Minnesota Twins vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.283 (Rank: 27)
Strikeout Rate: 23.4% (Rank: 28)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.80 (Rank: 16)
Analysis: Kelly has really pitched well this season, but there is no one buying in on him. He has no believers outside of Boston, which makes him a great tournament option. On the season, he owns a 3.95 SIERA with a K/9 of 8.2. He has struggled with his command at times, but his high strikeout rate makes up for the walks. He draws a terrific matchup against the Twins, who are ranked 27th in wOBA (.283) and 28th in strikeout rate (23.4%) against right-handed pitching this season. At his price point, he’s worth a look as a tournament play on both FanDuel and DraftKings.
Pitcher Rating:63.2
Ricky Nolasco (FD: $6000, DK: $6800)
Pitching Stats:
2015: IP: 24 — SIERA: 4.19 — K Rate: 19.3% — K/9: 8.25 — BB Rate: 8.8% — FB Rate: 33.3% — HR/FB: 3.7%
2014: IP: 159 — SIERA: 4.06 — K Rate: 16.6% — K/9: 6.51 — BB Rate: 5.5% — FB Rate: 35.9% — HR/FB: 11.6%
Boston Red Sox vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.313 (Rank: 13)
Strikeout Rate: 16.4% (Rank: 3)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 4.00 (Rank: 2)
Analysis: Nolasco has pitched well in his last two starts and he’s starting to turn some heads. I’m still not believing just yet though. If he can dominate the Red Sox lineup today, then he’ll get my attention. The price is cheap, but he’s still a risky fantasy option at this point. The Red Sox are not a team that strikes out often and they have averaged the 2nd most pitches per plate appearance this season. He’s a deep tournament play at best.

David Ortiz (FD: $2900, DK: $4500)
Position Eligibility: FD: 1B — DK: 1B

2014 vs. RH Pitching: PA: 602 — wOBA: 0.364 — ISO: 0.248 — wRC+: 131
Analysis: Ortiz is still only $2,900 on FanDuel. At that price, he will likely be the most popular play at first base. He has been good against both left and right-handed pitching this season, but we typically prefer using him when a righty is on the mound. In 2015, Ortiz has a .402 wOBA and a .234 ISO against righties. He also has three home runs in only ten career at-bats against Ricky Nolasco.

Chicago Cubs vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.307 (Rank: 17)
Strikeout Rate: 25.9% (Rank: 30)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 4.00 (Rank: 1)
Analysis: Roark will draw his first start of the season, after making 13 appearances out of the bullpen. It’s hard to see him pitching very deep into this game, as he has yet to throw more than 61 pitches in any game this season. He can safely be avoided against the Cubs in a game where the wind looks like it will be blowing out to center.
Pitcher Rating:38.0
Tsuyoshi Wada (FD: $6400, DK: $7600)

Washington Nationals vs. LH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.318 (Rank: 18)
Strikeout Rate: 21.6% (Rank: 19)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.79 (Rank: 17)
Analysis: At the time of writing this, Vegas has yet to set a run total. It appears that the wind is blowing out hard to center field though, which means the total could easily end up being close to double-digits. If that’s the case, both pitchers should be avoided and both offenses should be targeted.

Ian Desmond (FD: $3100, DK: $4500)
Position Eligibility: FD: SS — DK: SS

2014 vs. LH Pitching: PA: 648 — wOBA: 0.341 — ISO: 0.167 — wRC+: 117
Analysis: If the wind is blowing out to center and the total for the game ends up being one of the higher totals on the board, it may not be a bad idea to load up hitters from this game. The ball carries in Wrigley when the wind is blowing out, especially when it’s warm (expected to be in the upper 70’s today). Desmond has struggled against southpaws this season, but he did have a .341 wOBA against left-handed pitching last year.

2014 vs. RH Pitching: PA: 616 — wOBA: 0.391 — ISO: 0.253 — wRC+: 149
Analysis: Again, if the wind is blowing out in Wrigley today, load up on hitters from both teams. Rizzo doesn’t need the help of the wind to knock the ball out of the park, but if it’s strong enough, it could turn an average fly ball into a home run. Rizzo has really hit right-handed pitching well this season with a .409 wOBA and a .273 ISO.

wOBA: 0.318 (Rank: 10)
Strikeout Rate: 17.8% (Rank: 6)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.92 (Rank: 4)
Analysis: Klein pitched well in his first career major league start, but he’s not a top pitching prospect and he had mediocre numbers in the minor leagues. He’ll likely struggle in his second start, as he draws a very tough matchup against the Indians. On the season, Cleveland is ranked 10th in wOBA (.318) and 6th in strikeout rate (17.8%) against right-handed pitching this season. He’s a small underdog in a game that features a total of 8.5 runs.

Pitching Stats:

wOBA: 0.300 (Rank: 19)
Strikeout Rate: 20.8% (Rank: 20)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.82 (Rank: 11)
Analysis: Marcum is coming off of a strong start against the White Sox, but he’ll need more than one good outing before he becomes a trustworthy fantasy option. He is a risky fantasy option today against the Rangers, whose offense has been much better in recent weeks. There are better options for both cash games and GPPs.

Analysis: After an awful month of April, Choo’s bat has come alive here in the month of May. He is 30-for-95 with 15 extra-base hits and 17 RBIs. His wOBA against right-handed pitching on the season is up to .374 and he provides a nice combination of both speed and power.

2014 vs. RH Pitching: PA: 676 — wOBA: 0.401 — ISO: 0.197 — wRC+: 164
Analysis: Brantley is one of those players that I love paying up for in cash games. He has a very high floor (if there is such a thing in baseball) and he does everything well. He hits both left and right-handed pitching well, he has good power in his bat, and he has good speed on the bases. He draws a favorable matchup today against Phil Klein, who is unproven at the major league level.

wOBA: 0.319 (Rank: 9)
Strikeout Rate: 18.8% (Rank: 7)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.68 (Rank: 27)
Analysis: Anderson has been a serviceable starter for the Diamondbacks this season, but he’s not a pitcher that is on my radar in the early slate of games. He has a low strikeout rate and a difficult matchup on the road against the Cardinals. St. Louis is currently ranked 9th in wOBA (.319) and 7th in strikeout rate (18.8%) against right-handed pitching. Anderson is one of the largest underdogs in the early slate of games.

wOBA: 0.313 (Rank: 13)
Strikeout Rate: 19.6% (Rank: 11)

Analysis: Martinez may be erratic at times, but there is no doubting the talent that he has. When he’s throwing strikes, he is one tough customer. On the season, he owns a 3.77 SIERA with a K/9 of 9.3. His 11% walk rate is a bit concerning, but the high strikeout rate and the relatively cheap price tag makes up for it. He’s a large favorite (-160) and he should have plenty of run support to help his cause. He’s in play as an SP1 on single-pitcher sites and as an SP2 on multi-pitcher sites.

Oakland Athletics vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.326 (Rank: 4)
Strikeout Rate: 17.2% (Rank: 5)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.89 (Rank: 7)
Analysis: Greene has been a serviceable starter for the Tigers this season, but his strikeouts are way down this season. It doesn’t help that he is facing an A’s offense that is currently ranked 7th or better in wOBA, strikeout rate, and pitches per plate appearance against right-handed pitching this season. He’s a small favorite in this game, but he has very limited upside against the A’s in Oakland.

wOBA: 0.328 (Rank: 3)
Strikeout Rate: 19.2% (Rank: 9)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.86 (Rank: 9)
Analysis: Hahn has pitched well this season, but his strikeouts are down this season. He can also be avoided today, as he draws one of the toughest matchups on the board. The Tigers are currently ranked 9th or better in wOBA, strikeout rate, and pitches per plate appearance against right-handed pitching this season.
