On Tuesday evening, the Philadelphia 76ers and the Utah Jazz will battle at the Vivint Arena. Philadelphia enters tonight’s action having lost four consecutive contests since Joel Embiid landed on the injury report due to health and safety protocols. Utah has only one win in their last five games, having defeated the Atlanta Hawks at home by 12 points on November 9. Oddsmakers anticipate a relatively easy win for the Jazz in this matchup, pricing Utah as 10-point home favorites on the spread.
Let’s take a closer look at Warriors vs. Nets odds and NBA betting tips for tonight’s matchup on NBA TV.
Philadelphia 76ers (+10)
The absence of Ben Simmons has not been nearly as big of a negative impact as many pundits had forecasted during the preseason. Even without Simmons, Philadelphia has the seventh-best Net Rating in the entire NBA through 14 games. This is even more impressive, considering that Embiid has missed five games, Tobias Harris has missed six contests, and Matisse Thybulle has missed five matchups.
Still, while this group has been able to perform well without Simmons, that has not been the case without Embiid—at least not on the defensive end of the floor. In Philadelphia’s last four games, they are permitting 117.0 points per 100 possessions, which ranks 28th in the NBA during that stretch. Even the return of Harris to the lineup is unlikely to solve this group’s issues when it comes to getting stops. In the last four games, Philadelphia has allowed their opponents to shoot 40.0 percent from beyond the arc. This could be especially problematic tonight against a Utah team that shoots the third-most three-point attempts per game in the entire league.
The 76ers are a talented offensive roster, even without Simmons and Embiid on the floor. Yet, strong culture can only cover up so many holes. Asking role players to contribute starter-level production in one of the toughest arenas in the NBA is a tall order.
Utah Jazz (-10)
The Jazz have been one of the best regular season teams in the NBA over the previous few seasons, but their last five games have not done much to inspire bettors to trust them tonight—even against an injury-plagued Philadelphia team playing away from home. In their last five games, Utah is allowing 114.5 points per 100 possessions, which ranks fifth-worst in the league during that stretch. The Jazz continue to be a threat to score on every possession down the floor, but an over-reliance on perimeter shooting against teams that defend the three-point line well, such as the Miami Heat and Orlando Magic—leaves this group vulnerable to surprising losses.
That being said, Philadelphia has been completely incapable of slowing down opponents from the perimeter without Embiid in the lineup. Donovan Mitchell, Bojan Bogdanovic, Jordan Clarkson, Mike Conley, and Joe Ingles are each capable of having strong showings this evening against a smaller, easily-fatigued rotation for the 76ers. Philadelphia’s best answer for Rudy Gobert on the block is Andre Drummond. However, if the Jazz are able to draw him away from the basket, rebounding becomes a serious concern for the rest of the 76ers roster. It is also doubtful that the young backcourt for Philadelphia is going to have much success slowing down Mitchell, who has been sensational this season—averaging 25.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 5.1 assists. Mitchell should be able to have an efficient performance in this one.
76ers vs. Jazz Prediction
Utah is 35-7 at home since the beginning of last season. Though many bettors have been burned by this group in recent weeks, they should not let those results scare them away from a favorable matchup tonight. The Jazz are the more talented, deeper team in tonight’s affair. Utah could threaten to turn this one into a laugher. Take the Jazz to cover the spread here.
