RotoGrinders Rankings Formula Update

The world of daily fantasy sports is constantly reinventing itself. From the types of contests to the size of prize pools, it’s pretty amazing to see just how far this industry has come.

For example, in the last few years, we have seen an exponential growth of showdown contests across all major sports. During the 2018 NFL season, Sunday night showdown slates started to gain a ton of traction. With multiple buy-in levels to participate in and a chance to win a share of $800,000 dollars, the Sunday night sweat quickly became a staple for many in the world of daily fantasy sports. Last season the interest in these contests grew dramatically and with single contest prize pools routinely over one million dollars it’s easy to see how showdown slates have become a big part of the industry.

While showdown contests are extremely exciting to participate in, it would become very frustrating from many in the industry to see a big score from one of these contests not show up in RotoGrinders rankings. The major driving force behind the idea of making a change to our rankings system is to create a product that can include both showdown and classic contest moving forward. Due to the massive amount of ties for showdown contests, adding these types of contests would simply not work under our current ranking system, where points are established by a formula that used a combination of money won and the overall finish position in that tournament.

To help remedy this problem we have removed the finish position from this formula and are now going with a formula that weights the amount of money won per event. The primary benefit of this switch is that a contest with a massive tie for first place will no longer receive points that are inflated due to finish position alone. With this new points ranking system, all point tallies from the last 365 days will be retrofitted to represent the new formula. Starting today, showdown contests will count towards rankings, however, showdown contests prior to this change will not count towards rankings.
