If you like playoff basketball, you are going to love the next two days. The NBA Cup bracket is officially set. Eight teams are squaring off in the first round over the next two days. There’s a little extra on the line, as each player on the winning team gets a healthy $500,000 bonus. The final four will be played on Saturday; then the championship will be next Tuesday. I was somewhat skeptical about the idea of an in-season tournament, but the players and organizations have bought in. We’ve seen some tremendous games in this event. All we really want is meaningful basketball, and this addition to the season has helped in that regard.

Given the fact that there are only 2 games tonight and 2 games tomorrow night, we don’t have any teams playing in a back-to-back situation. The Magic will square off against the Bucks, while the Mavericks will take on the Thunder. Tomorrow, we’ll see the Rockets face the Warriors, and the Knicks square off against the Hawks. When it comes to important games, we typically see teams tighten their rotations. We also tend to see fewer injuries, and players who are listed as questionable give it their all to suit up.

Team Previews

Orlando Magic (at MIL)

We kick the NBA Cup off with the Magic, who will not have their full complement of players available. It’s likely going to be a quick visit to the NBA Cup for the Magic, as they are without Franz Wagner, Paolo Banchero, and Gary Harris. They also have Jonathan Isaac listed as questionable. The positives are that they have a nice matchup against the Bucks (21st in rebounding rate, 14th in defensive rating) and that a lot of minutes and usage have opened up thanks to injuries.

Tristan da Silva or Anthony Black will likely draw the spot-start, but Cole Anthony and Jalen Suggs could be the biggest beneficiaries. They should both see a major uptick in usage. If the Magic are going to keep this game competitive, they’ll need big outings from these two high-usage players. Goga Bitadze and Wendell Carter have played surprisingly well together and are both projected for minutes in the mid-20s. While he’s never an exciting click (a lot like Mike Conley), Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is a good bet for 30+ minutes at a cheap price point.
