4 p.m. Update: The Philadelphie 76ers announced Wednesday afternoon that Joel Embiid will not play in Game 5. Embiid has been diagnosed with a minor miniscus tear that will not require surgery. The Sixers’ superstar is currently listed as day-to-day.

The Sixers were unable to complete their sweep of the Washington Wizards on Monday night. Still, they have a chance at the gentleman’s sweep in Game 5 — in front of a fanbase that isn’t exactly gentlemanly to their opponents. However, doing so won’t be easy, even with the Sixers hosting Russell Westbrook and Bradley Beal in Philadelphia. Joel Embiid status is in question after exiting the previous game with a sore knee.

Embiid’s absence certainly helped the Wizards take their first game of the series, as the big man left late in the first quarter after falling hard during a drive to the basket. Washington took advantage of the opportunity, outscoring the Sixers 48-40 in the paint. Late in the game, the Wizards forced Ben Simmons to the free-throw line. The strategy worked, as the point guard made only 5-of-11 attempts. When all was said and done, the Wizards won 122-114, making the playoff series 3-1

Before their win at Capital One Arena, which recently opened William Hill Sportsbook, the Wizards had only been competitive in one of the previous three games.

Heading into Game 5 Wednesday night, Philadelphia is -5, -250 on the moneyline, with an Over/Under of 230.5 points.

So far sportsbooks have taken plenty of two-way action, which means there hasn’t been any significant movement on the other side of the counter when it comes to Sixers-Wizards betting odds. Of course that could change if the Sixers rule Embiid active later today.

Sixers vs. Wizards Picks

Because of the off-chance that Embiid plays in Game 5, I like laying the points and betting the Sixers against the spread (-6). My guess is that Philadelphia plays it safe and leaves him on the sideline, but there’s not a ton of information available to NBA bettors, nor oddsmakers, right now. Embiid was given an MRI on Tuesday and the Sixers subsequently listed him as doubtful, saying they would reevaluate their star player ahead of Game 5. If he’s out, -6 at home is probably a pretty efficient line and a spread that the Sixers can cover sans Embiid. And if f he’s active, we get a few points of value by locking this ATS bet early before any news breaks. The Sixers were 8.5-point favorites AT Washington just two days ago, afterall! Also remember, before Game 4, the Sixers had overwhelmed the Wizards throughout the series. Philadelphia outscored Washington 377-316 through the first three games, averaging over 20 points more than the Wizards per contest.

Understandably, betting on the Sixers without Embiid may not be your cup of tea. However, thanks to our friends at FOX Bet, I found a bet that you can’t pass up, no matter how much you may like the Wizards, Beal, or Westbrook.

NBA Pick: Sixers -6
