On Wednesday evening, the Golden State Warriors will travel to the Vivint Arena to battle the Utah Jazz in a matchup between two of the best teams in the Western Conference. However, both of these rosters are currently dealing with some missing pieces, which has taken some of the luster out of this national television showdown. Golden State will be without Nemanja Bjelica, Draymond Green, Andre Iguodala, and Klay Thompson. Kevon Looney’s status for tonight is still uncertain. The Jazz have ruled out Rudy Gobert, and have Rudy Gay listed as queestionable. Oddsmakers are anticipating a tightly-contested affair between these two injury-plagued teams tonight, pricing the Jazz as 1.5-point home favorites on the spread at online sportsbooks.
Golden State Warriors
Entering play, the Warriors own the second best record in the entire NBA and have won nine consecutive contests. In that span, Golden State has defeated notable opponents, such as the Utah Jazz, Dallas Mavericks, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Brooklyn Nets. The Dubs have easily handled lackluster opponents during this stretch as well, defeating the Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings, and Oklahoma City Thunder each by double-digits.
Per Cleaning the Glass, when Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, and Andre Iguodala are off of the court this season, Golden State ranks in the 67th percentile in offensive efficiency and the 56th percentile in defensive efficiency. Thus, even without a few of their key pieces, Golden State remains an above average roster.
Utah Jazz
The same cannot be said for the Jazz. Per Cleaning the Glass, when Gobert has been off of the floor this season, Utah ranks in only the 19th percentile in defensive efficiency, allowing 115.1 points per 100 possessions. Though Utah enters play on a three-game win streak, it is worth noting that all wins are not created equal. Utah’s last three wins have come against a Nikola Jokic-less Denver Nuggets team, the Brooklyn Nets, who were missing Kevin Durant and James Harden, and the New York Knicks.
Picks and Prediction
On January 1st, Golden State went to Vivint Arena and defeated the Jazz 123-116, despite missing Draymond Green and still having no Klay Thompson in the lineup. On January 23rd, the Warriors defended home court against the Jazz, emerging victorious by a final score of 94-92, despite Stephen Curry shooting 1-for-13 from beyond the arc. In this matchup, the Jazz are without Rudy Gobert. If Curry has a somewhat respectable shooting night from the floor, it is hard to imagine Golden State losing this game. The wrong team appears to be favored. Take advantage of the opportunity.
- Pick: Golden State Warriors ML (+100)
Warriors vs. Jazz Props
If looking to attack the player prop market in this one instead of trusting Golden State on the road, there is value to be found on a couple of players. Here are two of my favorite NBA props at Underdog Fantasy for today.
Andrew Wiggins o17.5 points (+100)
The first two times these teams met, Andrew Wiggins totaled 25 points on 9-for-19 shooting from the floor. In the rematch, Wiggins had only 14 points on a night in which he shot 6-for-17 from the field and 1-for-5 from deep. Tonight, bettors should once again expect Wiggins to have plenty of volume. If he has an efficient shooting night, he should be able to cash the over in this spot.
Donovan Mitchell o25.5 points (-110)
Simply, Donovan Mitchell has been unguardable since returning to the floor. In two games, he has posted 29.5 points per contest on an efficient 58.3 percent from the field and 47.1 percent from beyond the arc. Utah will once again be without Rudy Gobert in this one, which puts more of the offensive burden on Mitchell. Expect another big night from him as he tries to will the Jazz to victory.
