Searching for a Specialist: The RSM Classic

The PGA TOUR travels to the East Coast this week for The RSM Classic hosted at Sea Island Golf Club.

There are two courses in use this week (on Thursday/Friday) so we will dive into some angles that apply to both tracks in order to find a specialist that should fit the course nicely.

Reviewing our search from last week, J.J. Spaun lived up to his incredible course fit to nearly pull off his first PGA TOUR title. The other three specialists didn’t exceed expectations.

This week we look at Performance on Overseeded Bermuda, Performance on Coastal Courses, Performance on Easy-to-Hit fairways, Performance against Weak Fields, and Performance on Less-than-Driver Courses.

Performance on Overseeded Bermuda

Sea Island Golf Club features bermuda from wall-to-wall but it’s getting to be that time of the year when bermuda wants to hibernate for the winter. So, in late September they overseed the course with winter grass.

The extent of the overseed can change by year but even with no overseed, November bermuda will be different then bermuda in the heart of the summer.

Let’s see who like to play on these overseeded conditions.

The 10 Overseed Specialists:

Sean O’Hair (1.698 sg:overseeded vs. 0.918 sg:total)
Josh Teater (1.048 sg:overseeded vs. 0.304 sg:total)
Martin Piller (0.667 sg:overseeded vs. -0.057 sg:total)
Vaughn Taylor (1.7 sg:overseeded vs. 0.996 sg:total)
Trey Mullinax (1.432 sg:overseeded vs. 0.733 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.793 sg:overseeded vs. 0.095 sg:total)
John Huh (1.505 sg:overseeded vs. 0.842 sg:total)
Jim Herman (1.304 sg:overseeded vs. 0.643 sg:total)
Graeme McDowell (1.749 sg:overseeded vs. 1.1 sg:total)
J.J. Spaun (1.646 sg:overseeded vs. 1.089 sg:total)

Quantity: The golfers that have the most strokes gained on Overseeded Bermuda since 2014 are Charles Howell III, Sean O’Hair, John Huh, Zach Johnson, and Luke List.

Andrew Landry doesn’t have the sample built up yet but his top three finishes on TOUR have come here, TPC San Antonio, and CareerBuilder. All three events have overseeding of some sort.

Coastal Courses

Located on the Georgia coast, these courses are exposed to the coastal elements.

The Seaside is more exposed to the wind than the Plantation Course, and golfers will have three rounds at the Seaside, as long as they make the cut.

The Top 10 Coastal Specialists:

J.J. Spaun (2.08 sg:coastal vs. 1.089 sg:total)
Brice Garnett (1.493 sg:coastal vs. 0.638 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (1.79 sg:coastal vs. 0.976 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.538 sg:coastal vs. 0.736 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (1.235 sg:coastal vs. 0.461 sg:total)
Eric Axley (0.363 sg:coastal vs. -0.3 sg:total)
Kevin Streelman (1.783 sg:coastal vs. 1.223 sg:total)
Sangmoon Bae (0.799 sg:coastal vs. 0.257 sg:total)
Freddie Jacobson (1.157 sg:coastal vs. 0.626 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.6 sg:coastal vs. 0.095 sg:total)

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained on coastal courses since 2014 are Kevin Kisner, Webb Simpson, Zach Johnson, Charles Howell III, and Jason Dufner.

Controlling your ball flight is critical when heading to a coastal course. You need to adjust to a lot of subtle wind changes throughout the round.

The most shocking number on this board is Graeme McDowell who established himself as a coastal king for many years. Perhaps he’s gotten soft in his years as an Orlando resident. No longer looking to battle with Mother Nature to exert his dominance.

Easy-to-Hit Fairways

If you give a mouse a cookie he’ll ask for a glass of milk.

If you give a golfer easy fairways, he’ll hit an extremely high amount of greens in regulation.

You might consider some golfers to be “elite on the driving range.” You can tell they are good just by watching their range session. These are the types of courses that fit them well. They have pretty swings but their course management or decision-making abilities often put them in a pickle. Not so much on a course like these, which allow them easy access to fairways.

The Top 10 Easy Fairway Specialists:

Keith Mitchell (1.772 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.105 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.696 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.095 sg:total)
Bronson Burgoon (1.529 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.941 sg:total)
Max Homa (-0.398 sg:easy fairways vs. -0.942 sg:total)
Russell Henley (2.027 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.504 sg:total)
Eric Axley (0.216 sg:easy fairways vs. -0.3 sg:total)
Josh Teater (0.802 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.304 sg:total)
Henrik Norlander (1.472 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.98 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.364 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.89 sg:total)
Chad Campbell (1.307 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.839 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Easy Fairway Courses since 2014 are Russell Henley, Zach Johnson, Charles Howell III, Kevin Kisner, and Webb Simpson.

So far we’ve seen J.J. Spaun, Eric Axley, and Josh Teater pop up in two angles while Nicholas Lindheim has appeared on all three. Some names to consider put on your radar for now.

Weak Field Events

It’s the last week before the holiday break but there is nothing incentivizing the big names to show up here at Sea Island GC.

Some golfers like these quiet events where they can contend without all the fanfare that comes along with contending in bigger events.

Sometimes it’s just a mental barrier that is holding them back.

The Top 10 Weak Field Specialists:

Andrew Landry (1.555 sg:weak vs. 0.701 sg:total)
Austin Cook (1.963 sg:weak vs. 1.497 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.177 sg:weak vs. 0.736 sg:total)
Richy Werenski (1.176 sg:weak vs. 0.735 sg:total)
J.J. Spaun (1.529 sg:weak vs. 1.089 sg:total)
Bud Cauley (1.703 sg:weak vs. 1.32 sg:total)
Whee Kim (0.958 sg:weak vs. 0.584 sg:total)
Michael Kim (0.822 sg:weak vs. 0.489 sg:total)
Ryan Blaum (1.078 sg:weak vs. 0.745 sg:total)
Harold Varner III (1.34 sg:weak vs. 1.01 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Weak Fields since 2014 are Charles Howell III, Harold Varner III, Chris Kirk, Kevin Streelman, and J.J. Spaun.

When majors roll around there is always the label of Big Game Hunter that gets thrown around.

These guys are the opposite of that. Until proven otherwise.

Less-than-Driver Courses

This week golfers will see three rounds at the Seaside Course. A par 70 that plays to just 7,005 yards.

The other round is at the Plantation Course. A par 72 with a scorecard reading just 6,907 yards.

This is a week where the driver will be used less frequently than most week-to-week TOUR stops.

The Top 10 LT Driver Specialists:

Wesley Bryan (1.301 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.385 sg:total)
Ted Potter, Jr. (1.208 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.731 sg:total)
Jason Dufner (1.726 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.368 sg:total)
Joel Dahmen (1.313 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.966 sg:total)
Jamie Lovemark (1.688 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.344 sg:total)
Dominic Bozzelli (0.726 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.387 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.412 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.095 sg:total)
Tyler Duncan (0.733 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.434 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.74 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.461 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (1.23 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.976 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Less-than-Driver Courses since 2014 are Charles Howell III, Webb Simpson, Kevin Kisner, Zach Johnson, and Chris Kirk.

The struggles of Wes Bryan and his driver are well chronicled by now. It’s no surprise that he plays better on weeks where he gets to use it less. His baseline rate of “low rounds” is just under 12 percent. That makes a huge leap up to 20% when looking at just less-than-driver layouts. He’s in a big slump but this would be a good slump-busting spot.

Baseline Performance

We’ve crunched the numbers and now see five golfers with a positive number in every angle.

However, four of them don’t stack up when looking at long-term performance and/or recent form.

Let’s leave those golfers to GPPs only. Here they are:

Nicholas Lindheim
Trey Mullinax
Kevin Streelman
Michael Kim

Lindheim was remarkably inside the top 10 in four of the five angles. Impressive but his long-term baseline starts him around 125th to begin the week.

The Specialists

J.J. Spaun

The specialist this week is J.J. Spaun!

Article Image

For the second week in a row, Spaun is the man to watch.

Similar to last week, it’s another weak field in coastal conditions and an easy scoring environment.

After a close call in Mexico, I would expect Spaun to keep that momentum rolling this week. He will also have fond memories to lean on with a runner-up finish on his resume here last year.

The Anti-Specialists

We have one specialist this week but who does the opposite, grading out negatively in all of the angles?

Carlos Ortiz
Hunter Mahan
Robert Streb

These are all easy fades for me as none of them ping my radar on a week-to-week basis.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

J.J. Spaun
Cameron Champ
Charles Howell III
Joaquin Niemann
Jim Furyk
Lucas Glover
Jason Dufner
Russell Henley
Austin Cook
Jamie Lovemark
Nick Watney
Bill Haas
Keith Mitchell
Webb Simpson
Joel Dahmen
Vaughn Taylor
Chesson Hadley
Bud Cauley
Sam Ryder
Nate Lashley

Our specialist also finds himself at the number one spot. Hey hey yeah.

Some interesting names just off the top 20 include Kevin Kisner and Zach Johnson. They are big names but there form is really slacking. This might be a good spot to snap back into shape.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 6 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

SIMPLE RATING looks at SGTotal, FORM, and SPECIALIST RATING to create a simple rating that includes course fit but doesn’t overweight it.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
