NBA DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel Expert Survey for Wednesday, January 17
Who is your top contrarian play (when considering price, matchup, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?
Notorious: Donovan Mitchell – Nobody ever seems to play him in DFS, even though he has scored at least 53 fantasy points in 4 of his last 7 games. With Evan Mobley and Darius Garland off the floor this season, Mitchell has averaged 1.41 DK / 1.39 FD points per minute with a usage rate of 33%. His role could be even bigger tonight if Caris LeVert is unable to suit up. He draws a nice matchup against the Bucks, who are 5th in pace and 19th in defensive rating this season.
squirrelpatrol: Payton Pritchard – The Spurs have given up the 5th-most points per game in the NBA this season, and the Celtics are 16-point favorites at. Also, Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis, and Derrick White are all listed as questionable. Pritchard may get increased playing time no matter what the final injury status is, and he has put up over 28 DK points (25 FD points) in 3 of his last 5 games.
headChopper: Anthony Davis – The early ownership projections don’t match the production that I think we will get out of Davis. It’s a good matchup on the interior against a Mavericks team that has had a banged-up frontcourt. LeBron James is questionable again, and while he likely plays, there will be a day when he actually sits. If that comes after lock, then you will get AD at massively reduced ownership.
Stevietpfl: Cam Whitmore – We’re still waiting on some injury news, but for an 8-game slate, we’re lacking some contrarian value options. The Magic value plays are going to be chalky, and while I like them, I’m looking to get somewhat different when playing some of the other chalk. Whitmore has been more aggressive recently and should continue to play 20+ minutes with Tari Eason out. He has scored at least 25 fantasy points in 3 of his last 4 games and has taken double-digit shot attempts in those games.
