MLB Parlay Piece for July 11, 2023
- National League Moneyline
- Freddie Freeman 2+ Total Bases
- Luis Arraez – Any Other Out/Outcome, 1st Plate Appearance
National League Moneyline (-110)
Entering play on Tuesday, the American League has won nine consecutive All-Star Game matchups. The National League last won in 2012 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City. Now, I’m well aware of the Monte Carlo fallacy, and I completely understand that tonight’s event is a statistically independent event from each of the last nine years. However, we must also recognize that the American League and National League rosters are relatively equal in the Mid-Summer Classic each year, and it is incredibly unusual to see such a long winning streak for either league. There is very little “sharp” information and next to no motivation analysis that significantly favors either team. As a result, I’m taking the National League because they are equally capable of winning tonight’s matchup, and the law of averages figures to establish itself sooner or later in this event.
Freddie Freeman 2+ Total Bases (+150)
Gerrit Cole has been very good in 2023, but he has been slightly worse against left-handed batters than he has against right-handed batters. Freddie Freeman owns a .919 OPS against right-handed pitching this season. Hitting in the 2-hole tonight, Freeman will get to have one mental at-bat before he steps into the batter’s box. He is a worthwhile inclusion in this longshot parlay, given the platoon splits for Cole and his success against right-handed pitching this year.
Luis Arraez – Any Other Out/Outcome, 1st Plate Appearance (-105)
Luis Arraez carries a .383 batting average into tonight’s event. Still, common sense tells us that the vast majority of his base knocks this year are against pitchers with far less talent than what he will see this evening. Arraez has struck out in only 5.2% of his total plate appearances in 2023, making it unlikely that we see that result. Arraez also doesn’t walk very much, making that an unlikely outcome, especially against a pitcher with good command. Thus, we are essentially hoping for a non-strikeout out to happen – a realistic possibility, if not a probable outcome in this context.
