MLB Pitching Primer: Friday, August 10th

Everything in the sport of baseball comes down to the hitter-versus-pitcher matchup – which makes pitching the most important element of MLB DFS play. Without an understanding of the best pitching plays on the day, your DFS efforts will be sunk! Each day, the Pitching Primer will provide you with some of the top pitching plays on the day – taking a close look at the “why” behind these picks, and helping you to identify pitchers others might overlook.

Arm To Trust

Gerrit Cole vs. Seattle Mariners

Cole is the very clear top arm on this slate, and he is also priced as such. He is $3,300 more than anyone on FDRFT, $2,100 on DK, and $900 on FD. Let’s discuss Cole and the matchup briefly before we go back to the same old question (can we fit him in?).

Cole leads the pitchers on this slate in many things, namely K% (35.1%), SIERA (2.90), and innings pitched (146.1). He went through a weird stretch in the middle of the season in which his walks were way too high, but it appears as though he is mostly back on track.

Interesting you didn’t mention the SD kid. He looks like the real deal. Impeccable K to BBs. I doubt he has control issues considering his minor league numbers. He’s a nice pairing with Cole to get all the bats you need.

Yes, the control seems much better, but the strikeouts are average at best. Throw in the superior groundball ability for Holmes and $1,700 in savings, that makes him the clear option in my eyes.
