PGA Projected Ownership: DraftKings Milly Maker Edition

Article Image

Hello there. My name is Trae Schwabe and I’m excited to be working with the RotoGrinders team focusing on PGA Ownership % projections (pOwn%) for selected DraftKings GPPs.

This weekly PGA article will differ from most. You won’t find a lot of Strokes Gained statistics, Course History or Driving/Distance Accuracy discussion here. We will let more qualified and experienced folks like Justin, Bryan, Gibbathy and Josh handle that stuff.

Our focus is not directly on the PGA players and the courses they are playing on. We focus on the DFS player community and how they are consuming information leading towards their decision-making process. The factors (we have identified 15 so far) influencing DFS Golf decision-making are always in flux and we will do our best to tweak our evolving model/process accordingly. Our team is just scratching the surface with DFS Golf pOwn% and we still have a “Wild West-era” feeling about the DFS Golf landscape.

We analyze topics such as:

Profiling Golf DFS player types (for example: max entry folks, mid-volume contrarians, single entries, etc.) and estimating their populations and tendencies in targeted DFS venues.

Digging deeper into cognitive biases and how they affect the Golf DFS decision-making process. Yes, recency bias is still the undisputed champ but we have several other favorites.

Analyzing the Golf DFS tout landscape and how it influences DFS players. In a sport with few generally accepted predictive stats, we believe that the touts influence DFS Golf more than any other sport.

We attempt to gauge each tout’s influence considering stuff like: viewership volume, prediction accuracy, production quality (for example: studio vs SiriusXM vs podcast), etc. This weekly article will share and discuss a few pOwn% values in different salary ranges of targeted GPPs.

Editor’s Note: In the near future, subscribers to DraftKings PGA Premium content will have access to all current week and historical pOwn% data. Updates will be made throughout the week due to injury news, tout activity, odds/line movement, weather/tee-times, etc. But for this week, focusing on the $33 DK Milly Maker, everyone has access to everything. Enjoy!

This Week’s Tweaks:

It’s the last Major of the season and everyone should be bringing their A-game for the DraftKings $33 Milly Maker. The max entry folks (we expect the MEF population to grow again this week) want some ROI from their efforts. The single entries and other low volume folks have one last Milly dream before NFL arrives.

With the last Major just two weeks ago and minimal DK salary shake-ups, we feel like we have a decent read on a lot of decision-making tendencies. Weather (tee-time draws) appears to be a factor again with thunderstorms and other showers possible all four days. Course history thought might be minimized. The balanced approach worked so well at The Open, we expect more Big 4 fading (except DJ) this week. We have a new Beefy PGA DFS Twitter champ. The DFS tout material will be flowing and the people will be consuming at higher rates this week.

Upper Tier Curiosities ($10K +):

Jordan Spieth (12% and falling): Spieth is clinging to the last rung of the Big 4 ladder and now Henrik is breathing down his neck. Is it a big 5 now? Spieth’s boring T30 finish at The Open at a 14.15% actual ownership won’t inspire many DFS Milly wannabes. Henrik and others will cause more Spieth pOwn% erosion this week.

Phil Mickelson (15% and falling): Phil played so well last week and got SO MUCH AIR TIME. An EPIC performance by both Phil and Henrik leads us to an interesting pOwn% situation this week. Ultimately, Phil’s pOwn% should eclipse at least one of the Big 4 but fall well short of DJ and Stenson. Maybe it’s his age. Maybe it’s his “corporate”, P.C. attitude. Maybe it’s his inconsistency (2016 cuts at U.S. Open, The Players, The Masters). Maybe it’s because his sponsor can’t outfit him with a hat that fits. DFS players still look for reasons to go away from Phil even when they shouldn’t.

Dustin Johnson (34% and slightly rising): The body language is off the charts. The swagger, the confidence, the calmness. He’s everywhere: leaderboards, all tout venues, top of odds lists, etc. Even the casual fans know DJ is kicking ass right now. Like Day in 2015, DJ is charging into the PGA and most DFS players will feel “queasy” by not rostering him in the Milly Maker. DK is sticking with the $33 entry fee, driving down the average Milly Maker DFS player’s entries and probably their risk tolerance levels regarding core player targets. Not even Contrarian Nation can stop DJ from eclipsing 30% ownership this week.

Henrik Stenson (23% and falling): He did it! The first Swede to win a major, firing an incredible R4 63 of The Open in an epic duel versus one of the most recognizable golf brands around (corporate Phil and his inefficient, oversized KPMG hat). You can cross Henrik off the “Best Players without a Major” list. But it’s been two weeks now and some guy named Vegas just won in Ontario. We expect Henrik’s “Honeymoon Period” to end quicker than most for one big reason: he’s boring. Come on Henrik, put that 3-Wood away and step up to a Driver more often like DJ! We suspect most Max Entry Folks (MEFs) are already off the bandwagon as well as the entire Contrarian Nation. But there is a lot of new blood in the Milly Maker and lots of low-volume entry demand for The Open champ.

Middle Tier Intrigues ($8K – $10K):

Bubba Watson (14% and rising): Unlike Phil, the DFS community looks for reasons to play Bubba. Even with the jump in DK salary people think about the Upside, the quirky genius, the perceived low Own%, his charity work. He’s just likable. Initial odds? CHECK! Decent finish at The Open? CHECK! Early bird tout buzz? CHECK! Is he still “Sneaky”? YES! CHECK!

Matt Kuchar (19%): Kuchar broke our “Tout-Buzz” model during The Open week and he continued to demand high ownership in the RBC Canadian Open. Let’s take another look at the revised “Best Golfer without a Major” list. Wow, we’ve crossed three off the list in 2016. Who’s next? Snedeker? Garcia? Westwood? Kuch? The touts are still framing compelling Kuchar arguments helping those looking for quick and easy confirmation. Throw some good ol’ high-octane Recency Bias (non-Majors only) fuel to the Kuchar fire and we believe Kuchar will again be a Milly Maker ownership stud.

Branden Grace (17% and falling): He fell flat on his face at Royal Troon, but DK responds with an enticing decrease in DK salary this week for Grace (down $1.7K to $8K). Early odds are sharp. Nobody else in the $8K range (except maybe P. Reed) really grabs you.

Lower Tier Delights ($6.5K – $8K):

Brooks Koepka (7%): Really nice odds (70/1) for this price range. But thousands of DFS players remember the Bridgestone WD at 27.5% Ownership. Then the WD from The Open. Nothing is scarier than lingering injuries and WD whispers. It could be worse, it could be a wrist or back injury I guess. They say he’s healthy. But the Bridgestone. Then The Open. Vegas thinks he’s okay. Do I fight alongside this guy Koepka? Most people will flight, we believe.

Brandt Snedeker (13% and rising): The RBC Canadian Open contrarian champ is quickly transforming to PGA Championship Chalk after a strong T5 finish in Ontario. He scored tons of air time at the expense of guys like Day, Kuchar and Furyk. Sneds is an early week odds/line movement star and the touts are starting to pounce.

Charl Schwartzel (22%): Charl the Chalk is back. DK decided to lower his salary by $500 after his strong T18 finish at The Open. Great opening odds for this DK salary range are initiating instant value/Cash Game/GPP Chalk. Furyk, Sneds, Cabrera-Bello will help to reduce Charl the Chalk’s pOwn% slightly, but it won’t be enough.

Cheap Dart and Scrub Shop ($5.5K – $6.5K):

Daniel Berger (4% and falling): The Koepka Bridgestone WD was painful, but the Berger Bridgestone WD just pissed us off. After he crushed so many DFS rosters, we find out Berger got to pocket a $50K check for his one shot WGC effort. DFS players try their best to be logical most times, but sometimes it’s okay to get emotional, right? TO HELL WITH BERGER! DK helps us out by sandwiching Berger between The Open stud, Tyrrell Hatton and Twitter superstar, Beef Johnston. Late Milly Maker entry, Jhonattan Vegas helps too.

Andrew Johnston (10% and falling): Opening odds are not so Beefy. The touts have been mostly ignoring Beef and when there’s discussion it’s been negative. But the 8th place finish at The Open (at just 0.53% ownership) is hard to ignore. Our model considers what we call “Player (Social) Popularity”. It is a lowly-weighted component near the bottom of the model, but it’s there affecting non-MEFs to a higher degree. And Beef Johnston completely owns this space right now. The Max Entry Folks (MEFs) will influence maybe around 16-18% of total rosters for this Milly Maker. We don’t believe the MEFs will be ordering Beef. But many others play DFS golf for different reasons. They are not as consumed by the spreadsheets, the algorithms or ROI goals. They simply do it for entertainment. Several “Player Types” just want to genuinely root for their guy via a DK roster, whether they admit it or not. For some the same reasons they won’t roster Berger, they will roster Beef Johnston.

Andy Sullivan (14%): One of the last good options below $6.5K (sorry Vijay). Sully has been solid over the last two majors. He will be a popular solution for both balanced and “stars and scrubs” approaches. DK seems to enjoy creating some chalk from time to time. Tout-support for Molinari is picking up though and DK Milly Maker late entry/Canadian Open champ, Jhonattan Vegas is providing stronger competition for Sully. We feel that most higher entry volume Milly Maker players figure “What happens in Ontario, stays in Ontario” for J. Vegas.
