MLB Grind Down: Thursday, May 7th
The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.
Remember, these writeups are done prior to lineups being released, so make sure to check our Starting Lineups page to ensure the recommended options are playing.

Drew Pomeranz (FanDuel: $6400, DraftKings: $6000)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 3.59 — K Rate: 21.6% — K/9: 8.23 — BB Rate: 5.2% — GB Rate: 35.3%
2014: SIERA: 3.62 — K Rate: 23.0% — K/9: 8.35 — BB Rate: 9.4% — GB Rate: 45.7%
Minnesota Twins vs. LH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.301 (Rank: 22)
Strikeout Rate: 18.7% (Rank: 11)
Analysis: After a strong opener against the Mariners, Pomeranz has now given up at least three earned runs in each of his past four starts. His indicators all look good though, as he has posted a 3.59 SIERA with a K/9 of 8.2. The biggest knock on Pomeranz is that the A’s tend to limit his pitch count whenever possible. He has only thrown 100 pitches one time this season, which does limit his upside. He draws a tough matchup against the A’s, who have recently had a ton of success against southpaws (see: Sale and Kazmir). He should get plenty of run support with Ricky Nolasco on the mound though.
Pitcher Rating:58.5
Ricky Nolasco (FD: $5200, DK: $5300)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 5.23 — K Rate: 15.0% — K/9: 6.75 — BB Rate: 12.5% — GB Rate: 39.3%
2014: SIERA: 4.06 — K Rate: 16.6% — K/9: 6.51 — BB Rate: 5.5% — GB Rate: 41.8%
Oakland Athletics vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.336 (Rank: 4)
Strikeout Rate: 16.0% (Rank: 1)
Analysis: Nolasco gave up six earned runs in his first start of the season and then gave up three more in his second start. He is looking to bounce back after a disappointing 2014 season, but so far his numbers are very close to where they were last year. He currently boasts a 5.23 SIERA with a K/9 of 6.8. He has also walked 12.5% of the batters that he has faced this season. There are too many red flags here, the most important being his matchup against the A’s. Oakland is ranked 4th in wOBA against right-handed pitching this season.

2014 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.367 — ISO: 0.239 — OBP: 0.330
Analysis: Reddick is swinging a hot bat over the last seven days, going 10-for-25 with 8 runs and 8 RBIs. He’s going to have plenty of RBI opportunities this season, as he will have the high on-base speedsters in Coco Crisp and Billy Burns batting ahead of him. Reddick has a .496 wOBA and a .286 ISO against right-handed pitching and he draws a terrific matchup against Ricky Nolaso, who gave up a .396 wOBA to left-handed hitters last season.

Analysis: Plouffe has hit left-handed pitching well throughout his career with a .355 wOBA and a .194 ISO. He is currently underpriced on FanDuel at $2,800, although he may be a little too expensive to use on DraftKings. He draws a favorable matchup against Drew Pomeranz, who has given up a .404 wOBA to right-handed hitters this season.

Carlos Frias (FD: $5800, DK: $4700)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 3.12 — K Rate: 16.7% — K/9: 5.87 — BB Rate: 6.7% — GB Rate: 65.2%
2014: SIERA: 2.99 — K Rate: 21.2% — K/9: 8.07 — BB Rate: 5.1% — GB Rate: 52.0%
Milwaukee Brewers vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.286 (Rank: 25)
Strikeout Rate: 22.9% (Rank: 27)
Analysis: Frias pitched well in his first start of the season, but he only threw 70 pitches and was only able to last 5.1 innings. The Dodgers will try to stretch him a bit further today, but he will still be on a pitch count, which really limits his upside. It will take a near perfect outing for him to pitch five or six innings, which is tough to bank on from a pitcher that is only making his third career start. The matchup against the Brewers is a favorable one, but Frias doesn’t provide enough upside for cash games or tournaments.
Pitcher Rating:54.6
Mike Fiers (FD: $7400, DK: $8600)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 2.97 — K Rate: 29.6% — K/9: 12.41 — BB Rate: 7.8% — GB Rate: 36.2%
2014: SIERA: 2.94 — K Rate: 27.7% — K/9: 9.54 — BB Rate: 6.2% — GB Rate: 33.3%
Los Angeles Dodgers vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.363 (Rank: 1)
Strikeout Rate: 20.0% (Rank: 15)
Analysis: We go from one pitcher with limited upside to another pitcher with as much upside as anyone on the board. Fiers may have a 4.74 ERA this season, but his indicators suggest that he is pitching much better than that. Through his first five starts, he has a 2.97 SIERA with an elite K/9 of 12.4. He is striking out nearly four times as many batters as he is walking. He does draw a difficult matchup against the Dodgers, but his immense strikeout potential more than makes up for it.

2014 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.293 — ISO: 0.000 — OBP: 0.387
Analysis: Remember when all Cris Carter would do was catch touchdowns? The same applies to Joc Pederson just with home runs. He hit two more home runs last night to bring his total up to nine on the season. He currently owns a .478 wOBA and a .451 ISO against right-handed pitching. Mike Fiers throws hard, but if Pederson can connect on one of those fastballs, it could go a long way.

Analysis: Lind was the featured play from the Brewers yesterday and he didn’t disappoint with a home runs, a double, 2 RBIs, and 2 runs scored. He has been terrific against right-handed pitching all season, posting a .422 wOBA and a .268 ISO. He draws a favorable matchup at home against Carlos Frias, who gave up a .348 wOBA to left-handed hitters last season.

Jake Arrieta (FD: $9700, DK: $9500)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 3.12 — K Rate: 24.4% — K/9: 8.81 — BB Rate: 6.3% — GB Rate: 50.6%
2014: SIERA: 2.83 — K Rate: 27.2% — K/9: 9.59 — BB Rate: 6.7% — GB Rate: 49.2%
St. Louis Cardinals vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.334 (Rank: 6)
Strikeout Rate: 16.3% (Rank: 4)
Analysis: Arrieta is coming off of one of his best seasons in the majors, posting a 2.83 SIERA and a K/9 of 9.6 in 2014. He is proving that it wasn’t a fluke, as he has posted nearly identical numbers to start the 2015 season. He has an elite strikeout rate and a fairly high ground-ball rate as well. The knock on him today is his matchup against the Cardinals. St. Louis is currently ranked 6th in wOBA against right-handed pitching, striking out at the 4th-lowest rate of any team this season. Arrieta is more of a tournament play at his price point.
Pitcher Rating:68.4
John Lackey (FD: $7600, DK: $7700)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 4.35 — K Rate: 13.2% — K/9: 5.12 — BB Rate: 5.9% — GB Rate: 48.6%
2014: SIERA: 3.64 — K Rate: 19.7% — K/9: 7.45 — BB Rate: 5.6% — GB Rate: 44.4%
Chicago Cubs vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.310 (Rank: 12)
Strikeout Rate: 24.6% (Rank: 30)
Analysis: Lackey is off to a slow start this season. His SIERA is up (4.35) while his strikeout rate is down considerably (13.2%). He sees a small boost in today’s matchup against the Cubs, who strike out at the highest rate of any team against right-handed pitching, but as we saw last night against Lance Lynn, the Cubs make pitchers work deep into counts. Lackey is a litte overpriced for his current level of production, which is why he makes more sense as a tournament play than a cash game play.

2015 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.413 — ISO: 0.091 — OBP: 0.492
Analysis: Bryant has yet to his first home run in the majors, but it’s coming. He is off to a great start as a rookie, posting a .413 wOBA against right-handed pitching with an even more impressive OBP of .492. He has shown great discipline at the plate and he has recorded at least 1.5 fantasy points (FanDuel) in eight of his last nine games, which is tough to do on a site that negates points for outs.

Kyle Lobstein (FD: $6300, DK: $5500)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 4.71 — K Rate: 11.1% — K/9: 4.26 — BB Rate: 8.3% — GB Rate: 54.1%

Chicago White Sox vs. LH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.232 (Rank: 29)
Strikeout Rate: 22.9% (Rank: 24)
Analysis: Lobstein is an easy pitcher to avoid in the early slate of games. He has not pitched well this season, posting a 4.71 SIERA with a low K/9 of 4.3. He has walked nearly as many batters as he has struck out. Even though the White Sox offense is one of the worst in the majors against left-handed pitching, I have a hard time seeing Lobstein pitch a gem against Jose Abreu and company.
Pitcher Rating:45.5
Jose Quintana (FD: $7200, DK: $7100)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 4.12 — K Rate: 16.9% — K/9: 6.52 — BB Rate: 5.7% — GB Rate: 41.5%

Detroit Tigers vs. LH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.332 (Rank: 7)
Strikeout Rate: 22.3% (Rank: 23)
Analysis: Quintana’s numbers are down across the board this season. By down, I mean trending in the wrong direction. His SIERA is higher than it was in 2014, which his strikeout rate and ground-ball rate are both lower. He draws a difficult matchup today against the Tigers, who are ranked 7th in wOBA against left-handed pitching this season. There is more risk with Quintana than potential reward and he can safely be avoided in all league formats.

Analysis: Martinez was the BvP play of the day yesterday and sure enough he came through with another home run off of Chris Sale. I’m still not a huge believer in BvP, but again, it can be telling when the sample size is big enough. Martinez faces another southpaw today in Jose Quintana. Martinez always has great splits against left-handed pitching and his price is very playable on both FanDuel and DraftKings.

Kansas City Royals vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.341 (Rank: 3)
Strikeout Rate: 16.8% (Rank: 5)
Analysis: There are very few times during the season that I wouldn’t want to target Corey Kluber, one of which is when he faces the Royals in Kansas City. The Royals are a team that doesn’t strike out and that thrives on scoring runs against the best pitchers in baseball. They are currently ranked 3rd in wOBA against right-handed pitching and we have seen them knock around top pitching time and time again this season (including Kluber). He still offers decent strikeout potential, but he’s overpriced for his matchup.

Cleveland Indians vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.310 (Rank: 12)
Strikeout Rate: 17.3% (Rank: 6)
Analysis: The first thing that you will notice with Volquez is his vast price difference between the two main sites. He is $1,800 cheaper on DraftKings than he is on FanDuel. His price is obviously too high to use on FanDuel, but he could serve as a viable SP2 on DraftKings. He has pitched well this season with a 3.68 SIERA and a K/9 of 7.1. He is a pitcher that produces a lot of ground-ball outs, which we like to see. The knock on Volquez today is that he has to face an Indians’ lineup that consists primarily of left-handed hitters.
