Searching for a Specialist: Safeway Open

The Ryder Cup was a disaster (if you were rooting for Team USA), but fear not, the new season is upon us.

We head to Silverado Resort and Spa to get the season started. It’s in Napa so make sure you draft guys that handle their wine intake. Sorry, but I don’t have any stats on that one.

This week we look at performance on Poa Annua Greens, Par 72 courses, performance in California, performance in the Fall, and performance on Short Courses.

I’ve also included Web.com Tour results into the form column this week since there are so many new faces making the leap up from the minor leagues.

Here we go …

Poa Annua Greens

For most amateur golfers, you probably wouldn’t notice the difference in grass types, but these pros have everything dialed in.

Kisner had this to say about poa annua a few years back, “Guys that are from the West Coast complain by the grain [on bermuda], and I don’t even look at grain here. So I just putt like I’ve always putted. And I guess that’s why I’m not very good on the poa annua, and they laugh at me out there.”

Phil Mickelson added this commentary at Pebble Beach, “The greens being poa annua are what I grew up on, so it’s a grass I feel comfortable. Not just putting on, but chipping on, chipping into and hitting full shots into. It can be challenging for guys if they’re not used to it. It’s something that I’ve become very comfortable with over the years.”

The 10 Poa Specialists:

Carlos Ortiz (1.537 sg:poa vs. 0.331 sg:total)
Sangmoon Bae (1.245 sg:poa vs. 0.368 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.709 sg:poa vs. 0.864 sg:total)
Jhonattan Vegas (1.692 sg:poa vs. 0.978 sg:total)
J.B. Holmes (2.026 sg:poa vs. 1.508 sg:total)
Tyrone Van Aswegen (0.997 sg:poa vs. 0.497 sg:total)
Phil Mickelson (2.521 sg:poa vs. 2.073 sg:total)
Martin Laird (1.75 sg:poa vs. 1.302 sg:total)
Kevin Streelman (1.704 sg:poa vs. 1.262 sg:total)
Vaughn Taylor (1.396 sg:poa vs. 0.985 sg:total)

Quantity: The golfers that have the most strokes gained on poa annua since 2014 are Phil Mickelson, Brendan Steele, J.B. Holmes, Brandt Snedeker, and Kevin Streelman.

Mickelson talked about his comfort on poa annua in the quote above and it certainly shows in the data. He’s at his best when the TOUR heads to poa annua.

Par 72 Courses

Silverado’s North Course is a par 72 with the standard (4) amount of par 5s.

That gives golfers a bit of breathing room when it comes to battling back from bad holes. They know they can always pick up 2-to-5 shots per round on the par 5s.

The Top 10 Par 72 Specialists:

Martin Piller (0.692 sg:par72 vs. -0.022 sg:total)
Cody Gribble (0.704 sg:par72 vs. 0.116 sg:total)
Brandon Hagy (1.352 sg:par72 vs. 0.793 sg:total)
Andrew Landry (1.245 sg:par72 vs. 0.722 sg:total)
Richy Werenski (1.083 sg:par72 vs. 0.605 sg:total)
Danny Willett (0.909 sg:par72 vs. 0.488 sg:total)
Brendan Steele (1.878 sg:par72 vs. 1.484 sg:total)
Chesson Hadley (1.297 sg:par72 vs. 0.956 sg:total)
Jon Curran (0.61 sg:par72 vs. 0.29 sg:total)
Andres Gonzales (0.642 sg:par72 vs. 0.338 sg:total)

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained on par 72 courses since 2014 are Phil Mickelson, Brendan Steele, Emiliano Grillo, J.B. Holmes, and Lucas Glover.

As you see from the list above, it’s not always the biggest hitters that improve the most on par 72s. Sometimes even the shorter hitters like to have more par 5s because it gives him more scoring chances to utilize their putting prowess. Goes to show there are plenty of ways to get the ball in the hole.

California Courses

Performance in Cali is a fun but unique angle to look at.

When you think California you probably think great weather. The funny thing is the TOUR typically heads to California when the rest of the country is too cold to host. That means even in California it’s the cooler season.

PGA TOUR golf in California often features cool mornings and sometimes a bit or wind or rain.

The Top 10 California Specialists:

Carlos Ortiz (1.61 sg:cali vs. 0.331 sg:total)
Adam Hadwin (2.33 sg:cali vs. 1.431 sg:total)
Harris English (1.979 sg:cali vs. 1.089 sg:total)
Martin Piller (0.843 sg:cali vs. -0.022 sg:total)
Brendan Steele (2.326 sg:cali vs. 1.484 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.685 sg:cali vs. 0.864 sg:total)
Jonas Blixt (1.282 sg:cali vs. 0.468 sg:total)
J.B. Holmes (2.256 sg:cali vs. 1.508 sg:total)
Bud Cauley (1.937 sg:cali vs. 1.277 sg:total)
Martin Laird (1.908 sg:cali vs. 1.302 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained in California since 2014 are Phil Mickelson, Brendan Steele, Adam Hadwin, Kevin Streelman, and J.B. Holmes.

Hadwin talks about how Canadian fans are well represented in California. Some of that is specific to the Palm Springs area, but Hadwin still enjoys showing off, all across the state.

Fall Season

A switch is flipped for some golfers when we head into the fall portion of the schedule.

For some, it means a fresh start. For some, it’s finally their first event with a little rest in the lead-up.

For others, they like the weather or like the style of courses that are often seen during this stretch.

Let’s see who shines as the leaves start changing colors…

The Top 10 Fall Specialists:

Cody Gribble (1.26 sg:fall vs. 0.116 sg:total)
Anirban Lahiri (1.95 sg:fall vs. 1.031 sg:total)
Scott Piercy (1.673 sg:fall vs. 1.029 sg:total)
Fabian Gomez (1.126 sg:fall vs. 0.597 sg:total)
Brendan Steele (1.97 sg:fall vs. 1.484 sg:total)
John Senden (1.259 sg:fall vs. 0.781 sg:total)
J.J. Spaun (1.462 sg:fall vs. 1.003 sg:total)
Russell Henley (1.95 sg:fall vs. 1.522 sg:total)
Ryan Moore (2.122 sg:fall vs. 1.704 sg:total)
Whee Kim (0.926 sg:fall vs. 0.548 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained in the fall since 2014 are Chez Reavie, Luke List, Kevin Streelman, Russell Knox, and Anirban Lahiri.

We see a pretty clear pattern in the style of golfer that plays well in the fall. There are exceptions, but guys like Lahiri, Piercy, Spaun, and Moore are all shorter than average off the tee but can go lights out if you give them a wedge or short iron.

Short Courses

Silverado is under 7,200 yards which is pretty average for the PGA TOUR.

However, it’s a par 72 so it’s quite short when you adjust for par value.

The Top 10 Short Course Specialists:

Ted Potter, Jr. (1.769 sg:short vs. 0.757 sg:total)
Anirban Lahiri (1.98 sg:short vs. 1.031 sg:total)
Andrew Landry (1.589 sg:short vs. 0.722 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.621 sg:short vs. 0.864 sg:total)
Lucas Glover (1.945 sg:short vs. 1.327 sg:total)
Martin Piller (0.555 sg:short vs. -0.022 sg:total)
J.J. Spaun (1.577 sg:short vs. 1.003 sg:total)
Phil Mickelson (2.629 sg:short vs. 2.073 sg:total)
Brendan Steele (2.009 sg:short vs. 1.484 sg:total)
Richy Werenski (1.109 sg:short vs. 0.605 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on short courses since 2014 are Brandt Snedeker, Brendan Steele, Russell Knox, Kevin Streelman, and Chez Reavie.

A common theme here again is guys that excel with wedges and short irons. That should be the type of golfer we target this week.

Baseline Performance

Starting a new season, I will be a bit more lenient with these figures, but overall we have a few golfers that fit the course but can’t be trusted due to their long-term performance and/or form.

Those golfers are Andres Gonzales, Cameron Tringale, and Bill Haas.

You could consider these guys as GPP darts, but they shouldn’t even sniff cash-game lineups.

The Specialist

Carlos Ortiz
Brendan Steele
Kevin Streelman

The specialist this week is Carlos Ortiz!

carlos-ortiz-550x330

The Mexico native was a stud during his rookie year, but a sophomore slump saw him lose his card the next year. He’s back after a strong Web.com Tour showing and should be a good fit to start the year here at Silverado.

Despite his struggles in year two, Ortiz still boasts a 6-for-8 record in California. He has talked about how his home course (Guadalajara CC) has similar grasses as you see out here in Cali.

Ortiz also became a father a the end of May. Since then, he’s gone 12-for-12 on the Web.com Tour with eight top 30s. Talk about Nappy Factor!

Ortiz has a less-than-stellar baseline index, but his 2018 performance on Web combined with this course fit makes him a worthy option this week.

Steele needs no explanation here. He’s the back-to-back champ and he was the 54-hole leader the year before that.

Streelman was a bit of a surprise to see on this list, but he’s sneaky good in California. He’s posted six top 20s in Cali since the start of 2016. He struggles with putting on any surface so I guess he’d like these tricky poa annua greens that even a playing field a bit for him.

The Anti-Specialists

We have a few golfers that qualify as specialists this week, but who does the opposite, grading out negatively in all of the angles?

Shawn Stefani
Chad Campbell
Kelly Kraft

An easy fade on all three of these Texans for me.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Brandt Snedeker
Emiliano Grillo
Adam Hadwin
Phil Mickelson
Chez Reavie
Patrick Cantlay
Ryan Moore
Peter Uihlein
Lucas Glover
J.B. Holmes
Joaquin Niemann
J.J. Spaun
Luke List
Russell Knox
Chris Kirk
Aaron Baddeley
Bill Haas
Denny McCarthy
Beau Hossler
Jhonattan Vegas

Nothing too surprising here. We see plenty of ball-strikers on the list, which is perfect for this week’s course setup.

It’s funny to see Aaron Baddeley crack the top 20 even though he was a Monday Q so the pricing was already out before he secured his spot.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes, but be sure to check on the number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

SIMPLE RATING looks at SGTotal, FORM, and SPECIALIST RATING to create a simple rating that includes course fit, but doesn’t overweight it.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
