TODAY’S PITCHING OPTIONS WORTH CONSIDERING

NOTE: The deeper we get into these rankings, the less firm the order is, and the more tier-related it is. After all, it’s not particularly easy (or necessary, or productive!) to say, “This guy is ranked 6th, and this guy is ranked 9th,” when I like them similar amounts, and in similar ways! I’ll let you know when we are working on a new tier, and you can feel free to move guys around in each tier from there!

Felix Hernandez v Twins – King Felix is miles above any other pitching options today, in my mind. Not only is his expected K% around 27% (Danny Salazar is the only other pitcher on today’s slate in that stratospheric range), but he’s also facing the team with A) the 5th-highest K% vs righties so far this year, and B) the 3rd-worst wOBA vs righties. I’ve been saying for a while that the Twins are not as bad as their recent performance would indicate…but until anything happens to make us think they’ve turned things around, we need to rely on their numbers instead of their talent (to clarify: they’re still not a good lineup; I just don’t think they are truly this bad…except for the fact that, currently, they are!). Felix also has an expected SIERA of around 2.50 (by “expected SIERA,” I mean where I expect his SIERA to settle in this year – based on ZIPS projections, Steamer projections, his SIERA last year, and his SIERA so far this year; same goes for “expected K%” above). No other pitcher today has an expected SIERA under 3.10. As the best pitcher, with the best matchup, Felix is the no-doubt #1 option. Even if he comes out without his best stuff today, you can still comfortably expect him to have a solid game. And if he has his best stuff today (which he usually does), he could be in line for a massive game.
