MLB Pitching Primer: Wednesday, April 25th

Everything in the sport of baseball comes down to the hitter-versus-pitcher matchup – which makes pitching the most important element of MLB DFS play. Without an understanding of the best pitching plays on the day, your DFS efforts will be sunk! Each day, the Pitching Primer will provide you with some of the top pitching plays on the day – taking a close look at the “why” behind these picks, and helping you to identify pitchers others might overlook.

Clayton Kershaw vs. Miami Marlins

Pitching is pretty straightforward on the main slate considering we have Kershaw against the Marlins. I think we should start out with the Vegas numbers right off the bat to see how ridiculous they look. Kershaw is currently a -340 favorite (next closest is Taillon at -200), and the Marlins have an implied run total of 2.4 (next closest is Taillon’s opponent, the Tigers, at 3.1).

So yeah, I’d say Kershaw is in a decent spot tonight. Sure, the strikeouts are on the decline, but he is still elite at everything else. For instance, his BB% is currently sitting at a silly 2.3% right now. The groundballs are still there (48.3% GB%), and the Hard% (27.2%) is sitting right where it was last season (27.4%).

We know the Marlins project to be a terrible offense against lefties this season.

Unbelievable spot for offense in chicago today. Shields/Felix, wind out to right 15-25 mph, Seattle busting the last few days, day game, and Alfonso Marquez – one of the best hitters umps in baseball and 79th of 92 in called strikes. Oh yeah, and Coors is there to draw ownership :)

Is it viable to pay down for Shark in FD GPP to load up on bats in this game – mixing in Coors bats as well? The power in this game is set up to go absolutely bonkers. Also, I’ll be there today :)
