This evening, the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers will meet on Sunday Night Football. Kickoff is set for 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.
Ahead of kickoff, oddsmakers have priced the Jets as 2.5-point favorites on the spread. The total is set at 40 points.
Let’s take a deeper look at the matchup to see where NFL bettors can find value at sportsbooks in this contest.
Earlier this week, star wide receiver Davante Adams was traded to the Jets to help bolster their receiving room. He is expected to be active this evening, playing with Aaron Rodgers for the first time since he was traded away from Green Bay following the 2021 season.
The Steelers enter play fresh off of a 32-13 victory over the Raiders in Week 6. However, it might not be the momentum boost it seems on the surface. According to Evan Abrams of The Action Network, NFL teams are 11-22-1 ATS in their subsequent game after playing the Raiders in Las Vegas.
New York Jets Preview
Adams reunited with Rodgers
Davante Adams is 31 years old, but it would be difficult to know that just by watching him play. In 3 games this season for the Raiders, Adams had 18 receptions, 27 targets, and 209 receiving yards, including a 9-catch, 110-yard performance against the Ravens in Week 2. His 6’1’’, 215-pound frame should complement the smaller Garrett Wilson well in the team’s passing attack, with Adams providing a much-needed big target in the red zone.
Adams will be playing for the first time since Week 3 after missing the last few weeks with a hamstring injury, but there have been no reported workload restrictions for him in his New York debut.
Reed listed as QUESTIONABLE, Carter ruled OUT
Star CB D.J. Reed is officially listed as questionable for Sunday Night Football. Reed exited last week’s game against the Bills early due to a groin injury and didn’t practice at all this week, making it seem more likely than not that he’s inactive this evening. Michael Carter is the Jets’ starting slot cornerback, but hasn’t played since exiting the team’s Week 5 contest early with a back injury. The absence of Reed and Carter was a significant issue in their most recent game against the Bills, allowing Josh Allen to complete 19 of 25 pass attempts, including a pair of touchdowns.
Pittsburgh Steelers Preview
Wilson making Pittsburgh debut
Following a 4-2 start to the new campaign, head coach Mike Tomlin surprised many people earlier this week, naming Russell Wilson as the team’s starting quarterback for this Week 7 tilt. Wilson entered the season as Pittsburgh’s QB1 but suffered an injury prior to the team’s season opener, opening the door for Justin Fields to start each of the team’s last 6 contests.
Fields performed admirably to begin the year, ranking 16th in EPA/play and 19th in success rate among 32 qualified starting quarterbacks during the first 6 weeks of the season. Last year with the Broncos, Wilson finished the year ranked 22nd in EPA/play and 22nd in success rate among quarterbacks with 100+ plays.
Can Steelers defense sustain strong start to the season?
Through 6 games, the Steelers’ defense ranks 10th in DVOA, 5th in EPA/play, and 12th in success rate. Following another 3 takeaways in Week 6, Pittsburgh entered Week 7 with the 5th-most takeaways of any team in the NFL this fall.
Looking to sustain their hot start, this group will get a big boost this evening, with the return of EDGE Alex Highsmith returning to the field for the first time since Week 3. Highsmith has been one of the league’s best pass rushers in recent seasons, finishing with 14.5 sacks in 2022 and 7 sacks in 2023.
Jets vs. Steelers Prediction
This season has obviously not gone according to plan for the Jets, winning only 2 of their first 6 games. That being said, there is reason for optimism for a variety of reasons. The arrival of WR Davante Adams should help this offense execute more consistently in key situations, even if Adams is on some type of workload restriction this evening.
New York is also catching Pittsburgh at a good time. The Steelers lost their starting center, Zach Frazier, earlier this week to an injury suffered in practice. Frazier has been one of the league’s best centers so far in 2024, ranking 6th out of 35 players at his position in run block grade, per PFF. Backup Ryan McCollum is a notable downgrade and will be playing alongside two other backups on Pittsburgh’s offensive line tonight.
It’s now or never for Aaron Rodgers and company. This is a very winnable game for the road favorites.
PICK: Jets -2.5 (-120, DraftKings)
