PGA Projected Ownership: Travelers Championship

Trav

Jimmy Walker (2.09 pOwn%, 1.55% actual) reminded us why we love DFS golf. Most had ZERO exposure to Walker in the PGA Championship, and yet we found ourselves pulling for him (if your rosters permitted) in the end.

When your DFS NBA roster is dead, how many of us stick around and watch the last West coast game rooting for a guy like Jordan Clarkson to “break out”? How about the waning moments of a Monday Night Football game? Hey, that was a great prevent defense! Wow, awesome victory formation!!! Flipping channels, waiting for your last roster hopeful to get up to bat/on the gridiron/ get up a damn 3-point shot… What a drag!

DFS Golf has the best DFS sweats, period. Even when your rosters are dead, DFS golf helps you enjoy reality golf. I can’t say the same for the other big three sports.

Let’s take a quick look at how we did last week in the PGA Championship DK Milly Maker.

Hit it, Alice!

Dustin Johnson (33.25 pOwn%, 43.43% actual): Wow. We all knew DJ would be the highest owned, but over 43% ownership in the Milly Maker? DK’s super-soft pricing is the main culprit here, with many long-hitting value plays available for the “this is a Bomber’s course” narrative crowd. The data-driven recent form folks were all over DJ too (but also quick to discount Henrik’s spiked stats reasoning that The Open was an ‘outlier’). DJ’s line movement was flat but tout buzz was off the charts. Jason Day’s ownership collapse was the last straw pushing DJ into rarified GPP ownership air.

Sergio Garcia (21.74 pOwn%, 30.94% actual): How about that “This is the year of first-time Major winners” narrative? Sergio is #1 on most of the “Best to never win a Major” lists. The recent form/course fit stats looked great. With this the third straight tourney without good course history analysis, perhaps many were trying to cram bad SG stats into their process. Many probably just thought “Oh, to hell with it, if Henrik can do it surely Sergio can”.

Charl Schwartzel (22.82 pOwn%, 31.29% actual): Where was Contrarian Nation? Are they already scouting RGIII, Arian Foster and Donte Moncrief? Yes, Charl was WAY underpriced. When mentioned by the touts, Charl the Chalk was always perceived to be over-owned. Well, at least Charl made the cut and grinded out a T42 unlike his chalk brethren Rory, Kuchar and DJ (ouch).

Airmailing it!

Jason Day (18.22% pOwn%, 9.73% actual): Day opened as DK salary king (early DK Milly Maker release, Canadian Open results not priced in) but behind DJ and Rory in Vegas odds -strike one. Day faded a Monday report to Baltusrol, citing scheduling commitments. Then there were reports of Day’s children passing along an illness to him and wife, Ellie; initiating a trip to a nearby hospital on Tuesday night. Day decided to rest Tuesday and cram in a practical round on unfamiliar Baltusrol on Wednesday. It’s always something with Day it seems: vertigo, thumb, back strain, etc – strike two. Line movement was brutal for Day on Wednesday. DJ was flat, but Rory was going bonkers with line movement. Strike three – Jason Day is out. We had a solid Day pOwn% floor at 15%, but didn’t have the testicular fortitude to push it that far down. We figured the Day loyalists have seen him overcome adversity before and would stand by their man with a little extra contrarian-play bonus to boot…

Andrew Johnston (9.63 pOwn%, 2.99% actual): Where’s the Beef? If you recognize that slogan, you’re either into marketing or you’re a “little” older like db730 and me. We opened with 10.47% pOwn% for Beef and slid throughout the week settling at 9.63%. Beef just got hammered by the touts all week. But line movement was good on Wednesday. And the tweets kept coming. The guy is just fun. But the sharks figured “fun” is for donks. I kept waiting for an “I got your Beef right here” tweet from @BeefGolf directed to those responsible for the 97%+ rosters fading him. But the tweet was never sent. Maybe Beef Johnston wasn’t in line with the proper DFS context. Maybe he was aware of the big fade, but Beef is a classier guy than me. Oh well, it would have been fun.

Editor’s Note: In the near future, subscribers to DraftKings PGA Premium content will have access to all current week and historical pOwn% data. Updates will be made throughout the week due to injury news, tout activity, odds/line movement, weather/tee-times, etc. But for this week, focusing on the $3 DK Birdie, everyone has access to everything. Enjoy!

This Week’s Tweaks:

The 2016 Majors are over. The NFL machine is already gearing up. The tout activity will now be waning for DFS Golf, but many golf-specialist touts remain (Thank you! You guys are good, btw).

The big narratives should be: 1) Ryder Cup bubble boys 2) Olympian disinterest/travel concerns 3) Lots of first time PGA winners at the Travelers 4) Course history analysis? YES, finally!!

Hey DK, thanks for the tighter pricing this week. We don’t want Bubba or Grace at 45% GPP ownership in the Travelers.

The DK Milly Maker payout was top-heavy. Most players want to rebuild bankrolls and to create more than a handful of rosters. So we’re going to target the DK $3 Birdie this week.

Upper Tier Curiosities ($10K +):

Bubba Watson (32% and rising): Bubba has a lot going for him this week. Course horse, defending champ, Vegas morning line favorite, highest OWG ranked, weak field, Ryder Cup bubble boy narrative, etc. At first glance you might think Bubba could go full DJ and bomb right past 40% ownership in the Travelers. But hang on now. Bubba has posted some lame results in the recent Majors rush (T60-PGA, T30-TheOpen, T51-US Open). And DraftKings responds to the Milly Maker 43% owned Dustin Johnson debacle by sticking Bubba with a $12.5K price tag. Bubba is also an Olympian gearing up to represent the good ol’ USA. I get nervous just reading the Zika/crime/pollution/decaying Rio infrastructure Olympic news these days. I can’t imagine packing up and going into that mess….. Seems like a logical narrative swaying DFS players away from Bubba and other Olympians.

Brooks Koepka (27% and falling): The ankle must be feeling better. The brave souls behind the 5.5% Milly Maker ownership loved watching Koepka post a strong T4 finish at the PGA Championship while the rest of us double-face palmed. Vegas likes Koepka better than Grace, Reed and Kuchar. He’s sitting pretty with the Ryder Cup deal, and there’s no stressful travel plans upcoming. It’s getting easier and easier to get on the Koepka train. And don’t forget, there are lots and lots that hear that Koepka train whistle (27% ownership in the Bridgestone). If it wasn’t for the lingering WD memories, we could have been looking at a DJ-like ownership situation here in Koepka this week.

Middle Tier Intrigues ($8K – $10K):

Jon Rahm (20% and rising): This guy just won’t go away. The skeptics thought Rahm’s US Open was cute, and then started having problems ridiculing the former Sun Devil after the T3 Quicken Loans finish (at 19% own, $7.3K). The skeptics laughed at a T59 The Open finish, but lost more money when Rahm followed with a T2 Canadian Open. If you can’t tell by now, I was in the Rahm skeptic camp. But I’m now fighting to accept the never-ending evidence that Jon Rahm is a pretty good golfer. This paradigm battle is happening in noggins everywhere.

Louis Oosthuizen (5%): DK is trying to pump up the Oosthuizen ownership. In this weaker field, Louis is down to $9.3K salary. It’s weird seeing Louis hanging around the likes of Gary Woodland, Francesco Molinari, J.B. Holmes and Jon Rahm on the DK salary list. We have all liked these other names in the recent weeks. And we have had no problems fading Louis. What is DK trying to push on me?! Louis should start trending up in ownership after the T22 at 2.4% at the PGA. But it will probably be a very weak trend.

Lower Tier Delights ($6.5K – $8K):

Tyrrell Hatton (24% and rising sharply): Another paradigm shift challenge that is easier to make at the low $7.7K salary. Super chalk, Daniel Summerhays, is nearby at $7.6K, but we should see minimal pivot action towards Keegan Bradley ($7.6K), Kevin Streelman ($7.5K) and Shane Lowry ($7.9K). Vegas is on board with Hatton and the recent form is outstanding.

Daniel Summerhays (21%): Daniel outdueled his cousin Joe Summerhays at the PGA Championship and ended up finishing at a solo 3rd. Daniel scored some nice air time, making it easier to forget The Canadian Open cut at 24% ownership. DK keeps it low at $7.6K for this week’s chalk title contender. For your contrarians out there, if you’re still out there (DJ at GPP 43%, come on!). How about some Keegan sandwiched between Tyrrell and Daniel? There’s not much love for Keeg, he should be around 5% or less.

Cheap Dart and Scrub Shop ($5.5K – $6.5K):

Chad Campbell (11%): Campbell has some of the best odds down here and garnered good support in The Canadian Open at a higher salary.

Si Woo Kim (8%): Si Woo the one-off special!! He’s probably the last “safer” option below $6K.

Luke List (7%): List had a good T14 showing at The Canadian Open and some remember him being on top of the Leaderboard for the first two rounds. But many will remember the 77 on Saturday dropping List to 28th. Still, he is a decent (and cheap) GPP dart.

We’ll be making pOwn% updates later on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Also, look for one last update a few hours before roster lock.

Good luck this week Grinders!
