Slate Overview
Last night’s slate was a wild one, with the VGK-NJD game exploding and breaking the slate while the Kings lost in a shootout as huge favorites. As for the VGK-NJ game, that’s always a possibility, and while game-stacking doesn’t have quite the same level of correlation in other sports, it can happen in hockey, where a game goes off the rails.
Yesterday’s Slate Summary was one of my biggest whiffs in recent memory, so I apologize if you used it heavily in your lineup-making process. Hopefully, we’ll rebound with a solid showing tonight.
Tonight’s slate is actually eerily similar to last night’s, except that it’s got a few extra games to choose from. But there are once again two standout teams in the Oilers and the Rangers. As last night proved with the Canucks and Kings, in hockey, the favorites are anything but a lock and fadeable (in tournaments) for the bravest of hearts.
From a contest standpoint, I’m not sure why DK has a smaller $444 (both to first and the overall prize pool) than yesterday’s smaller slate… I was impressed by yesterday’s and equally unimpressed today. There’s also a $432 Live Final Q, which I’ll probably sit out but might get antsy and enter at the last minute if I love my lineup.
Let’s do that hockey.
Top Skaters
Artemi Panarin
DraftKings $8,900
Artemi Panarin has cooled off lately and is having one of his worst stretches of the season. And by rough stretch, I mean he “only” has 4 points in his last 6 games. That just goes to show how elite he has been to start the year. He has 62 points in 46 games. Unlike some other stars, his home/road splits are completely neutral. I have plenty of thoughts as to why, but I’ll save that for another day.
The matchup with the Sharks is always going to be a good one, but facing them on the second of a back-to-back is just the cherry on top. In his only other appearance against the Sharks this year, Panarin did alright. And by alright, I mean a hat trick and an assist, good for 43 fantasy points. The Sharks are more competent now than they were then, so I don’t think we’ll see quite the same output, but another multi-point performance seems like a good bet.
