RECAP: 2021 DraftKings Fantasy Football World Championship

The DraftKings Fantasy Football World Championship is in the books!

200 qualifiers headed to Miami to battle it out for $12.5M in prizes. The slate was vastly different once we made it to Sunday with COVID issues shaking up the schedule, but we still ended up with an exciting live final.

VASSA TAKES IT DOWN

Huge congrats to vassa for grabbing the $2.5M top prize (plus a Tournament of Champions ticket).

Check out the winning lineup below!

The Green Bay stack with the Mark Andrews bring back was somewhat popular, but vassa differentiated by including Aaron Jones with Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams. Jones’ TD catch in the 3rd quarter carried vassa to the takedown.

Jones wasn’t the only low-owned play, as vassa also got different with Michael Gallup (3.5%) and Laquon Treadwell (3%). Gallup snowflaked, but Treadwell put up a solid six catches for 57 yards.

TIGHTLY PACKED TOP 5

1. vassa – 169.12

2. 180DegreesMiami – 165.72

3. mikemc – 164.62

4. zsmiley – 164.20

5. wakeywakey – 163.14

Less than 3 points separated 2nd – 5th place, with 180DegreesMiami holding off mikemc to secure 2nd place and $1M (plus a Tournament of Champions ticket).

A sequence in the 4th quarter of Packers vs. Ravens decided the outcome, as both 180DegreesMiami and mikemc had Green Bay stacks but the former had Marquez Valdes-Scantling and the latter had Allen Lazard. On 1st and 10 from the 11 yard line, Rodgers overthrew an open Lazard in the corner of the end zone. On 2nd down, Rodgers hit MVS across the middle for an 11-yard TD. This would be the difference for 180DegreesMiami.

zsmiley came out of nowhere to grab 4th place, as a pair of Tyler Huntley rushing TDs in the 4th quarter vaulted them up the leaderboard. They could’ve jumped to 2nd place if Baltimore’s 2pt conversion near the end of regulation hadn’t failed.

Hard not to feel for wakeywakey, who scored as many points as Jerry Jeudy. They hit on low-owned Devin Singletary and the Tua TagovailoaDeVante Parker stack came through late, but the Jeudy goose egg left wakeywakey in 5th place.

Even worse, Jeudy had a 9-yard reception on Denver’s final drive erased by a defensive penalty. The catch would’ve moved wakeywakey up to 3rd place ($750K instead of $400K).

HOW ABOUT OUR RG GUYS?

We had two RG fellas representing, as Erik Beimfohr and Cal Spears both qualified for the event.

Cal had three entries, finishing 19th, 32nd and 107th. The 19th place team was massive Green Bay/Baltimore game stack that included Rodgers/Adams/Jones/Lazard plus Andrews and Rashod Bateman. Unfortunately Bateman couldn’t keep up his connection with Huntley, managing just a single 5-yard reception.

In his other two entries, Cal paired Kyler Murray with Christian Kirk / Zach Ertz (32nd place team) and Chase Edmonds (107th place team). Murray shockingly struggled against Detroit, but Kirk and Ertz came through with solid games.

Cal’s lowest-owned play was Detroit tight end Shane Zylstra at 1%. Zylstra was elevated from the practice squad with T.J. Hockenson undergoing season-ending surgery. He caught his lone target for 16 yards. Not a bad dice roll at $2.5K, but Zylstra didn’t pan out.

Erik went with an Arizona stack as well, but Kyler + Edmonds + AJ Green couldn’t crack 30 points. He nailed Amon-Ra St. Brown as the bring back, as ARSB put up an 8/90/1 line. Erik finished in 104th place.

Big congrats to Cal and Erik for qualifying for the event and taking home some big prizes ($150K for Cal, $25K for Erik).
