Happy Thursday! We’ve got just a 5-game slate tonight, but as small slates go, this is a pretty fantastic one. We’ve got the best pitcher in the world on the mound, along with three other elite aces in playoff-caliber matchups. Even beyond that, we have a couple solid cheaper pitching options and an offensive slate that is spread out enough to be able to steer clear of any overwhelming chalk.

Now, before we get too excited, I’ve got to mention some bad news here – 2 of the 5 games, which happen to include the slate’s #1 pitcher and #1 offense, have some PPD risk due to dicey weather on the East Coast. HOU/NYY and MIL/NYM appear to have some legitimate risk, so we’ll need to be paying attention right up until lock before finalizing lineups. While LAD/ATL looks better than the New York games, we’re also not completely clear from some delay risk there either, which means all four elite pitchers have at least a slight bit of weather risk. I am going to write this article as if everything clears up and plays cleanly, but don’t forget to keep a close eye on these situations.

Thursday Pitching: MLB DFS Picks on DraftKings and FanDuel

This might be the best top tier of pitchers we’ve ever had for a 5-game slate. We have the best pitcher in the world along with three other elite aces in playoff-level matchups. This slate looks fantastic both in real life and for DFS.

TOP TIER PITCHING

• Jacob Misiorowski at Mets – 39.3% K, 6% BB, 1.68 ERA, 2.14 SIERA
• Chris Sale vs. Dodgers – 30.6% K, 5.2% BB, 2.20 ERA, 2.81 SIERA
• Yoshinobu Yamamoto at Braves – 24.9% K, 6% BB, 2.61 ERA, 3.48 SIERA
• Gerrit Cole vs. Astros – 26.6% K, 5.3% BB, 3.11 ERA, 3.38 SIERA

Even with four superstars, it’s pretty easy to say that Jacob Misiorowski is the SP1 if salary allows. He is just better than everyone else. But what I’ll say here is that of these four aces, he’s the one who could conceivably get an unexpectedly short outing. They have not been limiting him in his last few starts, but it wouldn’t be stunning to see it start happening in matchups against non-contending teams if they have a big lead. I’m not predicting it to happen like this, but I can see the world where they go back to pulling him after 5 innings and 80 pitches, rather than letting him go the 6 innings that he’s gotten in his last several starts. I am not building my rosters for that scenario, and I’m still planning on seeing the 95-ish pitchers and 6 great innings – this is just a reason why I won’t quite be going all-in on the Miz in every lineup. But really, even if he only goes 5 innings, he’s still the SP1.

After the Miz, it gets really tricky. There is not a huge difference in the matchups for any of Sale, Yamamoto, and Cole. None of these are easy matchups, but these are all good-enough pitchers to beat anybody.
