KC's Weekend Review: October 16th
You know how your mother used to tell you ‘if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all?’ Well that is a tough concept to apply after the DFS weekend I just endured. But I’m going to do my best to put a positive spin on things despite the negative outcomes of almost all my games this weekend. I hope you all can ‘feel my pain.’

Actual News:
So the first set of BCS standing were released on Sunday Evening. No anger here for me, as I thought the rankings were quite interesting. One through five are as follows: Alabama, Florida, Oregon, Kansas State and the almighty Notre Dame. Here are my thoughts:
I think Alabama was an obvious no-brainer for the #1 spot seeing as they’ve absolutely laid a beating on every team they’ve played to this point. They actually play a fairly easy schedule the rest of the way, with the only real test coming at LSU in early November. It’s amazing to me how dominant Saban’s Tide have been this year without any big name guys. I’m sure when the time comes at least 5 of these guys will be first-rounders but as far as national pub on the collegiate level, his men are flying under the radar to this point in 2012.
Florida was a bit of a surprise at #2, but I must admit that young QB Jeff Driskel and company have impressed thoroughly to this point. True tests come for the Gators in their next 2 contests as they face South Carolina and Georgia before the end of October. Luckily they draw both tough opponents at home and if they can get through these 2 contests I guess Cam’s team has a legit shot at what Tebow would call a ‘Blessed Season.’
Oregon came into the year a strong favorite in what was thought to be a mediocre Pac-12. We all know they’ve got two of the biggest weapons in College Football in Kenjon Barner and DeAnthony ‘Black Mamba’ Thomas. What we don’t know is how they matchup with big-time competition. Of the six contests left for Oregon, three are against USC, Stanford and Oregon St., teams that are all currently ranked inside the top 20. They will get tested and I look forward to seeing if they can emerge unscathed.
Kansas State has played JUST well enough to remain undefeated to this point. Close road wins against Oklahoma and Iowa State have them atop the Big 12. But the road does not get any easier for Collin Klein and company as they travel to West Virginia next week to face Geno Smith and a Mountaineers team that will undoubtedly be angry after the beat down they suffered last week. This will be one of the most intriguing matchups as the year as the Wildcats love to pound the ball on the ground and well we all know about the Mountaineers vaunted air attack. I’m excited to see what this team has moving forward.
Any my most joyous moment of what was an otherwise disappointing weekend…. My Irish of Notre Dame played their way into a top 5 ranking for the first time since the controversial Bush Push of 2005. And the way they did it was incredible for those who didn’t see. Back-to-Back stops on the 1-yard-line in OT. That’s magical stuff right there. They’ve obviously gotten to this point with their defensive prowess. Let by Mant’I Teo the Golden Domers have not allowed an offensive TD in over a month (Sept. 3rd vs. Purdue). I’m not sure how long this can last as the QB situation is murky and they have tough tests remaining in USC and Oklahoma, but 2012 sure has been a fun ride for the Irish to this point.
I’m not going to analyze the BCS Standings like this on every week’s review, but seeing as this was the first release of 2012 I thought it would be a good time to do so. Couple this with the fact that my weekend was terrible in terms of DFS, and this was about the most tame I could think of to write. Please feel free to read more below on how aggravating my weekend was.
College Football DFS News:
For those of you that read the preview on Thursday Evening, you got the best of what I had. I’m fairly sure that lineup put up upwards up 250 points on Draftstreet, which should have at least been good enough for you to win the majority of H2Hs and be in the top half of 50/50s. So for that your welcome. Problem is…. I like to tweak lineups on Saturday morning. So most of my teams did not feature the guys that I gave you guys. Sounds stupid right? Yeah, Yeah I know but all I can do now is complain. Here are the (3) guys that hurt the worst:
GUYS THAT HURT – -
- Joseph Randle – RB – (Okla St.) – This was the one guy I actually gave you that underperformed. And by underperformed I mean laid an egg. On most sites he was a top-five priced running back. And on most sites he was NOT even a top-25 producing running back. I don’t care if you have to sit through a rain delay. When you are playing Kansas you have to score a touchdown. Period. There are no excuses here. John Hubert, a far less talented back from the Kansas St. Wildcats, had 4 scores vs. the Jayhawks defense two weeks ago. And Randle can’t even crack 100 yards or score. Downright freakin’ pathetic. Your terrible.
- Matt Barkley – QB – (USC) – Barkley is quickly emerging as the Darren McFadden of my college football teams. Every week there is something, be it matchup, price, his stunning good looks, etc…, the suckers me into putting him on some rosters. And every week he looks as if he has little interest in being at the game, much less playing like the Heisman Trophy Candidate he was thought to be coming into the season. He is the next Matt Leinert. You heard it hear first.
- John White – RB – (Utah) – This guy was completely off my radar until a little Saturday morning conversation I had with an RG staffer that will remain nameless. I’m in no way placing blame, but after his name was dropped I looked around the sites and saw his pricetag wasn’t nearly what it should have been for a back of his caliber. Or maybe it was exactly where it should have been, as White put up another clunker of an effort. I made a rule a long time ago to never trust a man that is a JR., III, or IV. I broke that rule with white (who is a ‘IV’ for those wondering) and I paid the price with a huge hit to the bankroll.
Hopefully I can bounce back next week in CFB. I’m imagining this will be the case, as I really don’t have anywhere to go put up after last week’s pitiful performance. I hope you all did much better than I did.
NFL News
Actual News:
NFL wasn’t much prettier from a DFS perspective, but we’ll get to that shortly. Here are a few important facts that I feel you should take away
- Only (2), count that TWO AFC teams currently have winning records. Compare that 7 NFC teams over .500, and that doesn’t include Green Bay, Philadelphia, Washington, and St. Louis all of whom are currently 3-3. NFC is definitely dominant to this point.
- The demise of the Packers was much exaggerated. They went into Houston and laid a beat down on the Texans without their best receiver. Watch out for these boys moving forward
- Brady and the Patriots lost to the Seahawks. Not really all that relevant but I hate Brady for the beard he’s making me grow.
- Robert Griffin is good. Like really good. I avoided him coming off the concussion, but after a 76-yd TD run (longest by a QB since Kordell Stewart in 1996) I’m really wishing I would have played him a bit.
- And lastly the Giants. Biggest win of the weekend to go into SF and beat down the team everyone seems to like for the Super Bowl out of the NFC. This was a dominating performance that cannot be overstated.
DFS News:
And in Breaking DFS news, the mediocrity continued for KC on Sunday. Running Back and Defenses have proved to be my demise from the beginning of this NFL season. Here are the (3) in particular that burned me this week:
GUYS THAT HURT
- Jamaal Charles – RB – (CHIEFS) – Prior to this week, Charles had rushed the ball 31, 17 and 33 times from weeks 2-4. Now your starting QB gets hurt and you only hand him the ball 12 times? And you give someone with the last name Eachus 5 carries? And Draughn 11 carries? Why are you doing this? What is the motivation Romeo ‘heartbreaker’ Crennel? Terrible play calling, terrible execution, and a terrible outcome for yours truly. Chiefs are the worst.
- Trent Richardson – RB – (BROWNS) – Okay, so we partially have an injury to blame for this one, but not completely. Richardson apparently injured his ‘flank’, or at least that’s what early reports on Sunday were saying. What the hell is a flank? I’ve never heard of this so its not a legit injury. Richardson listen to me, YOU ARE ALL THEY’VE GOT. You have to stay on the field. If not for your team, for daily fantasy players. When you have good matchups we are going to play you. Do not disappoint me again or you will find yourself on the PUPOF (Physically Unable to Perform on Field) list with the likes of Michael Turner and Stevie Johnson. No more flops from you kid. I’m serious.
- Indianapolis Colts – DEF – (INDY) – Yeah you could blame me for this one I guess… I mean who plays the Colts DEF ever? Well they were uber-cheap and they had the hapless Jets. Or so I thought they were hapless. But apparently Shonn Greene stored up every last bit of his legitimate running back skills and unleashed them on the Colts. 200 yards and 3 scores later, I found myself with a negative point scoring defense. This was the perfect culmination to my terrible weekend. I really, really sucked.

Sorry for all the negatively that this Review contained, but hey I can only write what I feel. Hopefully I find you in a better mood next time, but I can’t promise anything as well all know this is a game of ups and downs.
Until next time, hugs, kisses and untrimmed beards
