Today’s Games
Slate Overview
Last night was a 4-game slate and $20,000 to first, $80,000 in total prizes in the big contest. Tonight, when there are 11 games? It’s a $15,000 to first, $67,000 total prize pool. Make it make sense. I’m assuming this had to do with the NBA schedule, but I don’t play NBA DFS. Anyways, the contests aren’t great, but we will persevere. The slate itself is pretty tasty, with an abundance of options to choose from.
There’s a quartet of teams at the top with the Senators (gap), Maple Leafs, Canucks, and Oilers all with 3.9+ implied team totals. There are a bunch of teams that make up the tier below them, with Montreal and Nashville likely coming in as the two with the highest ownership.
There are a few ancillary players questionable for tonight, but no one whose status greatly impacts the slate. The biggest news is Morgan Rielly pending suspension, which opens up valuable minutes on the top power play (see below). As always, follow along in the NHL Discord channel for any news. Let’s break it down.
Top Skaters
Connor McDavid
DraftKings $9,400
I think Auston Matthews will potentially be the highest-owned player on the slate. I like him just fine, but if there’s an ownership discount to be had with McDavid, that’s extremely appealing to me. All season, McDavid’s home/road splits have been the most extreme we’ve seen in a long time. To simplify things, I’ll just use DraftKings points as the standard since that’s ultimately what we care about most. McDavid averages 22 points at home versus just 12 on the road. We’re now at a 46-game sample size for the season. I understand if you think it’s still noisy, but I do buy into it, especially given the ability for home teams to get a second chance and dictate matchups.
In his only other appearance against the Red Wings this season, he had seven shots on goal and found the back of the net. A similar outing could be in the cards tonight. Given the matchup and production, he should really be priced at $10,000 with MacKinnon and Matthews.
