Slate Overview
“One of these things is not like the other. One of these things does not belong.”
The Avalanche are that thing, and they leap off the page with their 4.5 implied team total. Honestly, it’s enough that I’m considering taking off the slate, which would be the first time I’ve done so all season where I’ve also written this article. I don’t have a strong conviction on exactly how to handle the Avalanche, and also don’t have any major leans on the secondary options. I know this might not be want you want to here from the person writing the article, but trying to keep it as real as possible.
The Golden Knights had a solid grasp on what should be the second spot, with the Maple Leafs just trailing them. Then, it’s a mass of teams with very few ways to distinguish between them. The Blackhawks are the only true stay-away spot with an abysmal 2.0 implied team total.
Injuries seems pretty straight forward with the exception of Jack Eichel, who is a game-time decision tonight. I’d be a little surprised if he played, but it does feel pretty close to 50/50. If he does play, the matchup is appealing, although the $8,000 price tag is a little tough to swallow.
Top Skaters
Nathan MacKinnon
DraftKings $10,500
Let’s just talk about it right off the bat. Nathan MacKinnon is not only the best play of the slate, but he is one of the best plays of the season. He’s at home, where he is always especially deadly, and he faces one of the best possible matchups in the visiting Blackhawks. Just last week, these two teams met, and the Avalanche won easily in a 5-0 route. He has points in all 29 home games this season, and I fully expect him to extend that with another multi-point effort.
There are two potential negatives, which I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out. First is the ownership. Despite the price, he might see levels of ownership we haven’t seen on a 6-game slate. Last is the potential of a blowout where his services aren’t really required, and the other lines happen to do all of the damage. This doesn’t feel very likely, but I did want to point it out.
