Searching for a Specialist: Corales Championship

This week’s host venue is the Corales Golf Club.

It’s a lengthy, resort course with extremely generous fairways and paspalum greens.

If you are new to the specialist search, here is a quick primer. The goal of this article is to look at a few key angles for the upcoming event and compare each golfer’s performance in those angles against their long-term baseline. For a golfer to get bucketed as a specialist, they must improve over their baseline in all five angles. At the bottom, I also include a table with the full-field rankings in each angle.

Reviewing last week, it was one to forget as the South Africans (Charl and Grace) both let us down and Moore also missed the cut on the number. On the flip side, it wasn’t all doom and gloom as longshot Matt Jones came through in a big way with a top-15 finish. G-Mac settled for a ho-hum finish. Not a banner week but with a top-10 rate still sitting near 25%, we need to stick with the process.

This week we look at Performance on Grainy Greens, Driver-Heavy Courses, Easy-to-Hit Fairway Courses, Long Courses, and Slow Greens.

Here we go…

Grainy Greens

As we often see in tropical climates, the course this week uses seashore paspalum grasses.

Ideally, we would have a huge datatset of performance on paspalum greens but that’s just not the case. Instead, we pair paspalum performance with it’s closest relative, bermudagrass, and we have an angle that typically performs very well.

The 10 Grainy Green Specialists:

Sam Burns (1.277 sg:grainy vs. 0.778 sg:total)
Robert Allenby (-0.385 sg:grainy vs. -0.866 sg:total)
Troy Matteson (-0.969 sg:grainy vs. -1.354 sg:total)
Shawn Stefani (1.079 sg:grainy vs. 0.738 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.427 sg:grainy vs. 0.099 sg:total)
Brice Garnett (0.919 sg:grainy vs. 0.592 sg:total)
D.J. Trahan (0.496 sg:grainy vs. 0.174 sg:total)
Sebastian Munoz (0.844 sg:grainy vs. 0.525 sg:total)
Adam Schenk (1.107 sg:grainy vs. 0.794 sg:total)
Davis Love III (0.382 sg:grainy vs. 0.075 sg:total)

Quantity: The golfers that have the most strokes gained on Grainy Greens since 2014 are Rory Sabbatini, Graeme McDowell, Harris English, Shawn Stefani, and Jhonattan Vegas.

Sungjae and Frittelli don’t have a large enough sample yet but they rank #1 and #4 when it comes to percentage of steady round recorded on grainy greens. Something to keep monitoring.

Driver-Heavy Courses

“Length is a huge advantage here. Fairways are big, holes are long, so you can just send driver.” -Seamus Power

The Top 10 Driver-Heavy Specialists:

Carlos Ortiz (1.287 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.54 sg:total)
Jason Bohn (0.612 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.097 sg:total)
Jonas Blixt (1.061 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.59 sg:total)
Peter Uihlein (1.444 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.994 sg:total)
Harris English (1.407 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.034 sg:total)
Max Homa (0.062 sg:driver-heavy vs. -0.308 sg:total)
Ricky Barnes (0.888 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.527 sg:total)
Matt Every (0.127 sg:driver-heavy vs. -0.228 sg:total)
Sangmoon Bae (0.544 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.207 sg:total)
Corey Conners (1.101 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.774 sg:total)

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained on driver-heavy courses since 2014 are Harris English, Jhonattan Vegas, Charl Schwartzel, Robert Streb, and Jonas Blixt.

When driver is highly available it typically means that the fairways are generous of the rough is not too penal. I think we get both this week at Corales.

Easy-to-Hit Fairways

When looking at fairway-hit percentage last season it went Trinity Forest then Corales then Nine Bridges.

That was with decent winds for most of the week. This time around we have calm conditions forecasted for three of the four rounds.

The Top 10 Easy-to-Hit Fairway Specialists:

Charlie Beljan (-0.649 sg:easy fairways vs. -1.323 sg:total)
Troy Matteson (-0.721 sg:easy fairways vs. -1.354 sg:total)
Chris Stroud (1.204 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.632 sg:total)
Eric Axley (0.044 sg:easy fairways vs. -0.484 sg:total)
Josh Teater (0.893 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.393 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.585 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.099 sg:total)
Tyler Duncan (0.875 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.39 sg:total)
John Merrick (0.365 sg:easy fairways vs. -0.099 sg:total)
Dicky Pride (0.09 sg:easy fairways vs. -0.356 sg:total)
Max Homa (0.11 sg:easy fairways vs. -0.308 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Easy Fairways since 2014 are Chris Stroud, David Hearn, Jhonattan Vegas, Chad Campbell, and Matt Jones.

If we look at the percentage of steady rounds recorded on easy-to-hit fairways then Denny McCarthy checks in at #1. He also finished top 5 here last year and is arriving off a top 10 at the Valspar.

Long Courses

The scorecard reads 7,670 yards this week! That is long by any standards.

There are five par 4s at 446 yards or longer. All four of the par 3s are more than 200 yards. You better bring your driver and some good mid/long-iron play.

The Top 10 Long Course Specialists:

Carlos Ortiz (1.361 sg:long vs. 0.54 sg:total)
Jonas Blixt (1.245 sg:long vs. 0.59 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.717 sg:long vs. 0.099 sg:total)
Corey Conners (1.282 sg:long vs. 0.774 sg:total)
Aaron Baddeley (1.471 sg:long vs. 0.98 sg:total)
Sam Burns (1.248 sg:long vs. 0.778 sg:total)
Troy Matteson (-0.939 sg:long vs. -1.354 sg:total)
Tom Lovelady (0.916 sg:long vs. 0.53 sg:total)
D.J. Trahan (0.509 sg:long vs. 0.174 sg:total)
Trey Mullinax (1.245 sg:long vs. 0.927 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Long Courses since 2014 are Charl Schwartzel, Aaron Baddeley, Harris English, Jhonattan Vegas, and Graeme McDowell.

Who has posted the highest percentage of steady rounds on long courses since 2014. In this field, it’s surprisingly Carlos Ortiz. He finished top 10 here in 2017 when it was still a Web.com Tour event. Consider him a lively sleeper.

Slow Greens

The target stimp at Corales Golf Club is just 11 feet which is slow by TOUR standards.

The Top 10 Slow Greens Specialists:

Troy Matteson (-0.26 sg:slow greens vs. -1.354 sg:total)
Dominic Bozzelli (1.553 sg:slow greens vs. 0.599 sg:total)
Brice Garnett (1.408 sg:slow greens vs. 0.592 sg:total)
Eric Axley (0.14 sg:slow greens vs. -0.484 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.675 sg:slow greens vs. 0.099 sg:total)
Tommy Gainey (0.021 sg:slow greens vs. -0.55 sg:total)
Davis Love III (0.585 sg:slow greens vs. 0.075 sg:total)
Wes Roach (0.592 sg:slow greens vs. 0.111 sg:total)
Peter Uihlein (1.455 sg:slow greens vs. 0.994 sg:total)
George McNeill (0.825 sg:slow greens vs. 0.516 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Slow Greens since 2014 are Hudson Swafford, Aaron Baddeley, Jhonattan Vegas, Brice Garnett, and Brian Stuard.

Slower greens are often more receptive too. The slow speeds make around-the-green play a bit easier and the more receptive nature makes them easier to land in regulation.

The Specialist

Shawn Stefani

We have a lone ranger this week as just one golfer is positive in all five angles.

shawn-stefani-800x480

The Texan sees the biggest improvement on grainy greens but he’s also very strong on long courses and courses that allow a lot of shots from the fairway.

Stefani has flashed a bit of form with top 30s in two of his last three starts. He finished top 15 here last year. It all sounds good to me.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Long-Term Skill (L52) with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Denny McCarthy
Sungjae Im
Aaron Baddeley
Adam Schenk
Joel Dahmen
Rory Sabbatini
Dylan Frittelli
Shawn Stefani
Matt Jones
Brian Stuard
Jhonattan Vegas
Joaquin Niemann
Carlos Ortiz
Fabian Gomez
Trey Mullinax
Thomas Detry
Charl Schwartzel
Roger Sloan
Kyoung-Hoon Lee
Johnson Wagner

The specialist, Stefani, checks in at #13 on the list. It’s Sungjae near the top as he’s just been so consistent since joining the TOUR this season.

The co-favorite is Jhonattan Vegas but he’s just 11th on the list above. Hard to get excited about paying up for that.

If you’re looking for a Euro Tour special then Thomas Detry looks like a good play this week and he should bring low ownership since he doesn’t have any PGA TOUR stats.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made tiny adjustments for sample sizes, but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 6 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

SIMPLE RATING looks at Long-Term Skill (L52), FORM, and SPECIALIST RATING to create a simple rating that includes course fit but doesn’t overweight it.

L52 FORM looks at performance over the last 52 weeks across the PGA TOUR, Web.com Tour, and European Tour.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
