Slate Overview

Last night was a perfect example of how volatile NHL DFS can be. The Devils were -470 favorites at the time of puck drop and ended up getting waxed 6-3. The Sharks were outshot 18-48, but still managed to score six times. We don’t have any favorites of that degree tonight with just the Avalanche and Hurricanes checking in at -200 or better. The game of the night is probably the Bruins vs. Maple Leafs, although it’s not quite as appealing for fantasy. Nothing stands out in the over/under category either with all nine games at either 6.0 or 6.5 without a ton of juice in either direction. Due to the other (more popular) sports in action, the contest sizes are pretty small for such a large slate. I’m not sure what the demand will be, but I’d reserve your entries sooner than later to make sure they don’t fill.

Top Skaters

Nathan MacKinnon
DraftKings $9,600

Due to their respective matchups, Nathan MacKinnon is the clear number one option on the slate. Whereas Matthews and Pastrnak match up against each other, MacKinnon has the pleasure of facing the Ducks. These same Ducks that have lost eight straight and have allowed eight goals twice during that span, one of which came against the Avalanche. Nathan MacKinnon has been good this year. I said good, not great, which sounds silly for a player who has 29 points in 22 games. He ranks ninth in points, which is lower than most would have expected. The assists have been there, but the goals haven’t been. Instead, the goals have been going to Nichushkin, Rantanen, and Johansen. Still, MacKinnon is too much of a volume shooter not to start finding the net more frequently. He’s shooting 7% this season compared to his career average of 10%+. What better way to get things rolling than a matchup with Anaheim.
