NFL DFS WR/CB Matchups: Week 12

Wide receiver cornerback matchups are hardly the gospel for daily fantasy sports on DraftKings, FanDuel, and Yahoo. Every situation is different and they haven’t always been used optimally over the years. That said, there are still situations on the extremes where we may want to target (or avoid) a player based on their direct opposition on defense. Each week we create a WR vs. CB Matchup Chart to help us bring extreme matchups to the surface. We will now dive deep into the matchups for daily fantasy football and see who we will need to consider adjusting our projections and projected ownership for in this upcoming slate.

NFL DFS WR vs. CB Matchups for Week 12

D.J. Moore

d-j-moore-800x480

Likely CB: Kris Boyd
WR Rating: 68.60
CB Rating: 52.83
CB Yards Per Route Allowed: 0.95
CB QB Rating Allowed: 106.42

Moore gets the benefit of both a great macro and micro matchup. Not only have the Vikings allowed the third most fantasy points this season to opposing wide receivers, but Moore logs one of the best (THE best if Thielen is out this week) WR/CB matchups in our chart for Week 12.

Moore is now going on two straight weeks of games with 100+ air yards. His 130 in Week 11 were the seventh most for the week, as were his 114 in Week 10. In that Lions game last week, he caught seven of his 11 targets for 127 yards. He got 24.8 DraftKings points at just $5,600, and he didn’t even score a touchdown.

It’s hard not to like him this week again in such a great matchup. If you are jamming Dalvin Cook into your lineups (and Justin Jefferson, especially if Thielen is out), Moore makes a ton of sense as a bring-back.

Jarvis Landry

Likely CB: Josiah Scott
WR Rating: 60.95
CB Rating: 45.40
CB Yards Per Route Allowed: 2.67
CB QB Rating Allowed: 100

The Jaguars secondary is the walking wounded heading into Week 12, which leaves Josiah Scott as the likely cover-man against Landry.

The rookie cornerback has only appeared in two games for the Jaguars, but the early returns are, shall we say, not promising? Scott has the third lowest CB Rating on the slate. He allows 2.67 yards per route run. To put that into perspective, the second highest on the slate is LeShaun Sims at 1.84.

We’ll see if any of these numbers improve as the sample size grows larger. The Jaguars as a whole have been awful against the pass as it is anyways. They rank 30th in Pass Defense DVOA while also allowing the eighth most fantasy points to opposing wide receivers.

For Landry to hit it big for fantasy purposes though, there are some troubling trends that need to get reversed. On the season, the Browns offense is first in the league in Rush% (50.33%) and dead last in Pass% (49.67%). And after seeing 11 targets in the first game without Beckham (Week 8), he has seen just five (Week 10) and two (Week 11) in the past couple games.

Considering the Jaguars are starting Mike Glennon this weekend, it is hard to imagine Landry seeing the ball a ton this weekend. Who knows though, as crazier things have happened. I highly doubt many DFS players roster him too, as an early run of Projected Ownership has him at just 6.9%.

Robby Anderson

Likely CB: Chris Jones
WR Rating: 64.62
CB Rating: 52.97
CB Yards Per Route Allowed: 0.73
CB QB Rating Allowed: 100.16

We already mentioned one Panthers wide receiver, and Anderson makes it so that the Panthers have two of the top five highest Matchup Ratings on the slate. If Thielen and Julio both sit out Week 12, then these guys will make up two of the top three!

Per the data in our Matchup Chart, Anderson’s opposition (Chris Jones) grades out almost exact same as Moore’s opposition. Their respective CB Ratings are just hundredths of a point apart. And since Moore (68.60) has a slightly higher WR Rating than Anderson (64.62), Moore (15.77) gets the slight nod in Matchup Rating compared to Anderson (64.62).

It is pretty clear though that both of these guys make for great options, and we already discussed up above how friendly this Vikings defense as a whole has been to opposing wide receivers. It is worth noting on FanDuel that Anderson is $900 cheaper than Moore, which certainly goes a long way if you are wanting to get an expensive running back in your lineup who just so happens to be on the other side of this game (Dalvin Cook is $11,000 on FanDuel).
