Happy Saturday! We’ve got games spread out all over the day, but there’s just one main evening slate on both sites, an 8-gamer at the usual 7:05pm ET start time. If you’re playing the early 4-game slate this afternoon, we’ll have expert tags and analysis in LineupHQ, our MLB DFS optimizer, to help get you pointed in the right direction.

For the evening slate, it’s pretty light on pitching options, while the hitting side has the Phillies all alone at the top. We’ve also got a game with very dicey looking weather for the Cubs vs. Guardians. That will be an important one to keep an eye on with Shota Imanaga being one of the better pitching options on the slate.

Luzardo of the Phillies

While we do have a fairly wide range of salaries, we don’t really have a wide range of talent, so I’m just going to list everyone in one tier, and talk about the salaries as we go. We also have some fairly big price differences between the sites.

This slate gets tricky right away, as the only high-strikeout pitcher on the board is in Coors Field. Looking at his opening start this season shows both the upside and the risk, as he piled up 7 strikeouts but also allowed 6 runs with a couple homers against Texas. He really hasn’t had any major struggles with power the last few seasons while settling around the 28% K range with better-than-average control. The Rockies do have some right-handed power, and while there are plenty of strikeouts here, it’s not quite as extreme as it is against righties. He looks like the highest-upside pitcher on the board, but this is no sure thing. This is one of those cases where ownership matters to me. If you’ve read my stuff for a long time, you’ll know that I don’t really care about pitcher ownership when there are very clear best plays. But on a slate like this, when there is less clarity, I’m more apt to look for reasons to fade the chalk. It’s early, and I don’t have a strong sense of the ownership numbers yet, but my hunch is he’ll be one of the most popular pitchers, so I am leaning toward an underweight stance. If we end up losing Imanaga to the weather, I’ll be much more concerned about the Luzardo ownership.

Weather permitting, this is exactly the kind of slate where I have interest in a pitcher like Shota Imanaga. Outside of Luzardo, there is really no one you’re scared of missing a ceiling game from. So a consistent pitcher like Imanaga is more intriguing on a slate where a boring quality start can be good enough. His opening start was a little unusual, but for now, I’m assuming this is the same pitcher we’re seen that last couple years. That is a guy around average strikeout ability with elite control who is reliant on HR/FB%. Cleveland has a few righty power bats, but outside of Jose Ramirez, those righty power bats also come with a lot of strikeouts, and they are surrounded by some very non-threatening bats at the bottom of the lineup. I guess I’d say I ever so slightly prefer Luzardo on DK if the ownership were the same, but it’s close. On FD, Imanaga is still down at $8,000, while Luzardo is $10,100. There, Imanaga would be my SP1 if the weather clears, but as of now, I’m hesitant to use him until we get more clarity.
