Tonight, the Atlanta Hawks and Portland Trail Blazers will meet at the Moda Center to begin a new week of basketball. Entering play, Atlanta (25-25) owns the eighth-best record in the Eastern Conference. Portland (23-26) trails the Utah Jazz by 1.5 games for the final play-in position in the Western Conference. Oddsmakers are expecting a competitive contest between these two teams on Monday, pricing the Trail Blazers as 2-point home favorites on the spread.
Atlanta Hawks
Hawks learning how to fly
Since January 13, Atlanta is 6-3 and has outscored their opponents by 3.4 points per 100 possessions. Far from a coincidence, Clint Capela returned to the floor shortly after the Hawks’ recent run of success started, which has been a major boon to the team. In 34 games played with Capela in uniform this year, Atlanta is 19-15, compared to 6-10 without him.
Per Cleaning the Glass, the Hawks rank in the 62nd percentile in offensive efficiency and the 43rd percentile in defensive efficiency with Capela on the floor this year. When he is on the sidelines, they rank in the 32nd percentile in offensive efficiency and the 47th percentile in defensive efficiency.
Young listed as questionable
Per Kevin Chouinard, Trae Young is listed as questionable for tonight’s contest due to right ankle soreness. Young leads the Hawks with 27.2 points and 9.9 assists per game this season, and would represent a sizable loss if he is unable to suit-up this evening.
Atlanta ranks in the 79th percentile in offensive efficiency and the 36th percentile in defensive efficiency when Young is on the court this season, compared to the third percentile in offensive efficiency and the 66th percentile in defensive efficiency when he is on the sidelines.
Portland Trail Blazers
Struggles out west
Since January 4, the Trail Blazers rank 22nd in the NBA in Net Rating and have only four wins in their last 13 trips to the hardwood. In that stretch, they have struggled mightily to slow down their opponents, allowing 119.1 points per 100 possessions.
Portland has been particularly poor defending the perimeter and trying to defend around the rim without fouling. Across their last 17 games, they rank 20th in opponent three-point percentage and 25th in opponent free-throw attempts per game.
Lillard not enough to stop losing
In 11 games played since January 8, Damian Lillard is leading the league in scoring, averaging 37.3 points per game on an efficient 52.7% shooting from the floor. Still, the Trail Blazers are only 4-7 in those contests. On January 12, Lillard scored 50 points in a losing effort against the Cavaliers. He scored 44 points less than a week later in a loss to the Nuggets.
Bettors have no reason to trust the Trail Blazers as a team, but there is certainly value on Lillard in the player prop market, with him continuing to be undervalued relative to his recent performances.

Hawks vs. Trail Blazers – Picks & Predictions
Frankly, there is not a lot of value on the side or the total in this contest – especially without knowing definitively whether or not Trae Young will be on the floor tonight. Both of these teams have major defensive deficiencies that make them unreliable options for bettors on a nightly basis.
If there is one notable advantage that bettors can target in this spot, it is the travel schedule. On Monday, the Hawks will be playing their fourth game in four different cities in the last eight days. After traveling to play on the road in Oklahoma City last Wednesday, Atlanta had to travel back to Atlanta to play the Clippers, only to fly all the way across the country to Portland for tonight’s action. On the other side of this matchup, the Trail Blazers will be playing their sixth consecutive game in their home building.
Do not bet the house on this game, but Portland is the smart investment if choosing to place a wager here.
