MLB Grind Down: Monday, June 1st

The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.

The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

Remember, these writeups are done prior to lineups being released, so make sure to check our Starting Lineups page to ensure the recommended options are playing.

R.A. Dickey (FD: $7500, DK: $7200)

Pitching Stats:
2015: IP: 64 — SIERA: 4.96 — K Rate: 12.8% — K/9: 4.92 — BB Rate: 8.4% — FB Rate: 33.6% — HR/FB: 16.9%

Washington Nationals vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.323 (Rank: 6) — Strikeout Rate: 20.7% (Rank: 19) — wRC+: 103 (Rank: 8)

Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.76 (Rank: 19)

Analysis: Dickey has given up at least for earned runs in each of his last four starts. On the season, he owns a 4.96 SIERA with a uncharacteristically low K/9 of 4.9. He doesn’t have great command and he draws a difficult matchup tonight against the Nationals, who are ranked 6th in wOBA (.323) and 8th in wRC+ (103) against right-handed pitching this season. Dickey is a sizable underdog that offers more risk than potential reward.

Pitcher Rating:43.5

Jordan Zimmermann (FD: $8900, DK: $8600)

Pitching Stats:
2015: IP: 60 — SIERA: 4.23 — K Rate: 16.3% — K/9: 6.08 — BB Rate: 5.6% — FB Rate: 35.9% — HR/FB: 4.3%

Toronto Blue Jays vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.321 (Rank: 9) — Strikeout Rate: 20.7% (Rank: 19) — wRC+: 102 (Rank: 9)

Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.81 (Rank: 13)

Analysis: Zimmermann got off to a shaky start this season, but he’s been sharp in his last three starts. In those outings, he has pitched 19 innings, while striking out 17 batters and only giving up a combined 3 earned runs. His matchup against the Blue Jays may not be ideal, but Vegas likes Zimmermann in this matchup, as he is installed as a (-152) favorite in a game that features a low total of 7.5 runs. I expect Zimmermann to pitch well tonight, but he’s still a little overpriced for what he brings to the table.

Analysis: Harper finished the month of May ranking first in the majors in basically every offensive category. He had 31 hits, 13 home runs, 28 RBIs, 24 runs, and 22 walks drawn. WOW! He’ll look to start the month of June off on a high note, as he takes on R.A. Dickey at home. Harper may be a little too expensive to use on FanDuel ($5,900), but he’s one of the top outfield options on the board tonight on DraftKings ($4,800).

Analysis: Pelfrey’s numbers are all trending in the right direction this season, but he’ll need a lot more strikeouts before being recommended as an option in daily fantasy baseball. He owns a 4.45 SIERA this season with a very low K/9 of 4.5. The upside isn’t there with Pelfrey. Even though the Red Sox offense has been a disappointment recently, they should be able to get their bats going tonight at home.

Analysis: Buchholz has pitched well in his last three starts. During that stretch, he has pitched 22.2 innings, struck out 19 batters, and has only given up 5 combined earned runs. His indicators continue to look great, as he owns a 3.21 SIERA with a K/9 of 9.3. He should see plenty of run support tonight with Mike Pelfrey on the mound. He also draws a favorable matchup against the Twins, who are ranked 24th in wOBA (.294) and 25th in strikeout rate (22.2%) against right-handed pitching this season.

Analysis: Hammel is having an outstanding season. He owns a 2.99 SIERA with a K/9 of 8.7. He has a low walk rate of 3.0% with a strikeout rate of 24.6%, yet he is still priced as a slightly-above average starter. He’s priced under $9,000 on FanDuel and under $8,000 on DraftKings. He’s only a small favorite on the road tonight, but he should be considered one of the top pitching options on the board. The Marlins are ranked 27th in wOBA (.292) and 21st in strikeout rate (20.8%) against right-handed pitching this season.

Analysis: Urena will be making his second career major league start tonight. He struggled in his debut, allowing five earned runs in only 4.2 innings of work. The Cubs may strike out at the highest rate of any team against right-handed pitching this season, but I need to see more from Urena before targeting him in daily fantasy. The Cubs are a very sneaky offense to target tonight.

Analysis: Fiers is a hittable high-strikeout pitcher. That’s not how you would describe many pitchers in baseball, but it’s pretty accurate. He has great strikeout potential, but he can also be knocked around at times. Fiers is a full fade for me tonight against the Cardinals, who are ranked 7th or better in wOBA (.323), strikeout rate (18.6%), and wRC+ (105) against right-handed pitching this season. Tonight is a great opportunity for him to post his best start of the season. He draws one of the best pitching matchups in baseball, as the Brewers are ranked 28th in wOBA (.274), strikeout rate (23.9%), and wRC+ (68) against left-handed pitching this season. Analysis: Jimenez has given up at least two earned runs in each of his last five starts, but he’s been able to avoid the really bad outing this season. He owns a 3.36 SIERA with a K/9 of 8.2. He has been dominant against right-handed hitters, which should help his cause tonight against the Astros. He has great strikeout potential in this matchup, but he is still a risky cash game option. Analysis: Oberholtzer will be activated from the DL to make his second start of the season. He is coming off of a decent 2014 campaign, where he posted a 4.27 SIERA with a K/9 of 5.9. He has somewhat limited upside though and the Orioles have a very capable offense. Even though they are ranked 22nd in wOBA against left-handed pitching this season, they still have quite a few right-handed bats in their lineup that can mash against southpaws.

Manny Machado (FD: $3100, DK: $4000)

Position Eligibility: FD: 3B — DK: 3B
2015 vs. LH Pitching: PA: 203 — wOBA: 0.257 — ISO: 0.053 — wRC+: 59
2014 vs. LH Pitching: PA: 354 — wOBA: 0.281 — ISO: 0.125 — wRC+: 76

Analysis: Machado has been hit or miss this season, but he’s in a great spot tonight. He is facing an average left-handed pitcher in one of the best hitter’s parks in all of baseball. His numbers against southpaws haven’t been great this season, but he actually has pretty similar splits against left and right-handed pitching in his career.

Secondary Plays:

Adam Jones (FD: $2800, DK: $4300) – If he’s in the lineup tonight (currently listed as DTD with an ankle sprain).
