NBA Core Plays: Tuesday, October 16th

Andy Means will be bringing Premium subscribers his top cash game plays and tournament pivots to build around. A former Duke basketball walk-on and now top-ranked DFS player, Andy will take an in-depth look into each of his core plays, and then blend it all together from a roster construction perspective. On weekends, the great Justin Van Zuiden takes the reigns.

Tuesday, October 16th

The NBA regular season is finally here! For those that read this article the past few years, welcome back. For those that are new, I appreciate you stopping by! Here is a quick review of what I am trying to accomplish with NBA Core Plays.

First and foremost, the Core Plays I reference below are for cash game formats (e.g. 50/50, H2H, double-ups). They are the players I think you absolutely must have in your cash game lineup(s) oen that day’s main slate. There is a ton of great DFS information available nowadays. However, it can also be difficult to comb through all of that information and know whom exactly to put in your lineup. After reading a lot of articles and listening to a few podcasts, you suddenly are left thinking that there are 20 guys you should be putting into your cash game lineup (“Player X is an elite play!”; “Player Y is perfect for cash games!”; “Player Z is viable in all formats!”).

My goal with this article is to actually prioritize all of those viable plays. So the first player you see listed below is who I think is the most important. The second player listed is the second most important and so on and so forth. I will usually provide 3-5 players each day. While some (or all) of the plays may seem obvious, we still want to make those plays and let our opponents be the ones to make the mistakes. Not building around this core set of players, in my opinion, is a recipe for an unprofitable slate.

Since I know a lot of DFS players only play tournaments, I also provide tournament pivots off of those Core Plays. I usually try to have the pivots be from the same position, same game, or same price range. The Core Plays will usually see some of the highest ownership on the slate, so how you mix them into your lineups for tournaments is up to your own personal tournament strategy.

IMPORTANT: I will make every effort to update this article as news breaks throughout the day until approximately one hour before rosters lock. So please check back often as I update my Core Plays. Remember, what may be a great play at 2:00 PM is not always a great play at 6:00 PM. To get my most up-to-date thoughts on the slate before lineups lock, be sure to tune into Crunch Time. Kevin Roth and I will go live thirty minutes before lineups lock, and you can watch right there in LineupHQ as you build lineups.

    Meansy,

Welcome back, excited for another great basketball season!!

Yes welcome back Meansy great to see the core plays back up!! :)
Last season the unwritten rule was don’t play centers against GS(I think). Now with a rotation of Bell, Looney and whoever else is there do you think the same rules apply? What are your thoughts on Adams tonight? Also will there be a daily premium podcast like their was in baseball that you were on sometimes? Maybe not for the two game slate but after Tuesday?

You are definitely the Bomb my good man!! :)

The “don’t play centers against GSW” thing pertains more to the fact that they go small so much, which often times means that it forces the opposing team to take their big plodding center off of the floor (especially since they are usually losing).

As for Adams (assuming he is healthy to play of course), I don’t think we really need to worry about that. He is actually pretty mobile for how massive he is, and a quick scan of game logs last year saw him play at least his average minutes per game in three of the four versus GSW (they did win by 20 in the other so perhaps it was blowout related). I obviously like him way more on DK where we have late swap, and the price is just way better too at only $5,800.

There will not be a premium podcast for basketball (that I am aware of at least), but we got you covered in a ton of different areas!

Appreciate all the love folks…pumped that the season is finally here!

If Adams is out, Is Noel a lock or will they just go small with PatPat?

Yeah I think I’d call Noel a lock if Adams is out. Much prefer him and Grant to PP

Great article and glad to have you back this year for the Core Plays. A random suggestion but you should come up with a better photo for your article (i.e. Cheeseisgood posting his headshot on Matt Carpenter body all year) than posting the photo of your Core Play everyday. I actually know a lot of people that don’t pay for the premium content because they can get it for free just by looking at what photos you guys all post on your articles on this website because everyone always posts the photo of their top player for the day.

On FD Meansy do you think the $ game strategy is to punt at a category like SG with a $3500 guy and jam in studs since low score is dropped now on most nights?

The photo is not up to me, but rest assured someone important has read your comment and will take it into consideration.

I think we should throw a curveball and just post a scrub as the picture every day. Or maybe a nice clean rotation of a new Duke guy every day. I’m all for that!

Yes, generally that is what you should be doing (specifically at the weakest position of the slate). We will talk a little about it tonight on Crunch Time I’m sure.

I wouldn’t call him a lock as we have no idea what the mins will be with he, Bell, and Looney. Great GPP play though because he has impressed the Dubs in preseason.

  • rroopinsurance

LETS GO MEANS! I ended last year ranked in the top 500 overall in NBA, ready to roll again! I understand why you believe in Paul George, as I do as well, but maybe should figure in potential blowout factor for these Dubs at home on opening night.
