Searching for a Specialist: Sony Open

It’s week two of the 2019 schedule and the PGA TOUR gave us a nice warmup event last week with the limited-field Tourney of Champs.

For specialist purposes it was a good week as Gary Woodland was winning for most of the week and really did nothing wrong down the stretch; he just got outplayed by Xander Schauffele, who posted a career round on Sunday. Let’s build on Woodland’s success to see if we can find another strong specialist at this week’s venue, Waialae Country Club.

This week we look at Performance on Bermuda Greens, Par 70 Courses, Easy-to-Hit Greens, Coastal Courses, and Easy Courses in general.

Here we go…

Performance on Bermuda Greens

Diving through the interview archives here at Waialae it is clear that some golfers feel at home on the bermudagrass green surfaces.

“It kind of reminds me of growing up in South Georgia, playing on Bermuda grass.” – Harris English

“You’ve got to play to the front of the greens, but growing up on bermuda, I feel like I have a good understanding kind of what it does.” – Hudson Swafford

“I like that the greens are bermuda, just like I practice on at home.” – Russell Henley

Golfers that grew up in the Southeast are right at home here on Oahu. It’s worth noting all three of the quotes from above are from golfers that went to the University of Georgia. There would be even more of that I’m sure if I pulled all the transcripts from Brian Harman and Kevin Kisner, as well.

The 10 Bermuda Specialists:

Sam Burns (1.943 sg:bermuda vs. 0.654 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.693 sg:bermuda vs. 0.066 sg:total)
Colt Knost (1.123 sg:bermuda vs. 0.506 sg:total)
Si Woo Kim (1.422 sg:bermuda vs. 0.909 sg:total)
Rory Sabbatini (1.249 sg:bermuda vs. 0.807 sg:total)
Bryson DeChambeau (2.249 sg:bermuda vs. 1.83 sg:total)
Gary Woodland (2.231 sg:bermuda vs. 1.828 sg:total)
Ryan Blaum (1.206 sg:bermuda vs. 0.804 sg:total)
Brian Gay (1.401 sg:bermuda vs. 1 sg:total)
Andrew Landry (1.102 sg:bermuda vs. 0.703 sg:total)

Quantity: The golfers that have the most strokes gained on Bermuda Greens since 2014 are Justin Thomas, Marc Leishman, Kevin Kisner, Hideki Matsuyama, and Charles Howell III.

Is it a smaller sample with Sam Burns? Yes. But is it so extreme that it’s still worth weighing this week? Yes. Burns has three top 10s on TOUR, all three came on bermuda. He’s a Lousiana native and went to school at LSU so it makes sense he would like the grainy stuff. He’s proving to be boom-or-bust early in his career, but this could be a boom type of week.

Par 70 Courses

Not all par 70s are created equal, but when we do head to a par 70 we know there are more par 4s to handle.

That puts a premium on course management because there are two fewer “gimme” holes per round (the par 5s). You need to stay relatively steady for the entire round.

The Top 10 Par 70 Specialists:

Joel Dahmen (1.547 sg:par70 vs. 0.982 sg:total)
Tyler Duncan (0.955 sg:par70 vs. 0.409 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.99 sg:par70 vs. 0.463 sg:total)
Ryan Armour (1.515 sg:par70 vs. 0.989 sg:total)
Davis Love III (0.498 sg:par70 vs. -0.027 sg:total)
Sangmoon Bae (0.772 sg:par70 vs. 0.275 sg:total)
Scott Langley (0.971 sg:par70 vs. 0.541 sg:total)
Stewart Cink (1.748 sg:par70 vs. 1.358 sg:total)
Danny Lee (1.456 sg:par70 vs. 1.118 sg:total)
Chez Reavie (1.834 sg:par70 vs. 1.496 sg:total)

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained on par 70 courses since 2014 are Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Paul Casey, Kevin Na, and Zach Johnson.

I’d consider Spieth the King of course management so it’s no surprise to see him with the most TOTAL strokes gained on par 70s since the start of 2014.

Easy-to-Hit Greens

The field has averaged roughly two-thirds of greens hit here since 2011.

Don’t be fooled by the “tough-to-hit” fairways because part of that is due to the firmness of the fairways. With golfers taking less club off the tee, these golfers will see plenty of opportunities to attack these greens.

The Top 10 Easy GIR Specialists:

Roberto Diaz (0.46 sg:easy GIR vs. -0.22 sg:total)
Sam Ryder (1.746 sg:easy GIR vs. 1.077 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.432 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.808 sg:total)
Gary Woodland (2.265 sg:easy GIR vs. 1.828 sg:total)
Johnson Wagner (1.258 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.828 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.47 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.066 sg:total)
Y.E. Yang (0.104 sg:easy GIR vs. -0.278 sg:total)
Bryson DeChambeau (2.19 sg:easy GIR vs. 1.83 sg:total)
Brian Gay (1.296 sg:easy GIR vs. 1 sg:total)
Davis Love III (0.262 sg:easy GIR vs. -0.027 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Easy GIR Courses since 2014 are Justin Thomas, Gary Woodland, Charles Howell III, Jordan Spieth, and Marc Leishman.

This list is a mixed bag in terms of route to success on Easy GIR courses. In one regard you’d expect poor ball-strikers to excel because they will finally be able to hit a reasonable number of greens. We see that show up with some elite putters like Johnson Wagner and Brian Gay.

However, many of the elite ball-strikers find a way to shine in these conditions, as well. If the field is hitting 2/3 of the greens then the elite ball-strikers will be hitting an even higher clip and that allows them to play relatively stress-free golf with less pressure put on their short game.

Coastal Courses

This course is right on the Southeastern coast of Oahu. Most of the course is shielded a bit, but there are still coastal conditions in play when you are nestled so tightly against the coastline.

Part of that equation is slower greens and another part is dealing with the occasional gust of wind.

The Top 10 Coastal Specialists:

Patton Kizzire (1.716 sg:coastal vs. 0.808 sg:total)
Brice Garnett (1.442 sg:coastal vs. 0.666 sg:total)
Ted Potter, Jr. (1.474 sg:coastal vs. 0.708 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (1.205 sg:coastal vs. 0.463 sg:total)
Luke Donald (1.638 sg:coastal vs. 0.989 sg:total)
Russell Knox (1.992 sg:coastal vs. 1.378 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (1.549 sg:coastal vs. 0.95 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.538 sg:coastal vs. 0.938 sg:total)
Jordan Spieth (3.209 sg:coastal vs. 2.666 sg:total)
Sangmoon Bae (0.785 sg:coastal vs. 0.275 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Coastal Courses since 2014 are Jordan Spieth, Matt Kuchar, Kevin Kisner, Gary Woodland, and Brandt Snedeker.

There is plenty of overlap with performance in windy conditions on these lists but also performance on slower greens shows a strong correlation with performance on coastal courses. It’s all part of the puzzle that goes into defining a golfer’s course fit.

Easy Courses

Waialae has yielded a field average of -0.75 strokes under par or easier in 5 of the last 8 editions.

With calm winds in the forecast, I would expect that to become 6-of-9 by week’s end.

The Top 10 Easy Courses Specialists:

Keith Mitchell (1.676 sg:easy vs. 1.097 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.332 sg:easy vs. 0.808 sg:total)
Sam Ryder (1.596 sg:easy vs. 1.077 sg:total)
Ryan Blaum (1.26 sg:easy vs. 0.804 sg:total)
Scott Piercy (1.549 sg:easy vs. 1.12 sg:total)
Anirban Lahiri (1.414 sg:easy vs. 1.018 sg:total)
Y.E. Yang (0.085 sg:easy vs. -0.278 sg:total)
Max Homa (-0.631 sg:easy vs. -0.969 sg:total)
Davis Love III (0.31 sg:easy vs. -0.027 sg:total)
Gary Woodland (2.153 sg:easy vs. 1.828 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Easy Courses since 2014 are Charles Howell III, Gary Woodland, Justin Thomas, Scott Piercy, and Marc Leishman.

When you look at these lists they are littered with golfers with “go-low” potential… and then there is CH3.

When shootouts break out, it’s good to have that round of low- or mid-60s in your bag.

Baseline Performance

Looking for golfers that have proven to be positive in all five angles, we have 8 golfers still standing.

However, we don’t want to take a risk of spotty long-term skill or a golfer with no recent form.

Golfers that haven’t played in a stroke-play event since the start of December are going to get eliminated here:

Russell Knox
Ryan Blaum
Jerry Kelly
Shawn Stefani
Ben Martin
Fabian Gomez
Zach Johnson

The course fit element is here for all of these guys, but we have the luxury of being choosy. Three of these guys have even won here (Kelly, Gomez, Johnson). Ben Martin is trying to return from injury and shouldn’t be trusted until he shows some form.

Overall, anyone on this list deserves a look, but they aren’t golfers I’m trying to jam into all my lineups.

The Specialist

Charles Howell III

We had a long list of 8 potential specialists, but CH3 is the only one still standing after we factor in competitive rust.

charles-howell-800x480

He shook off the cobwebs last week on Maui with a 14th-place finish at the Sentry TOC.

Now he heads to Waialae where his course fit is backed up with nearly two decades worth of results. He is 17-for-17 here with nine top 10s. Four of those have doubled as podium finishes, but he’s still searching for his first win here on Oahu.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Gary Woodland
Marc Leishman
Charles Howell III
Jordan Spieth
Zach Johnson
Cameron Champ
Justin Thomas
Kevin Kisner
Russell Knox
Bryson DeChambeau
Jimmy Walker
Brandt Snedeker
Kevin Na
Matt Kuchar
Chez Reavie
Scott Piercy
Adam Scott
Jason Dufner
Keith Mitchell
Cameron Smith

Not too many surprises on this list.

Spieth, ZJ, Kisner, Knox, and Walker all managed their way into the Top 10 despite the lack of any form.

Last week I pointed out that golfers with any competitive action since December were at a big advantage and the same looks to be true this week at the Sony. Feel free to dock those without any form even further, if you want to really lean on that trend.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes, but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 6 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

SIMPLE RATING looks at SGTotal, FORM, and SPECIALIST RATING to create a simple rating that includes course fit but doesn’t overweight it.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
