Pebble Beach is one of my favorite courses on tour, but the Pebble Beach Pro-Am is one of my least favorite tournaments. The longer I play DFS golf, the more I dislike the three-course rotation where we only have ShotLink data for one of the courses. The pro-am format is fine, but the celebrities get way too much television time. Funny enough, last week was my most profitable of the last four months. In the end, Phil Mickelson staged a big comeback on Sunday to beat Paul Casey by three strokes. Many are already clamoring for a Mickelson win at Pebble for the U.S. Open, but let’s not get carried away. By the time June rolls around, it will be a completely different course.
The PGA Tour stays in California this week for the Genesis Open. We have an incredibly stacked field on hand, as 14 of the top 20 golfers in the world are set to tee it up at Riviera Country Club. This is one of the best tests of golf on tour, as the course will test all aspects of a golfer’s game. The course is a Par 71 that measures 7,322 yards. It features three par fives that are reachable by most of the field if you find the fairway off the tee. The length of the course is a bit deceiving, as most of it comes on the par fours. Six of them measure between 450-500 yards.
The course features tree-lined kikuyugrass fairways and a number of dog legs that create tricky approach shots. Over the years, driving accuracy at this event is only 53% compared to the PGA Tour average of 61%. The greens are small and made of a bentgrass/poa mix. Over the years, greens in regulation at this event is only 57% compared to the PGA Tour average of 66%. With hard to hit fairways and greens, it’s no surprise that the winning score is typically between eight and 12 under par.
Here is the dispersion of approach shots hit at Riviera in past events:
- 75-100 — 5%
- 100-125 — 6%
- 125-150 — 12%
- 150-175 — 27%
- 175-200 — 25%
- 200+ — 25%
As you can see, there won’t be very many wedges into these greens. Long iron play will be critical, both to make the cut and to compete. We’ve seen a number of ball strikers fare well here in the past, but you can’t bleed strokes on and around the greens. We want to target golfers with very few weaknesses in their games. As far as the weather, it has rained quite a bit in the area and the forecast is calling for rain on both Tuesday and Wednesday. We should see better scoring conditions than last year’s firm and fast test.
Cut Rule: Top 70 and ties move on after the first two rounds. The MDF rule is in effect if more than 78 golfers make the initial cut.
