MLB Grind Down: Tuesday, May 5th
The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

Mat Latos (FanDuel: $6600, DraftKings: $7200)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 4.64 — K Rate: 17.5% — K/9: 7.29 — BB Rate: 9.3% — GB Rate: 29.0%
2014: SIERA: 4.08 — K Rate: 17.6% — K/9: 6.51 — BB Rate: 6.2% — GB Rate: 37.7%
Washington Nationals vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.290 (Rank: 24)
Strikeout Rate: 22.3% (Rank: 24)
Analysis: Happy Tuesday Grinders! Latos takes the mound for the Marlins tonight. He’s off to a slow start this season, posting a 4.64 SIERA with a K/9 of 7.3. His strikeouts are up from last season, but so are his walks. He is a fly-ball pitcher that often finds himself having to pitch out of jams. He’s one of the largest underdogs on the mound tonight, as the Nationals are a (-160) favorite. Given the lack of strikeout and win potential, he can be avoided in all league formats.
Pitcher Rating:51.5
Stephen Strasburg (FD: $9500, DK: $10200)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 3.45 — K Rate: 22.6% — K/9: 9.2 — BB Rate: 6.0% — GB Rate: 43.5%
2014: SIERA: 2.64 — K Rate: 27.9% — K/9: 10.13 — BB Rate: 5.0% — GB Rate: 45.9%
Miami Marlins vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.301 (Rank: 17)
Strikeout Rate: 21.7% (Rank: 23)
Analysis: Strasburg is one of everyone’s least favorite pitchers to see on the bump. If you have been playing daily fantasy baseball for a long period of time, then odds are that he has burned you at least once. We have to put our biases aside though and focus solely on the matchup. Strasburg hasn’t been as sharp as usual, but he still owns a 3.45 SIERA with a K/9 of 9.2. He draws a favorable matchup against the Marlins, who strike out at the eighth-highest rate against right-handed pitching this season. Strasburg also sees a boost at home in Nationals Park, as he has had terrific splits there throughout his career.

Analysis: There aren’t many times during the season that we can target Harper at an affordable price ($4,200 – $4,300) against an average right-handed pitcher. Harper has hit right-handed pitching well this season, posting a .393 wOBA and a .254 ISO. He draws a favorable matchup against Mat Latos, who has given up a .401 wOBA to left-handed hitters here in the early part of the 2015 season.

Pitching Stats:

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.279 (Rank: 27)
Strikeout Rate: 21.5% (Rank: 21)
Analysis: Lorenzen had a mediocre outing in his first career major-league start. He gave up three earned runs over five innings of work, while striking out five batters. He doesn’t provide a ton of strikeout potential, as he only averaged around seven per nine innings in his last two seasons in the minor leagues. Tonight he faces a Pirates’ offense that has been a big disappointment through the first month of the season. Even in a favorable matchup, he’s not a pitcher that is on my radar tonight. I like to target pitchers with a much higher floor.
Pitcher Rating:54.4
Jeff Locke (FD: $6700, DK: $6100)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 3.45 — K Rate: 20.4% — K/9: 7.94 — BB Rate: 7.1% — GB Rate: 55.1%

Cincinnati Reds vs. LH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.320 (Rank: 14)
Strikeout Rate: 23.1% (Rank: 22)
Analysis: Locke has pitched well this season with a 3.45 SIERA and a K/9 of 7.9. His numbers are all trending in the right direction, as he is striking batters out at a higher rate, while also producing ground balls at a higher rate. He draws a favorable matchup tonight against the Reds, who are ranked 14th in wOBA and 22nd in strikeout rate against left-handed pitching. Locke also gets to face them at home in the pitcher-friendly PNC Park, which ranks in the bottom seven in run production. At his price point, he deserves consideration as a GPP play and as an SP2 on multi-pitcher sites.

Analysis: Frazier is one of those players that always flies under the radar, even when he finds himself in a favorable matchup. He has hit left-handed pitching well this season, posting a .415 wOBA and a .500 ISO. He draws a favorable matchup against Jeff Locke, who gave up a .342 wOBA to right-handed hitters last season. Frazier can also steal a base every now and then, which only adds to his fantasy appeal.

Analysis: The Pirates’ offense has been ice cold to start the season, but maybe a home matchup against Michael Lorenzen can get their bats going. Polanco is a solid play at his price point on both FanDuel and DraftKings. He has good power against right-handed pitching and he’s always a threat to steal a base once he reaches. He already has nine extra-base hits and eight stolen bases this season.

Pitching Stats:

2014: SIERA: 3.38 — K Rate: 20.3% — K/9: 6.96 — BB Rate: 2.4% — GB Rate: 39.1%
Toronto Blue Jays vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.327 (Rank: 8)
Strikeout Rate: 21.6% (Rank: 22)
Analysis: Pineda is off to a great start in 2015, posting a 2.43 SIERA with a K/9 of 9.2. My favorite statistic is his walk rate. He has only walked 1.6% of the batters that he has faced so far this season. The big issue with Pineda tonight is his matchup against the Blue Jays in the Rogers Centre. Toronto is currently ranked eighth in wOBA against right-handed pitching and the Rogers Centre grades out as a top-five hitter’s park.
Pitcher Rating:65.7
Marco Estrada (FD: $6400, DK: $5700)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 3.41 — K Rate: 26.8% — K/9: 9.28 — BB Rate: 12.2% — GB Rate: 45.8%

New York Yankees vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.312 (Rank: 12)
Strikeout Rate: 20.7% (Rank: 19)
Analysis: Estrada will be making his first start of the season, after making six appearances out of the Blue Jays’ bullpen. He will take the rotation spot of Daniel Norris, who was optioned to Triple-A. Estrada was a decent starter last season, but he’ll likely be on a pitch count, as he has only pitched 10.2 innings in six different appearances this season. Add in the fact that he has to face a tough Yankees’ lineup in the hitter-friendly Rogers Centre and he is an easy pitcher to avoid tonight.

2015 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.404 — ISO: 0.288 — OBP: 0.377
Analysis: Marco Estrada has given up nearly identical splits in terms of handedness in his career, but he did give up a .342 wOBA to right-handed hitters last season. Rodriguez has been hit or miss this season, but he has hit right-handed pitching well, posting a .404 wOBA and a .288 ISO. He is cheap and offers good upside in the hitter-friendly Rogers Centre.

Analysis: Encarnacion has gotten off to a slow start this season, but he’s slowly turning it around. He is currently riding a seven-game hitting streak, where he has racked up seven hits, six runs, and five RBIs. His price is currently depressed a bit across the industry and he is always in play at home in the Rogers Centre, where he posted a .410 wOBA and a .314 ISO last season.

Atlanta Braves vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.313 (Rank: 11)
Strikeout Rate: 16.6% (Rank: 4)
Analysis: This will be Billingsley’s first start in the majors since 2013, when he underwent Tommy John surgery. He’s going to get a chance to stick around, as the Phillies signed him to a one-year deal. He hasn’t looked very sharp in his four minor league starts, posting a 4.82 FIP. He’s more risk than potential reward at this point and he can safely be avoided tonight against the Braves, who have hit right-handed pitching well this season.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.252 (Rank: 30)
Strikeout Rate: 19.9% (Rank: 14)
Analysis: Miller’s numbers look fairly identical to those from last season. He has a 4.18 SIERA with a K/9 of 7.1. He may not have the highest strikeout rate in the majors, but he can rack up 5-7 strikeouts per start. You have to love tonight’s matchup against the Phillies, who are ranked dead last in wOBA against right-handed pitching. If Miller can throw strikes and limit his walks, he should be in for a quality outing tonight at home. He should get plenty of run support with Chad Billingsley on the mound for the Phillies.

Analysis: Norris has been awful this season, posting a 5.20 SIERA with a K/9 of only 6.3. He has struggled with his command and his strikeouts are way down. His .355 BABIP against him won’t hold up over the course of the season, but this is not the time to take a chance on him. Analysis: Colon throws strikes and he throws a lot of them. He had a low walk rate of 3.6% last season and that number is down to 0.8% this year. He has pitched well in 2015 with a 3.40 SIERA and a K/9 of 6.9. His ability to control the strike zone helps him pitch deep into games. On paper, his matchup against the Orioles is a difficult one, but this is an interleague series that will be played under National League rules. Colon is a small favorite tonight in a game that features a low run total.

2014 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.394 — ISO: 0.270 — OBP: 0.372
Analysis: This hasn’t been the case in year’s past, but Duda has actually had a high floor this season. If you pull up his game logs, he has had a hit, run, or RBI in nine of his last ten games. He has always had good power against right-handed pitching and he draws a favorable matchup against the struggling Bud Norris, who has given up a .479 wOBA to left-handed hitters this season.
