Happy Friday! We close out the week with a 10-game slate that looks pretty wide open on both the pitching and hitting sides. There is not a single pitcher priced above $10,000 on DK, and most of the offenses are bunched up with implied team totals between 4-5 runs, with no real standout matchups or great hitting conditions. I’ll work to get the pool narrowed down as much as possible, but this is definitely a slate where you can come to a lot of different conclusions.

Friday Pitching: MLB DFS Picks on DraftKings and FanDuel

I sort of see a top 3 at pitcher…or at least a top 2, but it’s all jumbled enough that I am going to group together everyone priced above $7,000 on DK.

TOP TIER AND MID-TIER PITCHING

• Bryce Miller at Rangers – 29.5% K, 4.1% BB, 2.27 ERA, 2.95 SIERA
• Logan Webb vs. Angels – 19.4% K, 6.2% BB, 3.87 ERA, 4.01 SIERA
• Shane McClanahan vs. Guardians – 22.5% K, 8.2% BB, 3.16 ERA, 4.13 SIERA
• Davis Martin vs. Astros – 22% K, 7.5% BB, 3.31 ERA, 4.05 SIERA
• Joey Cantillo at Rays – 24.6% K, 11.4% BB, 3.74 ERA, 4.30 SIERA
• MacKenzie Gore vs. Mariners – 25.7% K, 8.8% BB, 4.80 ERA, 3.89 SIERA
• Dustin May vs. Reds – 22.9% K, 7.7% BB, 4.78 ERA, 4.00 SIERA
• Trevor Rogers vs. Braves – 18.8% K, 7.8% BB, 4.28 ERA, 4.59 SIERA
• These three jokers – Spencer Arrighetti, Trey Yesavage, Roki Sasaki

I would say that we have a somewhat clear top 3, with Bryce Miller, Logan Webb, and Shane McClanahan. There are several other pitchers who can sneak up into that group, but for a starting point, I want to compare this trio.

Bryce Miller continues to have a completely elite skill set through 63 innings this season, with only 1 poor start on his ledger. He has been far better at home, as you’d expect, but we’re still looking at a 26.6% K rate with 5% walks and a 3.34 ERA on the road. The matchup is not especially good, with only 1 batter in the projected lineup for the Rangers above a 22.5% K rate against RHP this season, but it’s more or less an average matchup overall. This simply comes down to whether or not this breakout season in a relatively small sample size is real. While I’m not convinced that the range of a 29-30% K rate is real, I am convinced that he’s a very good – potentially great – pitcher. Everything about his skills and underlying stuff looks legit. Because of how projections will treat the long-term numbers, along with the matchups, I am expecting that Webb will be the chalk, and that makes me prefer Miller.

Logan Webb has been scuffling a bit recently, allowing 15 runs over his last 3 starts, and he is carrying just a 15.4% K rate with an 8.8% SwStr% over his last 5 starts. In theory, this matchup should help his strikeouts, but it’s still more likely that his potential upside comes from innings. Even in his struggles, he’s regularly up over 100 pitches, and he’s still managed 7+ innings in 9 of his starts this season. The recent downside is probably just fluke, and I would expect him to go right back to piling up quality starts. Between the strikeouts in the Angels lineup and Webb’s ground balls and limited barrels allowed, he would be my SP1 if playing cash games. I certainly have no issue at all with him as the SP1 in any format – I just think it’s worth playing the ownership game if it looks like we’re going to get a sizeable gap between him and Miller.
