MLB DFS Top Stacks: Thursday, April 25th

MLB DFS is complex. Most articles on MLB DFS picks are about the individual players most likely to succeed on any given day, but the MLB DFS picks most likely to succeed aren’t always the MLB DFS picks we should be most likely to play. In this article, we will look at the MLB DFS process over the MLB DFS picks. And we’re looking at teams over individual players, using the features of the RotoGrinders Top Stacks tool. We’ll still look at the player projections that are available in our MLB Lineup Optimizer, LineupHQ. However, we’ll be more focused on collective ownership, optimal scores, and matchups of full stacks within the context of game selection and leverage.

The main difference between both major sites is that DraftKings offers the LAD/WAS game but FanDuel doesn’t. It seems like a pretty straightforward slate in terms of weather, as meteorologist Kevin Roth (welcome back) has just one game labeled “orange,” which is TOR/KC.

CHALK STACK

Padres at Dakota Hudson

The Padres have an implied team total north of 6 runs at Coors Field! And to paint a bigger picture, there is only one other team that is currently above 5 runs. That team is the Dodgers, who aren’t on the FanDuel slate, and that’s why San Diego’s pOWN% should be higher over there.

The Padres are a full stack or nothing for me. Hudson isn’t a good pitcher, but he’s been known as a sinker-baller throughout his career, which has resulted in a 51% ground-ball rate dating back to the beginning of 2023. Yes, the game is in Denver, but I’m certainly more reluctant to single out power bats against him.

Hudson strikes out nobody and walks his fair share of lefties. If a few of those hard-hit ground balls sneak through, then he could get into trouble. He’s given up at least 3 earned runs in each of his 4 starts this season and has 5 total barrels on his resume.

The Padres lineup lacks some punch without Manny Machado in it, but if you’re stacking, it does make sense to include Luis Campusano at a catcher position that normally isn’t that good in your lineup. I also like Ha-seong Kim (pretty much every slate), who has a high walk rate and is a major threat to steal a base or two.

Another path to the Padres scoring a bunch of runs is getting into that Colorado bullpen early. The Rockies own the 8th-worst ERA and 3rd-highest WHIP in the league.
