NBA Shootaround Review: Wednesday, February 3rd

The Grinder review series will provide the reader with a breakdown of the exposures of “top of the leaderboard” players, the top single-entry lineup, and a comparison between all single entry lineups and professionals for Wednesday slate GPPs.

This week we looked at the $350k Wednesday Shootaround [$50k to 1st!] on DraftKings with a buy-in of $20.

Multi-Entry Grinder of the Game

aejones displayed this week that it does not take the maximum limit of 200 entries to take down a top place finish (7th). With only five entries, he spread out his exposure thin across a wide variety of players as seen below:

He was able to build a foundation with strong stud players in John Wall, Russell Westbrook, Stephen Curry, DeMarcus Cousins, Andre Drummond due to a significant number of value plays seeing higher than average minutes: Jeremy Lin, E’Twaun Moore, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Jordan Hill, Taj Gibson, and Gorgui Dieng. From there, he filled out his rosters with mid-salary players who showed tremendous upside in plus matchups.

Single-Entry Winner of the Game

Jimpie was able to capitalize on the Jimmy Butler news by playing Derrick Rose and E’Twaun Moore, picking value in MKG, and solidifying the lineup with studs Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, and Derrick Favors. A adequate performance from Omer Asik and a nice payout of the Popovich-roulette spin in David West rounded out his second place lineup:

Single-Entry vs. aejones

Out of 19239 entries in the Sharpshooter, 5087 of those entries were entered courtesy of players using a single bullet. The table below compares the exposures of those single entries to the exposures of aejones and a handful of top professional picked off of RotoGrinders’ leaderboard:

The single-entry players seemed more susceptible in chasing points, taking Klay Thompson, Gordon Hayward, and Rudy Gay (despite Cousins playing) at a higher rate than the entire field and the pros. As they were late pulling out Gay, they also started Demarcus Cousins at a lower clip and failed to see the potential of Kent Bazemore or Derrick Favors in juicy matchups and at lower than average salaries.
