Daily Batter Breakdown: Saturday, May 30th

Welcome to the Daily Batter Breakdown. Whenever there are at least eight games on the night slate, I’ll break down some of the best top tier hitters to target based on matchup.

The biggest split taken into account will be left/right, but each player card will also show park factors, player salaries and then a description of why I’ll be targeting him.

Stephen Vogt

With Carlos Santana on paternity leave, the catcher options get a little bit shorter today as he would have been a fantastic option against Elias but alas – he will not be in the lineup. Vogt better be in the lineup against Eovaldi, who has been terrible against lefties this season. Vogt went through a period of regression, but has been hitting a lot better in the last few games and always has that homer power that we all desire.

1.052 0.000 $2,700 $7,100 $3,600 $58,500

Robinson Chirinos

Is Chirinos the best hitting Robinson in the majors right now? I would say so, as he is destroying Cano’s numbers and is much more valuable in fantasy than Cano at the moment. A .451 wOBA, .345 ISO, and 1.067 OPS makes him almost a daily plug and play option when he faces a lefty, especially at home in hitter-friendly Globe Life. It also helps that he is against Wade Miley, who has decent numbers right now, but his BABIP and xFIP are expecting a regression at .280 and 4.93 respectively. I am not a huge fan of Miley and I think Chirinos is the low-owned way to go at catcher.

1.052 0.000 $2,600 $8,000 $4,800 $70,200

David Ortiz

Uh oh. The Rangers are sending out Chi Chi Gonzalez tonight, who has never pitched an inning in the majors, and is coming into a hitter’s park right away. He is going to have to face Ortiz who makes dinners out of new pitchers, especially bad righties. Gonzalez’s numbers are not great in AAA as he has allowed a 4.42 xFIP there this year and is not a guy with great stuff. We all know how much Ortiz mashes righties and bad righties, and this could get ugly early. Ortiz has been benched for struggling lately and to get his mechanics right, but this is the absolute best time to send him back out there and boost that confidence.

Article Image Ben Zobrist

PARK-1 PARK-LR FD DD DK FF SS FTD
1.023 0.000 $3,100 $7,550 $4,000 $63,500

Ben Zobrist

Zobrist has disappointed lately against right-handed pitchers, especially in the last couple years, but I still like him in this situation against Eovaldi. There are not many second basemen I like today, but Zobrist always has the mix of power, speed and on-base percentage that makes him a solid play in cash games. Eovaldi has been decent this year, but his numbers against lefties are dreadful sporting a .424 wOBA in 19 innings. I really like Burns and Vogt as well today from the Athletics, but Zobrist should be good as well.

Article Image Pablo Sandoval
Daily Breakdown Avg OPS HR% wOBA

Gonzalez – Right
PARK-1 PARK-LR FD DD DK FF SS FTD
1.052 0.000 $2,500 $6,650 $4,300 $47,300

Pablo Sandoval

Sandoval has been putrid batting as a righty this year, but no worries. He will be hitting lefty against Chi Chi tonight, who I described above, is not coming into a great situation. Vegas has the Red Sox as the highest projected scoring team of the night and for good reason. Pablo makes a great stack with Ortiz with his .387 wOBA against righties, and his .882 OPS as well. Oh, and did I mention he is only $2,500 on FanDuel tonight? That price just cannot be beaten for how solid the matchup is.

PARK-1 PARK-LR FD DD DK FF SS FTD
1.052 0.000 $2,600 $7,100 $3,900 $51,700

Elvis Andrus

Traditionally, I have never looked at Andrus as a L/R split guy who has solid splits against lefties, but they have been getting better. His .359 wOBA and .119 ISO are the best of his career and he his having a solid hitting season against lefties so far. I talked above about how I am targeting Miley with the Rangers’ righties, and Andrus and Chirinos will certainly be a part of that plan. This entire game should be great for the bats, and I think the Rangers are going to need some runs to keep up with the Red Sox.

Article Image Brock Holt
Daily Breakdown Avg OPS HR% wOBA
Left/Right Splits 0.279 0.703 1.16% 0.314
Last 7 Days Splits 0.400 1.126 0.00% 0.487

Gonzalez – Right
PARK-1 PARK-LR FD DD DK FF SS FTD
1.052 0.000 $2,600 $5,600 $3,600 $54,700

Brock Holt

Red Sox stacks are going to be extremely popular on FanDuel today and even DraftKings. FanDuel has some ridiculous prices and Brock Holt’s price is too low. Holt has been good this year – a .353 wOBA is nothing to break down walls over, but a .118 ISO with speed and stolen base ability is more than can be asked for for his price on either site. Chi Chi is going to be the guy to stack against today, making the Red Sox great cash game plays and just above average GPP plays due to their high ownership.

Article Image Nori Aoki
Daily Breakdown Avg OPS HR% wOBA

Perez – Right 0.360 0.000 0.405
PARK-1 PARK-LR FD DD DK FF SS FTD
0.920 0.000 $8,450 $4,100

Nori Aoki

Aoki burned me in the last game, not getting a single hit, but he is in almost the same situation tonight and I am not going to be straying from him. His price increased enough to scare some people off of him, which is even better. Aoki has a nice .366 wOBA, a solid average, and has been hot at the plate against righties lately and gets to face Williams Perez who has allowed lefties to hit at a .405 wOBA in his very, very small sample at the major league level.

Article Image Anthony Gose
Daily Breakdown Avg OPS HR% wOBA
Left/Right Splits 0.274 0.722 1.07% 0.324

PARK-1 PARK-LR FD DD DK FF SS FTD
0.919 0.000 $3,000 $7,250 $3,500 $55,500

Anthony Gose

Gose is having a very nice season so far, outperforming his previous seasons by a decent margin. We are getting to the point (120 AB) where we can start to drop the small sample size tag, and we can roll with his numbers, which currently sit at .378 wOBA .871 OPS and .140 ISO. He will be hitting at the top of the lineup against Jered Weaver, and is going to have some great hitters behind him if he is able to get on base. He is also a stolen base threat against righties and Weaver has been getting progressively worse against lefties allowing his wOBA allowed to sail north of .320 and his xFIP to get north of 4.20.

PARK-1 PARK-LR FD DD DK FF SS FTD
0.825 0.000 $3,600 $9,200 $4,100 $78,300

Kyle Seager

Seager has cooled after his monster game against Tampa, but he still brings a .350 wOBA and a .181 ISO against right handed pitching. He has been having a little bit of a disappointing season, but he definitely rakes against righties and is facing a guy in Marcum today who has given up 5 homers in 14 innings pitched and could not even get out of the second inning in his last game. In addition, Marcum has been horrible against lefties lately and even disregarding his short sample this year of a .483 wOBA against, he had a 4.5 and 4.85 xFIP in 2012 and 2013 against southpaw hitters.
