NBA Player Props Today – Saturday, October 28

Mitchell Over/Under 31.5 Points

Through two games this season, Donovan Mitchell is averaging 35 points on 54.2% shooting from the floor. He played 36 minutes in the team’s season opener and 42 minutes last night in a loss to the Thunder. Simply, none of these numbers are sustainable. Last year, Mitchell averaged a career-high 35.8 minutes per game and shot a career-best 48.4% from the field, and it still only translated to 28.3 points per game. This market number is understandably high against a Pacers team that ranked 26th in defensive efficiency last season, but it’s likely too high for Mitchell to hit the over this evening, especially playing on the latter half of a back-to-back set.

Editor’s Note: Mitchell has officially been listed as questionable for tonight’s game.

LaVine Over/Under 22.5 Points

The Pistons have only played two games so far this season, but the early returns suggest that they are much improved on the defensive end of the floor compared to last season. Only the Trail Blazers, Rockets, and Spurs had a worse defensive efficiency than the Pistons during the 2022-23 campaign. Only the Raptors, Magic, Timberwolves, and Suns have a better defensive efficiency than the Pistons to begin the 2023-24 campaign. Though Detroit is certainly likely to regress from the top five in this metric, there appears to be some legitimacy to their perimeter defense, as they are holding their opponents to a combined 15-for-50 from beyond the arc in two road games. Zach LaVine has been tremendously inefficient with his shot to begin the new season, shooting only 23.3% from the floor. He played 38 minutes last night but managed only 8 points. On the second leg of a back-to-back, it would not be surprising to see Chicago be careful with his minutes, which would only make it more difficult for him to hit the over in this spot.

Cunningham More/Less Than 20.5 Points

Cade Cunningham averaged 17.4 points per game in 64 games as a rookie and then increased his scoring to 19.9 points per game in 12 contests in his second season before a season-ending injury. On opening night, Cunnigham had 30 points on 27 shot attempts in 36 minutes of action. He got himself into foul trouble yesterday against the Hornets, which limited him to only 24 minutes. Still, he took 13 shot attempts. Notably, Cunningham is shooting 42.9% from beyond the arc so far this season, which is significantly better than his career numbers to date. Though he is unlikely to finish the season north of 40% from downtown, even 33% would likely be enough to help him average more than 20 points per game. He played the fewest minutes of any Detroit starter yesterday, meaning he will have the freshest legs of anyone in the starting unit on Saturday. Do not be surprised if he has a big night.
