PGA First Look: Corales Championship / WGC-Dell Match Play
Corales Championship Preview
We’ll start with the alternate event that is being held in Punta Cana, which is located in the southeastern part of the Dominican Republic. With most of the world’s elite teeing it up in Austin, this is one of the weakest fields that we have seen all season.
Corales Golf Club is a Par 72 that measures 7,670 yards. It is a beautiful course, but one that is fairly benign when there isn’t much wind. The last three winners here have all posted scores of at least 18-under par. There are four par fives to feast on and these are some of the widest fairways that golfers will see all season. We can look at this in one of two ways — either it gives an edge to the bombers since the fairways are wide or we can give an edge to the good iron players since all golfers will be playing from the fairways. Either way, I see this as a ball striker’s course.
The fairways and greens here are both made of paspalum grass, which isn’t seen too often on the PGA Tour. With wind being the main defense of the course, we should monitor the forecast as we head into lineup lock. As it stands now, Thursday looks to be the windiest of the four days. If it looks like there will be an edge to the morning wave, don’t hesitate to stack that tee time wave. As for the type of golfer that I’m looking for, I want strong ball strikers that make a lot of birdies. An even round here will put you well behind the pack.
Cut Rule: Top 70 and ties move on after the first two rounds. The MDF rule is in effect if more than 78 golfers make the initial cut.
Recent Winners of this Event:Brice Garnett (2018), Nate Lashley (2017), Dominic Bozzelli (2016)

WGC-Dell Match Play Preview
Before we get into the course, let’s talk a little strategy for this event. There are 64 golfers in the field and they are divided into 16 different pods. It will be round robin the first two days with golfers in each pod squaring off against each other. The winner of each pod will advance to the round of 16. From there, it is a single elimination bracket style tournament. Our goal from a DFS perspective, we want all six of our golfers to have a chance to advance to the elite eight. In other words, we should try to avoid taking two golfers from the same pod and try to avoid taking too many from the same quadrant.
Austin Country Club is a Pete Dye design. It’s a short Par 71 that measures only 7,108 yards. Like most Dye designs, you can’t overpower this course off the tee. While we’ve seen big hitters win here in the past, it’s more of a second shot course that requires creativity at times. This is a tree-lined course with many risk/reward type of golf shots that really play into the match play event. While I will certainly be looking at statistics this week, we have an added element of strategy with the pods. Some look a lot tougher than others on paper. I will actually be attending this event, so if anyone is going and sees me there, come up and introduce yourself and we can talk some DFS.

Sports Betting Card
We were so close to a big week. Jason Kokrak just had to get up and down on 18 from right in front of the green to force a playoff with Paul Casey. Alas, he decided to putt through the fringe and was unable to convert his eight-footer for par. Luckily, we also had Kokrak as a top five bet, which paid out eight to one. We bet a total of 10 units and got eight back. Breakeven weeks are always acceptable in golf punting.
