Super Bowl Sunday is always one of my favorite sports days of the year. While the Super Bowl didn’t hold up its end of the bargain, the Waste Management Open picked up the slack. That was one of the most intriguing rounds of golf I have ever watched. The final group of Rickie Fowler, Matt Kuchar, and Justin Thomas finished a combined eight-over par on Sunday. Fowler had a huge lead heading into the par four 11th where he chipped his third over the green into the water. He then took a drop, was scouting out the green, and the ball rolled into the water again. Whether or not you agree with the penalty (I do not), he deserved it given the way the rules are written. He then bogeyed another hole and looked all but out of it. After Branden Grace took the lead, he hit his drive the only spot on the 17th hole that could hurt him — right into the water. Fowler birdied two of his last four holes to finally get the much-deserved win in Phoenix.

This week the PGA Tour heads back to California for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. We have another 54-hole cut on our hands and another week with three courses in rotation. Even though there are 156 golfers in the field, only the top 60 and ties will make the cut and play the final round. If you love watching slow golf on television that shows more celebrity shots than those of the leaders, this tournament is for you. While it’s not my favorite event on tour, I do love the host course. Speaking of Pebble Beach Golf Links, it will host the U.S. Open in June. There are rumors that preparations for the U.S. Open are already underway and that the rough might be a little thicker than it typically is for the Pro-Am event.

While most of our focus should be on Pebble Beach since it will host two of the four rounds and since it’s the only course with ShotLink data, we will quickly recap all three courses:

Pebble Beach Golf Links: This course is a Par 72 that measures 6,816 yards. It has some of the smallest greens on tour that feature tricky poa annua grass. In terms of difficulty over the last three years, it has ranked 16th, 26th, and 16th on tour.

Spyglass Hill Golf Club: This course is a Par 72 that measures 6,960 yards. It has smaller than average greens that feature tricky poa annua grass. In terms of difficulty over the last three years, it has ranked 15th, 20th, and 22nd on tour.

Monterey Peninsula Country Club: This course is a Par 71 that measures 6,958 yards. It has large poa annua greens. In terms of difficulty over the last three years, it has ranked 25th, 19th, and 3th on tour.

All three courses feature at least three par fives and measure less than 7,000 yards. This is not an event where bombers have a big advantage, as most will be forced to club down off the tee on many of the holes. This is a second-shot event that typically turns into a wedge and putting contest (no wonder why Brandt Snedeker and Jordan Spieth have played so well here). I will be focusing on strong iron play, par five scoring, par four scoring, and putting on poa grass. I will also be giving a bigger weight to course history, as the same golfers tend to play well here each and every year.

Cut Rule: Top 60 and ties move on after the first three rounds.

Recent Winners of this Event: Ted Potter Jr. (2018), Jordan Spieth (2017), Vaughn Taylor (2016), Brandt Snedeker (2015), Jimmy Walker (2014)
