Happy Wednesday! Major League Baseball has 8 games on tap for tonight, beginning at 6:40 PM ET as the Pirates visit the Phillies. As always, it’s important to keep an eye on the MLB weather report before committing to any wagers. There are extremely hot temperatures in many cities, which could make life difficult on pitchers who will be making starts outdoors. The forecast temperature at first pitch is north of 90 degrees in Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Kansas City.
Below, you can find three of my favorite picks for Wednesday, July 1st!
Best MLB Player Props for Wednesday, July 1st
Here are my top player prop bets for tonight’s games, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:40 PM ET on Wednesday, July 1st:
- Paul Skenes Over/Under 7.5 Strikeouts
- Reynaldo Lopez Over/Under 3.5 Strikeouts
- Andrew Abbott Over/Under 4.5 Strikeouts
Paul Skenes UNDER 7.5 Strikeouts (-150, BetMGM)
Skenes owns a tremendous 34.8% strikeout rate across his last 6 starts, which is further supported by a 15.7% SwStr% and 78.7% in-zone contact rate allowed. That said, this is still a tall number for any pitcher to clear, particularly on a night in which the temperature is forecast to be 94 degrees with winds blowing out to right-center field.
The Phillies rank 4th in wRC+ against RHP during the last 14 days. They aren’t immune to the swing-and-miss, but they have a high out-of-zone contact% and take very few called strikes. If the Phillies can muster any offense against Skenes, it might be enough to get into a rested Pittsburgh arm barn before he can clear this number.
Reynaldo Lopez UNDER 3.5 Strikeouts (-151, DraftKings)
Lopez simply hasn’t been missing many bats. After being demoted to the bullpen, he struggled to an 8.4% SwStr% across 25 innings of work. Tonight, he will have to contend with a St. Louis lineup that makes a lot of contact – both in the zone and out of the zone. It’s also fair to wonder how long of a leash Lopez will have considering that he hasn’t faced more than 12 batters in a game since April 14th. There is value on the under at this price.
Andrew Abbott OVER 4.5 Strikeouts (+130, FanDuel)
Abbott enters play having recorded 5+ strikeouts in each of his last 5 starts. His 23.4% strikeout rate in that span is supported by a healthy 12.2% SwStr% and 84.2% in-zone contact allowed. Milwaukee’s offense is talented, but they do swing-and-miss fairly often. During the last 14 days, only 10 teams have a higher strikeout rate against LHP than Milwaukee. This is a playable price at plus money.
