MLB Grind Down: Monday, April 27th
The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.
Note: Fantasy point averages listed use FanDuel scoring. For more info on FanDuel’s scoring system, check out the scoring systems section of our FanDuel review.

Pitcher Grind Down
Jason Vargas (FD: $6500, DK: $6300)
Pitching Stats:
2015: xFIP: 4.29 — Strikeout Rate: 11.6% — Walk Rate: 4.4% — Ground Ball Rate: 47.4%
2014: xFIP: 4.05 — Strikeout Rate: 16.2% — Walk Rate: 5.2% — Ground Ball Rate: 38.3%
Cleveland Indians vs. LH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.269 (Rank: 27)
Strikeout Rate: 20.8% (Rank: 19)
Analysis: Vargas has yet to have a great fantasy outing this season. In his first three starts of the year, he has posted a 4.29 xFIP with a low strikeout rate of 11.6%. Vargas has never been a high strikeout pitcher and the fact that his strikeout numbers are down this season is a bit of a red flag. Even though the Indians are ranked 27th in wOBA against left-handed pitching, they have a few right-handed bats in their lineup that should prove to be tough outs for Vargas.
Pitcher Rating:57.6
Corey Kluber (FD: $9800, DK: $10100)
Pitching Stats:
2015: xFIP: 2.36 — Strikeout Rate: 27.9% — Walk Rate: 4.5% — Ground Ball Rate: 47.2%
2014: xFIP: 2.57 — Strikeout Rate: 28.3% — Walk Rate: 5.4% — Ground Ball Rate: 48.0%
Kansas City Royals vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.348 (Rank: 3)
Strikeout Rate: 13.3% (Rank: 1)
Analysis: This is a situation where we have an elite ace on the mound against an elite offensive team in the Royals. Kansas City is ranked third in wOBA against right-handed pitching this season while striking out at the lowest rate of any team in baseball. That doesn’t necessarily mean that we have to avoid Kluber, but we should certainly factor it into his expected fantasy production. Kluber is one of the best pitchers in baseball and he should pitch well tonight. He just doesn’t have the same type of strikeout potential that he would in a different matchup.

Analysis: Santana is an affordable 1B option on FanDuel and a terrific C option on DraftKings. He has always hit left-handed pitching well throughout his career and he faces Jason Vargas tonight, who gave up a .321 wOBA to batters from the right side of the plate last season.

Aaron Sanchez (FD: $6100, DK: $5100)
Pitching Stats:
2015: xFIP: 5.37 — Strikeout Rate: 14.1% — Walk Rate: 18.8% — Ground Ball Rate: 53.5%
2014: xFIP: 3.00 — Strikeout Rate: 22.3% — Walk Rate: 7.4% — Ground Ball Rate: 65.9%
Boston Red Sox vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.305 (Rank: 15)
Strikeout Rate: 16.6% (Rank: 2)
Analysis: There are a few red flags with Sanchez, but none that stand out more than his K:BB ratio. His walk rate of 18.8% is higher than his strikeout rate this season. He has a below-average xFIP of 5.37 and he draws a difficult matchup against the Red Sox in Fenway Park. Sanchez is a sizable underdog in a game that features a total of 9.0 runs. He can safely be avoided in all league formats tonight.
Pitcher Rating:38.1
Joe Kelly (FD: $6700, DK: $5300)
Pitching Stats:
2015: xFIP: 3.46 — Strikeout Rate: 25.0% — Walk Rate: 6.9% — Ground Ball Rate: 39.6%
2014: xFIP: 4.19 — Strikeout Rate: 15.9% — Walk Rate: 10.1% — Ground Ball Rate: 54.9%
Toronto Blue Jays vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.333 (Rank: 7)
Strikeout Rate: 20.1% (Rank: 12)
Analysis: Kelly’s numbers have improved across the board this season. I’m not sure that these numbers will last throughout the course of the season, but I’ve been impressed thus far. He has a 3.46 xFIP with a strikeout rate of 25.0%. He has also shown better command, walking only 6.9% of the batters that he has faced. He draws a difficult matchup against the Blue Jays, but he should see plenty of run support with Aaron Sanchez on the mound opposite him. Kelly could be a cheap source for a win tonight, but the potential for a blow-up makes him a risky cash game play.

Position Eligibility: FD: 2B — DK: 2B
2015 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.443 — ISO: 0.217 — OBP: 0.431
Analysis: Travis has been terrific in his rookie season. He is 23-for-64 on the season with 11 extra-base hits and 16 RBIs. He is currently boasting a .443 wOBA and a .217 ISO against right-handed pitching. Analysis: Big Papi picked up right where he left off last season. He currently has a .396 wOBA and a .277 ISO against right-handed pitching. While the sample size is still extremely small, Aaron Sanchez has given up a .556 wOBA to batters from the left side of the plate. Hector Noesi (FD: $6100, DK: $5500)
Pitching Stats:
2015: xFIP: 5.17 — Strikeout Rate: 23.4% — Walk Rate: 14.9% — Ground Ball Rate: 32.1%
2014: xFIP: 4.29 — Strikeout Rate: 16.8% — Walk Rate: 7.6% — Ground Ball Rate: 38.0%
Baltimore Orioles vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.352 (Rank: 2)
Strikeout Rate: 23.6% (Rank: 29)
Analysis: Noesi is an easy pitcher to avoid in daily fantasy baseball. He has a high xFIP and a high walk rate. He is also a fly-ball pitcher that gets himself into trouble more often than not during his starts. While the Orioles do strike out at a fairly high rate, they are ranked second in wOBA against right-handed pitching this season. Noesi should not be on your radar tonight in Camden Yards.
Pitcher Rating:48.4
Ubaldo Jimenez (FD: $6600, DK: $7200)
Pitching Stats:
2015: xFIP: 3.12 — Strikeout Rate: 26.7% — Walk Rate: 11.7% — Ground Ball Rate: 68.6%
2014: xFIP: 4.48 — Strikeout Rate: 21.0% — Walk Rate: 13.9% — Ground Ball Rate: 41.3%
Chicago White Sox vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.313 (Rank: 9)
Strikeout Rate: 21.8% (Rank: 20)
Analysis: Jimenez has pitched well this season, but his 68.6% ground ball rate is unsustainable. He always offers good strikeout potential (26.7% strikeout rate this season), but he is a very risky cash game play. I’m not a fan of targeting pitchers that struggle with their command and Jimenez has had a walk rate over 10% in each of his last four season. Jimenez should get plenty of run support tonight, but he will likely give up a few runs of his own. I have him pegged as a tournament play tonight against the White Sox.

Analysis: Abreu is a tough out every time he steps up to the plate. He hits right and left-handed pitching well and he can hit for both average and for power. He currently has a .481 wOBA and a .391 ISO against right-handed pitching this season and he draws a favorable matchup against Ubaldo Jimenez in the hitter-friendly Camden Yards.

Analysis: Paredes has been on fire recently. In his last ten games, he has racked up 17 hits (nine went for extra bases), 9 RBIs, and 10 runs. Most players in the majors would take those numbers over the course of an entire month, let alone over ten games. Hopefully he will be batting near the top of the order tonight against Hector Noesi.

New York Yankees vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.313 (Rank: 9)
Strikeout Rate: 21.9% (Rank: 21)
Analysis: Karns has had mixed results in his first four starts of the season. He currently has a 4.84 xFIP with a strikeout rate of 19.8%. He has thrown at least 106 pitches in each of his last three starts, but until he can cut down on his walks, he will be nothing more than a tournament play. He draws a difficult matchup against the Yankees, who are ranked ninth in wOBA against right-handed pitching this season.
Pitcher Rating:51.9
Adam Warren (FD: $6800, DK: $4300)
Pitching Stats:
2015: xFIP: 5.26 — Strikeout Rate: 9.1% — Walk Rate: 12.1% — Ground Ball Rate: 50.0%
2014: xFIP: 3.28 — Strikeout Rate: 23.5% — Walk Rate: 7.4% — Ground Ball Rate: 45.4%
Tampa Bay Rays vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.322 (Rank: 8)
Strikeout Rate: 20.8% (Rank: 16)
Analysis: Warren’s numbers from 2014 look a lot better than they do this season, but we have to understand that it’s a much different story coming out of the bullpen than it is being a starter. Warren has been a little bit of a disappointment in his first three starts this year, but he’s a small favorite tonight at home against the Rays. Warren is over-priced on FanDuel, but he could be worth a look as a tournament play on DraftKings at his bargain-bin price of only $4,300.

Analysis: The Yankees have to be excited about the production that they are getting from both Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez. Teixeira has been terrific against right-handed pitching, posting a .427 wOBA this season. Teixeira always sees a boost at home with a right-handed pitcher on the mound, as Yankee Stadium grades out as the seventh-best hitters park for those that hit from the left side of the plate.

Cincinnati Reds vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.287 (Rank: 23)
Strikeout Rate: 20.2% (Rank: 13)
Analysis: Nelson has already posted two terrific starts in his first three appearances of the season. He is coming off of a strong performance against the Reds, where he only gave up one run in eight innings of work. He currently owns a 3.04 xFIP with a strikeout rate of 25%. He gets to face the same Reds’ offense tonight, although this time he has to face them on the road. It’s tough for pitcher to have two dominant outings in a row against the same team, which is why he makes more sense as a tournament play tonight.

wOBA: 0.269 (Rank: 26)
Strikeout Rate: 23.2% (Rank: 26)
Analysis: Marquis is currently averaging 12.6 strikeout per nine innings. His strikeout rate of 29.6% is unsustainable, as his highest strikeout rate in his career was 17.6% and that was in 2001. I’m not buying in on Marquis, even in a favorable matchup against the Brewers. His cheap price point will likely draw some attention tonight, but I’m not drinking the Kool-Aid just yet.

Analysis: Hamilton is a stolen base machine. He already has 13 on the season, five of which have come in the last four games. He doesn’t offer a lot of power in his bat, but each stolen base is worth as much as a double.
