NBA DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel Expert Survey for Monday, January 222
Who is your top contrarian play (when considering price, matchup, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?
Notorious: Joel Embiid – It’s actually fairly easy to fit him into lineups tonight, given the amount of value that we have on the slate. However, most will see a 14-point spread against the Spurs and look elsewhere. If San Antonio can give us a little pushback, this could be a smash spot for Embiid. It’s rare when he doesn’t put up 50+ fantasy points, and he has topped 65 fantasy points in 11 of his last 19 games. The Spurs are one of the best matchups possible, as they are 3rd in pace, 27th in rebounding rate, and 25th in defensive rating.
squirrelpatrol: Giannis Antetokoumpo – Giannis leads all NBA players in points in the paint by a wide margin, scoring 20.9 points in the paint, 3.8 points per game more than the next-best player, Zion Williamson. Detroit allows the 4th-most points in the paint per game. While this could be too much of a mismatch – Milwaukee is a 12.5-point favorite. If Detroit can keep this within reach, then Giannis could post a need-to-have-it game at low ownership.
eys819: Damian Lillard – This feels a bit like chasing with Dame dropping 45 real-life points on this same Pistons team over the weekend, but the matchup is too good to ignore at his pOWN%. Detroit ranks 6th in pace and dead last in defensive rating. They have also allowed the 3rd-highest 3P% to opponents this season. Lillard made 5-of-11 3-pointers last game and could be in for another big game if they are falling again.
TastefulTides: Jayson Tatum – A very close spread with the second-highest game total on the board; I am going to have an interest in large-field GPPs. The Celtics were short-handed last night and had to play a fairly close game against the Rockets. Jaylen Brown recorded a triple-double, but I think tonight will be Tatum’s turn for a big night. The Mavs struggle against wings and are a bottom-10 defense overall. The Mavs also play at the 9th-fastest pace in the league. It wouldn’t shock me to see the Celtics rest someone like Porzingis in this matchup, which would only help Tatum.
