Searching for a Specialist: Desert Classic

We have two events in the books for 2019 and it’s been a solid start for the specialist search.

After a near-win from Gary Woodland at Kapalua, Charles Howell III kept the momentum rolling with a top 10 at the Sony Open. Let’s see if we can keep the ball rolling and maybe even pick up a win or two before the TOUR leaves the West Coast in mid-February.

This week we look at Performance on Overseeded Bermuda Greens, Par 72 Courses, Short Courses, West Coast Events, and Easy Courses in general.

Here we go…

Performance on Overseeded Bermuda Greens

Her head to Cali this week which generally triggers poa annua performance but we need to hold our horses, there.

PGA WEST is so fancy they go with bermuda and then during the wintertime they overseed with rye to keep the course looking green while the bermuda goes dormant.

Here is what some of the golfers say about it,

“I love this overseeded rye, they’re just perfect. They’re great. Couldn’t expect any or want any better greens.” -Austin Cook

“The greens are a little tricky to read with the overseed, so I think that iron play is huge here, I think giving yourself as many birdie opportunities as possible is easier said than done” -Hudson Swafford

“The overseeded rough can get a little sticky and create some problems. Hitting from the fairway is key here.” -Hudson Swafford

The 10 Overseeded Bermuda Specialists:

Josh Teater (1.056 sg:overseeded vs. 0.212 sg:total)
Grayson Murray (1.425 sg:overseeded vs. 0.597 sg:total)
Sean O’Hair (1.702 sg:overseeded vs. 0.899 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.802 sg:overseeded vs. 0.034 sg:total)
Vaughn Taylor (1.705 sg:overseeded vs. 0.961 sg:total)
Brendan Steele (2.159 sg:overseeded vs. 1.445 sg:total)
Trey Mullinax (1.44 sg:overseeded vs. 0.729 sg:total)
John Huh (1.507 sg:overseeded vs. 0.829 sg:total)
Martin Piller (0.673 sg:overseeded vs. 0.003 sg:total)
Jim Herman (1.306 sg:overseeded vs. 0.638 sg:total)

Quantity: The golfers that have the most strokes gained on Overseeded Bermuda Greens since 2014 are Charles Howell III, Phil Mickelson, Brendan Steele, Adam Hadwin, and Sean O’Hair.

This angle sort of combines the time-of-year angles as well since overseeded greens are only going to be live during late fall, winter, or early spring.

Par 72 Courses

We have three courses on the rotation this week but all of them are par 72s. That means each golfer will have 12 par 5s this week and 16 if they make the cut.

The Top 10 Par 72 Specialists:

Tom Lovelady (1.533 sg:par72 vs. 0.532 sg:total)
Cody Gribble (0.588 sg:par72 vs. 0.059 sg:total)
Martin Piller (0.51 sg:par72 vs. 0.003 sg:total)
Andrew Landry (1.128 sg:par72 vs. 0.641 sg:total)
Ryan Palmer (1.783 sg:par72 vs. 1.304 sg:total)
Brandon Hagy (1.145 sg:par72 vs. 0.696 sg:total)
Carlos Ortiz (0.805 sg:par72 vs. 0.402 sg:total)
Danny Willett (0.879 sg:par72 vs. 0.515 sg:total)
Seamus Power (1.162 sg:par72 vs. 0.801 sg:total)
Brendan Steele (1.784 sg:par72 vs. 1.445 sg:total)

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained on par 72 courses since 2014 are Justin Rose, Phil Mickelson, Brendan Steele, Charley Hoffman, and Charles Howell III.

Plenty of golfers on this list would be classified as mashers but you also have putting specialists like Martin Piller show up.

Oddly enough, Aaron Wise shows up near the bottom of this list. He meets the minimum threshold to qualify (30+ rounds) but I would suggest it’s still too early in his career to act confidently on his splits.

Short Courses

The layouts this week all play between 7,050 and 7,175 yards. When you consider they are par 72s, they easily fall on the short side of the spectrum.

Let’s see who likes to take advantage of shorter venues.

The Top 10 Short Course Specialists:

Anirban Lahiri (1.768 sg:short vs. 1.025 sg:total)
Richy Werenski (1.42 sg:short vs. 0.772 sg:total)
Andrew Landry (1.257 sg:short vs. 0.641 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.458 sg:short vs. 0.851 sg:total)
Lucas Glover (1.987 sg:short vs. 1.411 sg:total)
Brian Harman (1.832 sg:short vs. 1.257 sg:total)
Scott Langley (1.126 sg:short vs. 0.573 sg:total)
Si Woo Kim (1.433 sg:short vs. 0.905 sg:total)
Steve Marino (0.711 sg:short vs. 0.187 sg:total)
Phil Mickelson (2.583 sg:short vs. 2.08 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Short Courses since 2014 are Brian Harman, Pat Perez, Brendan Steele, Chez Reavie, and Kevin Kisner.

You notice a lot of “fall superstarts” on the list of short course specialists. A lot of these shorter venues get ticked off the schedule in the fall or winter before the meat of the schedule kicks in during major season. In fact if you flip this list upside then you’d probably get a good list of golfers to target in majors.

Wild Wild West

It’s oh-so important in real estate but it’s also important when it comes to handicapping golf events.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION.

For this angle I’ve lumped all the events in the West Region of the United States (including Hawaii) to see who likes getting their shopping done before the Florida Swing.

The Top 10 West Coast Specialists:

Brandon Harkins (1.993 sg:west vs. 1.026 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.742 sg:west vs. 0.851 sg:total)
Alex Prugh (1.033 sg:west vs. 0.335 sg:total)
Scott Stallings (1.426 sg:west vs. 0.74 sg:total)
Martin Laird (1.984 sg:west vs. 1.323 sg:total)
Brendan Steele (2.088 sg:west vs. 1.445 sg:total)
Max Homa (-0.32 sg:west vs. -0.937 sg:total)
Harris English (1.679 sg:west vs. 1.073 sg:total)
Jon Rahm (3.017 sg:west vs. 2.473 sg:total)
Richy Werenski (1.271 sg:west vs. 0.772 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained in the West since 2014 are Brendan Steele, Charles Howell III, Chez Reavie, Phil Mickelson, and Martin Laird.

A majority of these golfers have ties to California or Arizona so this part of the schedule is their favorite time of the year.

Easy Courses

The current rotation of courses has been used for three years here and here is how the scoring averages shake out…

Stadium Course: 71.26
Nicklaus Tourney: 69.71
La Quinta CC: 69.20

The Stadium Course plays the toughest but even that course has averaged 0.74 strokes under-par. These golfers need to put on their birdie shoes and not take them off until Sunday night.

The Top 10 Easy Courses Specialists:

Nate Lashley (1.63 sg:easy vs. 1.022 sg:total)
Martin Piller (0.607 sg:easy vs. 0.003 sg:total)
Sam Ryder (1.614 sg:easy vs. 1.051 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.386 sg:easy vs. 0.851 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (1.076 sg:easy vs. 0.625 sg:total)
Ryan Blaum (1.235 sg:easy vs. 0.797 sg:total)
Richy Werenski (1.203 sg:easy vs. 0.772 sg:total)
Cody Gribble (0.467 sg:easy vs. 0.059 sg:total)
Scott Piercy (1.532 sg:easy vs. 1.129 sg:total)
Roberto Castro (1.152 sg:easy vs. 0.75 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Easy Courses since 2014 are Charles Howell III, Scott Piercy, Hudson Swafford, Adam Hadwin, and Chez Reavie.

Lashley is an interesting name here because he grades out very well under easy conditions and he has just five starts remaining on his Medical Extension. He needs to make the most of each start he makes.

Baseline Performance

Looking for golfers that have proven to be positive in all five angles, we have 6 golfers still standing.

However, we don’t want to take a risk of spotty long-term skill or a golfer with no recent form.

Golfers that don’t have the form or long-term skill to trust:

Martin Piller
Grayson Murray
Bud Cauley
Roberto Castro
Nick Taylor

The course fit element is here for all of these guys, but we don’t need to force them in. Murray is struggling with injuries. Piller, Cauley and Castro don’t have any recent reps.

The Specialist

Charles Howell III

We have a back-to-back specialist this week as Charles Howell III finds himself in the top spot again.

charles-howell-800x480

CH3 does most of his heavy lifting early in the season when the courses are shorter and easier.

He will be making his 14th appearance at this event and he’s 11-for-13 here in the past. That includes six top 20s which is what I’m hoping we see again this week.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Charles Howell III
Jon Rahm
Sungjae Im
Chez Reavie
Phil Mickelson
Scott Piercy
Adam Hadwin
Brendan Steele
Pat Perez
Luke List
Lucas Glover
Hudson Swafford
Patton Kizzire
Russell Henley
Harris English
Bill Haas
Bud Cauley
Anirban Lahiri
Martin Laird
Chris Kirk

CH3 over Rahm?

That’s what we see based on Howell’s course fit and the fact he’s played twice already in January to pad his form numbers.

There are a few golfers on the list above with no recent form so make sure you account for that risk of rust when drafting some of those players.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made tiny adjustments for sample sizes, but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 6 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

SIMPLE RATING looks at SGTotal, FORM, and SPECIALIST RATING to create a simple rating that includes course fit but doesn’t overweight it.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
