MLB Grind Down: Monday, May 4th

The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.

The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

Remember, these writeups are done prior to lineups being released, so make sure to check our Starting Lineups page to ensure the recommended options are playing!

Note: Fantasy point averages listed use FanDuel scoring. For more info on FanDuel’s scoring system, check out the scoring systems section of our FanDuel review.

David Phelps (FanDuel: $6400, DraftKings: $4900)

Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 4.93 — K Rate: 15.4% — K/9: 5.79 — BB Rate: 9.0% — GB Rate: 27.6%
2014: SIERA: 4.21 — K Rate: 18.5% — K/9: 7.33 — BB Rate: 9.3% — GB Rate: 41.2%

Washington Nationals vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.288 (Rank: 25)
Strikeout Rate: 22.3% (Rank: 24)

Analysis: Phelps has been sharp in his last two starts, allowing only two earned runs in 13 innings of work while striking out nine batters. Even after those two quality outings, he still has a 4.93 SIERA with a K/9 of only 5.8. He struggles with his command at times and he has a very low ground-ball rate. He draws a decent matchup against the Nationals, but he’ll have to face them in Washington. He’s a sizable underdogs against an offense that is slowly turning it around.

Pitcher Rating:56.6

Jordan Zimmermann (FD: $8900, DK: $8800)

Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 4.36 — K Rate: 15.4% — K/9: 5.86 — BB Rate: 5.1% — GB Rate: 34.4%
2014: SIERA: 3.15 — K Rate: 22.8% — K/9: 8.20 — BB Rate: 3.6% — GB Rate: 40.1%

Miami Marlins vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.306 (Rank: 13)
Strikeout Rate: 21.3% (Rank: 21)

Analysis: Zimmermann has not pitched well in his first five starts of the season. He currently owns a 4.36 SIERA with a K/9 of only 5.9. His strikeouts are down from where they have been in year’s past and his walks are up. That’s not a great combination, but again the sample size is still relatively small. He has always pitched well at home in Nationals Park and the Marlins present a favorable matchup for strikeouts (ranked 21st in K-rate against right-handed pitching). He has a good chance to bounce back tonight, but his price is still a bit too expensive considering the way that he has pitched to open the season.

Dee Gordon (FD: $3800, DK: $4500)

Position Eligibility: FD: 2B — DK: 2B
2015 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.424 — ISO: 0.069 — OBP: 0.468
2014 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.310 — ISO: 0.090 — OBP: 0.322

Analysis: Gordon got the afternoon off on Sunday, but will be back in the lineup on Monday night. He has been terrific as a member of the Marlins, batting a cool .440 with 11 RBIs, 15 runs, and 11 stolen bases. He currently has a .468 OBP against right-handed pitching, which is what we love to see from speed players at the top of the lineup.

Secondary Plays:

2014 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.338 — ISO: 0.144 — OBP: 0.348

Analysis: Phelps is a reverse-splits pitcher for the most part, but that doesn’t mean that we can only target right-handed hitters against him. The pitcher is only half of the equation. The other half is the batter. Harper has a .402 wOBA and a .270 ISO against right-handed pitching this season. His price is still affordable across the industry and he is one of the top overall plays in the outfield.

Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 3.14 — K Rate: 22.7% — K/9: 9 — BB Rate: 4.6% — GB Rate: 53.3%
2014: SIERA: 3.70 — K Rate: 18.2% — K/9: 7.14 — BB Rate: 5.5% — GB Rate: 45.3%

Toronto Blue Jays vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.324 (Rank: 9)
Strikeout Rate: 21.8% (Rank: 22)

Analysis: Whitley gave up a single earned run in his first start of the season, striking out five batters in five innings of work. He had a pretty solid rookie campaign last year, posting a 3.70 SIERA with a K/9 of 7.1. Unfortunately, he has to travel to Toronto to take on a Blue Jays’ offense in the hitter-friendly Rogers Centre. This game has the second-highest total on the schedule tonight and Whitley is a small underdog. There is very little fantasy appeal here.

Pitcher Rating:47.7

R.A. Dickey (FD: $7400, DK: $7000)

Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 4.86 — K Rate: 14.9% — K/9: 5.81 — BB Rate: 9.7% — GB Rate: 43.8%

New York Yankees vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.310 (Rank: 11)
Strikeout Rate: 21.1% (Rank: 19)

Analysis: Dickey is an easy pitcher to avoid in daily fantasy baseball. When targeting pitchers, we like to look for consistency (high-floor) and upside (high-ceiling). Dickey is the exact opposite. He has a very low floor and his strikeout rate continues to decline, which lowers his ceiling as well. On the season, he has a 4.86 SIERA with a K/9 of only 5.8. He should have a tough time with this Yankees’ offense in the hitter-friendly Rogers Centre.

2014 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.312 — ISO: 0.137 — OBP: 0.316

Analysis: We don’t target Ellsbury for his power, we target him for his speed and for his ability to score runs. He has racked up 14 hits, five runs, and five stolen bases in his last five games alone. He has a decent track record against R.A. Dickey (6-for-16 with two stolen bases) and he has the splits in his favor as Dickey has given up a .384 wOBA to left-handed hitters this season.

Position Eligibility: FD: 2B — DK: 2B
2015 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.402 — ISO: 0.197 — OBP: 0.400

Analysis: Travis is already garnering All-Star consideration (at least from Toronto fans). He is off to a terrific start this season, posting a .402 wOBA against right-handed pitching. He hit a grand-slam yesterday and now gets to head back home to the hitter-friendly Rogers Centre. His price has finally come up across the industry, but it’s still too cheap for the type of production that he is capable of. While it’s an expensive stack, the Blue Jays are one of the top offenses to target tonight.

Atlanta Braves vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.310 (Rank: 11)
Strikeout Rate: 17.1% (Rank: 5)

Analysis: Harang dominated the Braves last week, pitching eight scoreless innings while striking out six batters. It was by far his best start of the season so far, but it’s very difficult to dominate a lineup two times, especially when those outings are close together. The Braves’ offense has been much better than anyone could have expected, as they are ranked 11th in wOBA against right-handed pitching, striking out at the fifth-lowest rate of any team. I’m not jumping on the Harangatang bandwagon tonight, as I feel there are better options at his price point.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. LH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.322 (Rank: 13)
Strikeout Rate: 15.1% (Rank: 4)

Analysis: Wood’s numbers are trending in the wrong direction. His SIERA and walk rate are both up from where they were last season, while his strikeout rate is markedly lower. We have started to see signs of life though, as he struck out eight batters in his last start against the Nationals. The Phillies aren’t a team that strikes out all that often, but they have an average team wOBA against left-handed pitching. Wood is a sizable favorite (-150) in a game that features a low total of only 7.0 runs.

Analysis: Pierzynski has been my go-to value play at catcher this season and he’s in play once again, as the Braves take on Aaron Harang at home. Harang has pitched well this season, but he gave up a .330 wOBA to left-handed hitters in 2014. Pierzynski, on the other hand, has been terrific against right-handed pitching, posting a .435 wOBA and a .250 ISO this season. And guess what? Boston Red Sox vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.317 (Rank: 10)
Strikeout Rate: 16.2% (Rank: 2)

Analysis: Odorizzi has had some glaring home/road splits throughout his career. His SIERA, walk rate, and wOBA allowed are all much higher on the road than they are in his starts at home. He does offer good strikeout potential, but I’d rather target him in the friendly home-confines of Tropicana Field. Odorizzi draws a difficult matchup against the Red Sox, who are currently ranked tenth in wOBA against right-handed pitching, striking out at the second-lowest rate of any team this season.

Tampa Bay Rays vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.292 (Rank: 22)
Strikeout Rate: 22.3% (Rank: 24)

Analysis: Buchholz is still being priced based on his 2014 production, which is why he is so affordable on both FanDuel and DraftKings. He looks like a completely new pitcher this season, posting a 2.81 SIERA with a K/9 of 11.9. His strikeout potential is back and so is his ability to produce ground-ball outs at an elite rate. He draws a favorable matchup against the Rays, who are ranked 22nd in wOBA against right-handed pitching. The Rays also strike out at the seventh-highest rate against righties this season. In terms of value, Buchholz is one of the top pitching options on the board.

Milwaukee Brewers vs. LH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.207 (Rank: 30)
Strikeout Rate: 25.0% (Rank: 26)

Analysis: Kershaw may own a 3.73 ERA this season, but don’t let that fool you. ERA is your grandmother’s statistic to gauge how well a pitcher is pitching. SIERA and xFIP are both more telling, as they calculate what a pitcher can actually control. Kershaw’s 2.15 SIERA and K/9 of 12.4 are actually BETTER than those of last season in terms of fantasy production. He is the elite pitching option on the board tonight, as he faces a Brewers’ offense that is ranked dead-last in wOBA against left-handed pitching. Let me offer a little bit of advice: target Kershaw in ALL cash games tonight and don’t be afraid to use him in tournaments, as he draws the highest pitcher rating that we have seen so far this season.

He doesn’t walk many batters, but he gives up a ton of home runs and he draws one of the worst matchups on the schedule tonight. The Dodgers lead the majors in team wOBA against right-handed pitching. Lohse will also struggle with run support, as Clayton Kershaw is pitching opposite him tonight.

Adrian Gonzalez (FD: $4300, DK: $4200)

Position Eligibility: FD: 1B — DK: 1B
2015 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.521 — ISO: 0.432 — OBP: 0.432
2014 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.384 — ISO: 0.236 — OBP: 0.362

Analysis: Once again, I’m not a huge fan of BvP, but every now and then I’ll see a hitter that just owns a pitcher and that’s the case with Gonzalez tonight. He is 10-for-26 lifetime against Kyle Lohse with two home runs and five doubles. The rest of the stats also check out for Gonzalez, as he currently owns a .521 wOBA and a .432 ISO against right-handed pitching.
