Daily Fantasy, Daily Life: Volume XIII - USFL DFS is a Go!

A little bit of breaking news for ya on this fine spring day: DraftKings will indeed be offering daily fantasy USFL contests, per a spokesperson for the company.

This ends days, weeks, months of “will they or won’t they” speculation.

And let me tell you: This was a touch-and-go situation, as at first, the spokesperson told me it was “doubtful,” at 10:35 a.m. before we got the full go at 11:40 a.m.

“I stand corrected,” said the spokesperson. “We will be offering USFL for DFS.”

And with that, the doves have been released, there is joy in Mudville, and every little thing is clearly and obviously magic.

As for FanDuel? The decision has not been made yet, according to their spokesperson, but here’s hoping some USFL FOMO will force FanDuel’s hand.

Of course, if you’re still reading this, you’re like me and … lost money playing F1 DFS this week. Yep. I don’t know my F1 from G2, but that didn’t prevent me from reading up on it right here on RotoGrinders, doing a “F1 DFS” Twitter search, and generally trying to become an expert on something I know nothing about in a matter of days all to get myself a little Sunday morning sweat.

And you better believe I’ll be doing the same with the USFL, just like I did for the XFL and … were there AAF DFS contests? I honestly don’t remember, but if there was, I played them. Do you dabble in CFL DFS? I do (and if you’re still reading, we all should probably join a support group).

But yeah: I am very excited to know that for 10 weeks in the spring starting April 16 — and yowza, that’s a mere 25 days from now, be still my beating heart — I will be putting together USFL lineups.

I will be using LineupHQ right here on RotoGrinders to help me. I will be Twitter searching “USFL DFS.”

I will be getting very familiar with players I have literally never heard of before, and there is a not-zero chance if I manage to take down a tournament, I will end up buying merchandise featuring such football luminaries as Osirus Mitchell of the Birmingham Stallions, or maybe Isiah Zuber of the Houston Gamblers, or perhaps even Kamala Cumberdunch of the Nashville Strummers.

By the way, the fact one of those names (and one of those teams) doesn’t even exist doesn’t even matter: It’s DFS football — clearly both the devil’s and God’s preferred form of daily fantasy sports — and I will know who the backup running backs are for the Seattle Rainmakers (not a real team) by week two at the latest.

It’s what I do. It’s who I am. You can’t stop me (I’m talking directly to my wife at this point, who will be none too pleased to know the USFL weekend kicks off Friday nights half the time).

Every game will be televised, for the record, either on FOX, NBC, USA, or FS1. (Note to self: FS1 = television network, F1 = racey cars vroom vroom).

I cashed one tourney lineup out of eight, for the record. One and done for me in the F1 world.

But the USFL? I actually know the rules of football, and have been playing fantasy football since 1986 and any and every chance I get to play DFS football I’m going to take.

And so are you, obviously.

First game is the New Jersey Generals against the Birmingham Stallions at 7:30 p.m. on April 16. I expect a Showdown and full slate, DraftKings.
