia has been leading off as well.

Alexei Ramirez
Alexei is having quite a season for the White Sox this year, but for some reason Ventura refuses to slide him up in the lineup. He hasn’t been good against lefties this year but his previous years he was a bit better against them than he was against righties. Miley hasn’t been good this year and consistently gives up multiple runs along with having a really poor WHIP on the season. Miley’s been worse against lefties than righties but I still like the hot hitting Ramirez at short today.
| Carlos Beltran | |||||||

Carlos Beltran
BVP! There is actually a large sample here and although Beltran vs Lohse goes a long way back, 51 at bats with 25 hits a 1.415 OPS and only 5 strikeouts means a lot to me. Beltran gets to hit in Miller Park again and he’s one of my favorite plays of the night as he’s still got that homer power and isn’t that expensive across the industry.

Aramis Ramirez
A-Ram is traditionally a beast against lefties. Over the last three seasons he has a stellar 50 extra base hits in 344 at bats and with C.C. Sabathia no longer having much, if any, mustard on his fastball Ramirez is a great option today, particularly on FanDuel and StarStreet. Ramirez also has a nice BVP with 10 for 19 off Sabathia and Sabathia has allowed 6 HR to lefties this year and is sporting a. .898 OPS against them. He’s definitely not the same pitcher of old and the Brewer’s righties should go nuts tonight.

Austin Jackson
Boy did the Tigers hitting let me down yesterday, but I still like them today. I’ve been really anti-Kyle Gibson this year and it seems that he’s either got the stuff or he doesn’t. It makes a Tiger’s stack a little risky but if you are straying from them because of all of the right handers, I wouldn’t worry about that. Miggy hits righties very well obviously and Jackson has actually been better in his career against right handers than left handers. The Tigers have guys who do damage to right handed pitching and I really like Jackson who I think will be batting 5th.

Mike Trout
It worked last night, and it can only get better tonight. I expected the Angels to score a bit more, but a Trout homer did enough. Today, the Angels are in Rogers Centre against JA Happ who has been one of the guys that I have picked on for a while. I do not think Happ is very good as he’s sporting a 1.61 WHIP this season and has put up some pretty poor numbers in his career. Trout is basically the best hitter in baseball and is priced like it but he’s hardly ever going to disappoint.

Brandon Moss
What are we going to get from Tanner Roark? I’m really not sure but I think with all of the swingin’ A’s, that we might get something closer to the 4ip 7er effort than the 9ip 0er effort. Moss absolutely rakes against right handed pitching and Roark has allowed all 4 homers and an .876 OPS to lefties this year. Moss will go for a homer in the 2nd straight day.

Jose Abreu
If you want as close as you can get for a lock for a homer, Abreu has to be it right now. He’s not really picky as he’s homering once every 8 at bats against lefties and once every 12 at bats against righties. Abreu is the real deal, however his salary is the real deal as well and you will have to find some bargain pitchers to go with him. I’m not a fan of Miley, he doesn’t have good numbers and he’s pitching at US Cellular where the White Sox hit much better.
