MLB Grind Down: Wednesday, May 27th
The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.
Remember, these writeups are done prior to lineups being released, so make sure to check our Starting Lineups page to ensure the recommended options are playing.
Note: Fantasy point averages listed use FanDuel scoring. For more info on FanDuel’s scoring system, check out the scoring systems section of our FanDuel review.

Colby Lewis (FD: $6500, DK: $7200)
Pitching Stats:
2015: IP: 56 — SIERA: 4.08 — K Rate: 19.3% — K/9: 6.99 — BB Rate: 6.1% — FB Rate: 46.7% — HR/FB: 5.1%

Cleveland Indians vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.320 (Rank: 11) — Strikeout Rate: 0.180 (Rank: 6) — wRC+: 107 (Rank: 5)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.94 (Rank: 3)
Analysis: Lewis is having a solid season by his standards, but that doesn’t mean that he’s a recommended fantasy option today. He draws one of the worst pitching matchups on the board, as the Indians are ranked 6th or better in wOBA, strikeout rate, and wRC+ against right-handed pitching this season. The Indians also have the third most pitches per plate appearance. Basically, there is a sea of red flags with Lewis in this matchup.
Pitcher Rating:43.7
Carlos Carrasco (FD: $8700, DK: $9800)
Pitching Stats:
2015: IP: 49 — SIERA: 2.78 — K Rate: 28.2% — K/9: 10.58 — BB Rate: 5.8% — FB Rate: 29.8% — HR/FB: 10.3%
2014: IP: 134 — SIERA: 2.58 — K Rate: 26.5% — K/9: 9.40 — BB Rate: 5.5% — FB Rate: 27.7% — HR/FB: 7.1%
Texas Rangers vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.303 (Rank: 18) — Strikeout Rate: 0.208 (Rank: 20) — wRC+: 86 (Rank: 23)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.82 (Rank: 14)
Analysis: Carrasco is coming off of a strong start. He has been dominant this season with a 2.78 SIERA and a K/9 of 10.6. He keeps his walks down and he throws a ton of strikes, which helps him strike batters out, as well as pitch deep into games. He draws a fairly tough matchup against a surging Rangers’ offense, but he gets to face them at home. He has great strikeout potential today and he’s a sizable favorite against Texas.

Brantley has a .364 wOBA and a .167 ISO against right-handed pitching this season and he’s priced under $5,000 on both FanDuel and DraftKings.

Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.74 (Rank: 23)
Analysis: Even though he draws a better matchup than Colby Lewis, Kyle Kendrick is right there as one of the worst pitching options in the early slate of games. He has a 4.96 SIERA and a low K/9 of 5.1 this season. He walks too many batters and he has been giving up a ton of home runs this season. The Reds’ offense is in a great spot in this game.
Pitcher Rating:34.4
Mike Leake (FD: $6900, DK: $6100)
Pitching Stats:
2015: IP: 58 — SIERA: 4.53 — K Rate: 12.4% — K/9: 4.60 — BB Rate: 7.4% — FB Rate: 27.1% — HR/FB: 19.2%

wOBA: 0.329 (Rank: 2) — Strikeout Rate: 0.196 (Rank: 11) — wRC+: 91 (Rank: 17)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.74 (Rank: 22)
Analysis: Leake has not pitched well this season. He owns a 4.53 SIERA with a very low K/9 of 4.6. His strikeouts are down, while his walks are up. That’s not a great combination for a pitcher. While the Rockies are a different offense away from Coors Field, they are still ranked 2nd in wOBA against right-handed pitching. Leake should be avoided until he can string together a few quality outings in a row.

2014 vs. RH Pitching: PA: 648 — wOBA: 0.350 — ISO: 0.158 — wRC+: 107
Analysis: Once again, Blackmon is the recommended play on the Rockies. He has a .381 wOBA and a .193 ISO against right-handed pitching this season. He has good power for a leadoff hitter and he has already stolen ten bases this year. He draws a favorable matchup against Mike Leake, who has given up a .348 wOBA to left-handed hitters.

Analysis: Votto’s price is depressed on FanDuel, providing us with a fantastic buy low opportunity today against Kyle Kendrick, who has given up a .372 wOBA to left-handed hitters. Votto has been very good against right-handed pitching this season, posting a .387 wOBA and a .248 ISO. Load up on the Reds’ bats in this favorable matchup at home.

Analysis: Hand will draw the start for the Marlins today. While the Pirates’ offense has struggled this season, they are slowly starting to turn it around. Analysis: There are a few aces on the mound in the early slate of games, but Cole gets the nod as the top pitching option. He has been dominant this season with a 2.69 SIERA and a K/9 of 9.6. He has cut down on his walks and he has improved his ground-ball rate. Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.94 (Rank: 4)
Analysis: Young is a very tall pitcher. Unfortunately, height doesn’t equate to fantasy production. He has a 4.96 SIERA on the season with a low K/9 of 6.0. He draws a difficult matchup against the Yankees, who are ranked 11th or better in wOBA, strikeout rate, and wRC+ against right-handed pitching this season. Young also sees a negative park shift pitching in the hitter-friendly Yankee Stadium.

Analysis: Pineda is looking to bounce back after a very rough outing in his last start. His numbers on the season still look excellent though, as he has a 2.57 SIERA with a K/9 of 9.2. The issue isn’t his form, it’s his matchup. The Royals are ranked 4th or better in wOBA, strikeout rate, and wRC+ against right-handed pitching this season. Pineda may be worth a look on DraftKings, but he can safely be avoided today on FanDuel.

Analysis: Porcello has pitched well this season with a 3.91 SIERA and a K/9 of 7.8. He’s not a pitcher that will dominate an opponents lineup, but he typically gives his team a chance to win. He draws a favorable matchup on paper, as the Twins are ranked 27th in wOBA and 28th in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season. He’s an appealing tournament play in the early slate of games.

Pitches per Plate Appearance: 4.00 (Rank: 2)
Analysis: Hughes throws as many strikes as any pitcher in baseball. That typically helps a pitcher keep his walks down, and that’s the case here, as Hughes has only walked 2.5% of the batters that he has faced this season. His strikeouts are way down this season though, which is a major red flag. He can safely be avoided in a difficult matchup against the Red Sox.

2014 vs. RH Pitching: PA: 609 — wOBA: 0.316 — ISO: 0.078 — wRC+: 98
Analysis: Phil Hughes is a reverse-splits pitcher that gives up a much higher wOBA to right-handed hitters than he does to left-handed hitters. Pedroia has had a good season against right-handed pitching, posting a .343 wOBA and a .117 ISO. He’s a solid value play at second base on both FanDuel and DraftKings.
